Although we’re a little less than a year away from the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about who might be appearing in the second installment of Marvel’s surprise 2014 blockbuster hit. With so many different Marvel characters now interacting on the big screen, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 director James Gunn is constantly asked whether or not fans might see some Marvel superheroes appear alongside Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and his team of miscreants.
It’s always seemed somewhat implausible for some of the Avengers or other Marvel superheroes to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but Thor has always seemed like the most plausible of all the options. Gunn certainly knows that, as he’s been asked about the God of Thunder having a cameo in the film a copious amount of times, but those questions don’t seem to bother him too much as he had some fun with fans over a possible Thor appearance on social media today.
Gunn originally posted a picture on his Facebook account of him holding Thor’s hammer with a very serious look on his face. Rather than keep fans speculating as to whether or not this was Gunn just having some fun messing with the internet, the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 director later took to his Twitter account to make it clear that nobody should read into the harmless picture:
@ComicBook My statements I’ve made a hundred times are still accurate.— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) June 3, 2016
Gunn has been very clear that no other superheroes from the Marvel universe would be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. However, with Thanos appearing in the original Guardians of the Galaxy film, questions about Thor, specifically, were always going to come up about a possible crossover. Avengers: Infinity War writers teasing the appearance of some Guardians in the 2018 blockbuster haven’t helped quiet things down, either.
Still, Gunn hasn’t wavered from his earlier answers that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 would not feature any other previously established Marvel superheroes. Even though fans will be seeing a lot of new characters in the film, Thor won’t be one of them. However, Gunn knew what he was doing when he elected to share the photo, so it’s fair to assume he likes the mystery and intrigue surrounding the secretive Marvel Studios productions.
