There has been an exponential rise in the amount of superhero movies hitting theaters in recent years, and there does not seem to be an end in sight. As the trend continues, there will continue to be many more roles available for actors of interest. Most recently, studios have been going after the biggest names in Hollywood, such as Oscar winner Brie Larson as Captain Marvel or J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon. That is not to say that every role is going to go to the biggest names, with directors and studios also looking to bring people that are passionate about the movie into the fold.
James Gunn has brought in multiple friends, Michael Rooker and his own brother, and also some of his personal favorites – Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone – into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. When the third movie comes out, you can add musical legend Steven Tyler to the list of people hoping for a role.
Former Aerosmith lead man Steven Tyler has been in plenty of onscreen productions, although mainly as himself. However, while out promoting his role in Happy Birthday, an upcoming independent film, he expressed his hopes to make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. While speaking to People Magazine, he was asked about appearing in bigger movies moving forward and he singled out the third installment as his goal:
“I hope [audiences] enjoy [Happy Birthday]. I know I did! It made me want to do more movies for sure, I would do anything to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 – are you listening James Gunn?”
Even though Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has not been formally announced, Marvel Studios has every intention of making it, barring an unexpected flop. No matter when the third movie comes out, it would be easy to see Gunn finding a cameo spot for Tyler. The Guardians 1 and 2 director would be the man to ask to get a potential role, but Gunn has stated multiple times that he is not sure if he will return for another movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
If Tyler does manage to find his way into the third installment, it would not be the first appearance from a musician. Gunn was able to cast Jimmy Urine, the frontman for Mindless Self Indulgence, in Vol. 2, so it would not be too surprising for Tyler’s campaign to work. Music is embedded in the DNA of the Guardians movies, so Tyler appearing would be a nice touch for the film, especially with Quill likely hearing of Aerosmith prior to him being taken by Yondu as a child. Tyler could make for a perfect alien in one of the many new worlds that the Guardians will visit, so it will be interesting to see how well his campaigning for this role works.
