Development on the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has officially been put on hold while everything behind the scenes of Avengers: Infinity War is ironed out. Featuring an original story that will be written and directed by returning filmmaker James Gunn, the next installment in the highly comedic Marvel Studios production is set to follow the events depicted in the next two Avengers films.

In the meantime, fans of the first two films - including this past month's highly lucrative box office success story that is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - have plenty to look forward to from the third installment. With many viewers already beginning to wonder just how large of a role the original Marvel Comics character Adam Warlock will have to play in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the latest word from James Gunn's brother - and supporting actor - Sean Gunn suggests that it might be a while before anything definite is set in stone.

Per an interview conducted by Fan Fest, Sean Gunn set aside some time to address the expected release schedule for future MCU features - specially in regards to Avengers: Infinity War and its immediate sequel, which will precede the theatrical release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Speaking to the waiting period that he and his brother will have to undertake going forward, Sean Gunn stated:

"I know that James is being a little bit more patient this time around. Partially because some of what happens with the Guardians is dependent on what happens with them in Infinity War. And even though my brother’s a producer on Infinity War, those movies aren’t finished yet so until we kind of see where everything lands there that’s going to have some bearing on what happens with the Guardians. So it’s a little bit of a wait and see but I’m sure there are a lot of ideas already in the works."

To put everything in context, Avengers: Infinity War is currently filming - and will be followed by the theatrical releases of Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel in 2018 and 2019, respectively - before its immediate sequel and the currently in development sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming meet their own summer 2019 target windows. Considering all of that, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 definitely feels far from becoming a reality at the present moment.

However, in due time things are sure to become more solidified behind the scenes of Avengers: Infinity War, and James Gunn will undoubtedly be allowed a clearer conception of where the MCU is headed post-Phase 3. In the meantime, here's to hoping for the very best as everything continues to develop behind the scenes.
