Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters next month, shortly after the film’s soundtrack (aka. Awesome Mix Vol. 2) arrives. Marvel Studios is currently promoting the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel across as many platforms of press as the studio can. The focus of the film’s marketing campaign thus far has (naturally) been the returning main heroes from the first Guardians; including, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and Baby Groot, as well as Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper).
Meanwhile, Marvel knows that the film itself is only part of what fans want and just one avenue for them to make money. In conjunction with Guardians 2 hitting theaters, expect to see even more merchandise featuring the main characters arriving soon. Already, a life-size replica of Star-Lord’s helmet for the truly diehard Peter Quill fan has been released. There’s also the soundtrack to the sequel. After all, Awesome Mix Vol. 1 was more than just a collection of songs, but a big part of the first Guardians itself.
We’ve heard that music plays an even bigger role in Guardians 2, which is saying something as Quill’s singing from the first Guardians arguably helped save an entire planet. Writer and director James Gunn has now confirmed that Awesome Mix Vol. 2 will be available starting April 28th, a full week ahead of Guardians 2‘s North American release, as you can see below:
While the soundtrack won’t give away specific plot details, it should give us a feel for the vibe of the Guardians sequel. We’ve known for some time that not all of the songs used in the Guardians 2 marketing show up in the actual film, but at least some of them will be on the soundtrack. Gunn recently stated on Twitter that he made an effort to spread out the songs on the soundtrack across the film and marketing, helping to ensure things stay fresh by the time fans see Guardians 2 for themselves.
After the release of the first Guardians, its soundtrack became a smash hit on Amazon and music charts, helping to bring new life to a number of classic songs. Expect a similar things to happen with the Vol. 2 soundtrack, as fans will be eager to relive the movie anyway they can. Just don’t let Baby Groot near your Awesome Mix, as he’s been known to be rather unkind to cassette tapes in the past.
