James Gunn has revealed that the classic Mary Poppins line wasn’t part of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. script. The first film, of course, told the story about a group of outlaws including Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voice of Vin Diesel) formed a unique bond to essentially become a family, albeit a very dysfunctional one. Vol. 2 continued the family theme, with Peter encountering his long-lost father, Ego (Kurt Russell), who may not be all that he seems. The film also expands the role of Yondu (Michael Rooker), the outlaw Ravenger who raised Peter, and pairs the two in one of the most memorable scenes near the conclusion of the film.

In the scene, Yondu takes flight with Peter to save him from certain peril, Peter remarks, “You look like Mary Poppins,” to which Yondu responds, “Is he cool?” Peter countered by saying, “Hell yeah, he’s cool,” to which Yondu replied, “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!” Now Gunn’s opened up about how it came to be.

In an interview with THR about Vol. 2‘s upcoming home video release and more, Gunn explains how the film’s Mary Poppins exchange came to be. He says:

“When I was visualizing the scene, it didn’t look quite as heroic as I intended it to be. So then I put the Poppins line in Peter Quill’s mouth. And Yondu, of course, not knowing the name Mary or Poppins, might think he’s sort of a Lee Marvin type, and he owns it.”

Without question, Gunn has been an amazing addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his Mary Poppins gag is just another example of why his talents are so unique. He smartly tapped into Disney’s library or inspiration (avoiding a lot of studio rights issues in the process), and as a result inspired fans to have their own fun with the scene.

The Mary Poppins line was instantly embraced by fans, who wasted no time in creating things like a custom Mary Poppins Yondu figure and fan art of Yondu as the iconic Disney movie character in conjunction with the first big release of images from the upcoming Emily Blunt film Mary Poppins Returns. Rooker has even gotten into the act, wearing a badge with the name “Mary Poppins” at last month’s San Diego Comic Con.

For fans who couldn’t get enough of the Marry Poppins scene, there’s a bonus take of the scene of sorts in the upcoming Vol. 2 video release. In Gunn’s preview of the video’s gag reel, there’s a brief take of Rooker’s “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all” line but with a little improvising by the actor, who instead says, “I’m Mary Poppins f—ers!”
