James Gunn has confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be Disney's first 4K UltraHD release. Since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, Gunn has been put in charge of ushering in the cosmic corner of the MCU. With this responsibility came the freedom for Gunn to make the look of the cosmos drastically different from what is seen on Earth. Bright, vibrant colors were infused into the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise immediately, and the influence can be seen with how Taika Waititi is following that blueprint on Thor: Ragnarok.

Because of the cosmic look, Gunn has been a vocal advocate for seeing his films in IMAX 3D where all of the visual elements he and his team spent so much time on will look the best. This is why it was no surprise to hear him state his desire to have Vol. 2 get a 4K home release, and that is officially happening.

Gunn confirmed this to be the case in a recent Facebook post. Not only does this make Gunn's dream a reality, but is actually quite a big deal in terms of the MCU and Disney. As noted by Gunn below, this will be the very first Disney release to get the 4K treatment - and expect more announcements soon.

Even though physical media like this has been on a decline, for those who collect movies or just simply want to own Vol. 2, they will now have the option of 4K. With this being the best quality possible for purchase, these versions of the home release are typically only a few dollars more. Watching any film in the best way is always ideal, so spending some extra money to make that possible in one's home instead of a theater should be worth it in the long run.

Outside of the enhanced visual nature of this release, Gunn also teases some very other exciting announcements for all versions of the home release. Deleted scenes, featurettes, and a commentary track from Gunn are all likely inclusions, but what other special features will be featured are unknown. Maybe this is where Tom Holland's tease of the Marvel One-Shots returning could come into play, or it could feature a new Guardians focused Avengers: Infinity War tease. Thankfully it sounds like we should know more soon, especially if the reported release date is true. In the meantime, we'll have to wait for the official details.
