The internet age has made it virtually impossible for upcoming movies to avoid leaks and spoilers. Not only can information (and disinformation) find its way online without resistance, it can spread uncontrollably – and often distort the truth. The much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is no safer than any other popular franchise, as fans eagerly wait for a trailer and further information about the blockbuster sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 seemed to have fallen victim to one such internet leak earlier this week. A post on 4chan claimed to reveal many details about the sequel’s plot and characters. Some parts of the post suggest that the leaked information is accurate, yet much of it has yet to be confirmed. Writer/director James Gunn is aware of how easily info can leak out on the internet, and decided to tell the truth – some of it, anyway.
Speaking in a live video chat on his Facebook page, Gunn revealed what is actually known about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, directly (or indirectly) confirming some parts of the 4chan leak and denying others.
One particular piece of info from the 4chan leak that he confirmed is that Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) will appear in the movie as Baby Groot and is “not an adult.” While 4chan described Mantis (Pom Klementieff), the half-sister of Star-Lord/Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), as a new member of the team, Gunn did not confirm the character’s involvement in the plot but did re-confirm that Mantis is in the movie.
Gunn ostensibly debunked one major detail from the 4chan leak: that Sylvester Stallone would be playing a member of the alien race known as “The Ancients.” Gunn said in the video that Stallone is playing “someone,” but “we don’t know who.” The leak says that Yondu (Michael Rooker), who was shown sporting a new look in recent photos, and Nebula (Karen Gillan) join the good guys in the sequel, but Gunn would only confirm that the two “have more important roles in the film.”
New arrival Ego (Kurt Russell) is described as one of the primary antagonists in the film in the 4chan leak, but Gunn only confirmed that Ego is an ancient being and the father of Peter Quill – which Gunn previously had to explain was not a spoiler. Independent of the 4chan post, Gunn confirmed that there would be another post-credits scene and that Guardians 2 takes place two months after the ending of the first film. He also confirmed the name of the monster seen in recent concept art as an “Abelisk.”
There are details in the 4chan leak that Gunn did not mention in his video, like that Thanos and the Infinity Stones will not appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel but are “referenced,” and that the ending of Guardians 2 leads right into 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. It’s certainly possible that this information is true, but the fact that Gunn offered a tacit denial of many other details from the leak suggests this anonymous, un-sourced internet “leak” is (shockingly) not altogether reliable.
