Aside from the childhood nostalgia it induces, or the escape it provides into a world filled with extra-human abilities and creations, one of the best things about Star Wars is the creative inspiration it instils in people. Right at this very moment, a quick Google search would reveal millions of different fan inventions or artistic interpretations that exist solely as a result of Star Wars and its generation-spanning influence.
It’s arguable that anyone who has grown up with Star Wars has, for whatever reason, clung to even a tiny bit of the wonder and imagination found in the films. For some, as they’ve aged, those qualities have expanded and directly influenced their career paths. Others are still being inspired, while others still simply get taken back to elaborately designed figurine battles on the playground every time John Williams’ iconic score booms.
The point is, Star Wars has always had and likely will always have a very great and uniquely particular influence on its fans. The latest example of this is a brilliantly designed short film, recently posted to YouTube by a user who goes by the name of Boris the Blade.
The video’s detail of a lightsaber battle between Grand Theft Auto V characters Trevor Philips and Michael De Santa is remarkable. Both men meet at the familiar location of Sandy Shores Airfield, muttering sound bites that are recognizable to anyone who’s played through the game. But that’s where the familiarity of GTA V stops and morphs into a bizarrely effective Star Wars lightsaber clash.
The fluidity with which these video game characters slash and twirl their lightsabers is truly first rate and designer Boris the Blade worked on the minute long short for a month and half, using real actors and green screen technology. It’s a superb calling card film that is sure to attract no small amount of attention and interest.
A short film such as this undoubtedly comes from a creative mind, but it still owes its inspiration to the likes of Grand Theft Auto V and, to an even greater degree, Star Wars. Call it nostalgia, call it obsession – whatever you want to call it, it’s a reality that keeps so many influenced and inspired to create. It’s a reality that shows no signs of disappearing either, just as a new generation is soon to be exposed to the next chapter of the legacy with the much-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Keep on creating, everyone, and may the Force be with you.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16th, 2016, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26th, 2017, and the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25th, 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to reach theaters in 2019, followed by the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
Grand Theft Auto V is currently available for Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
