Grey's Anatomy is arguably one of the greatest shows of all time. With fast-paced storylines and dynamic characters, Shonda Rhimes did not fail in getting the viewers hooked. However, if there is one thing the fans have learned from watching the show, it is that the surgeons don't get to have much of a social life. Since the characters are constantly dealing with high-stress medical emergencies, they hardly have any time for romance.

Most fans consider it to be a miracle if the characters actually make it to a date, and an even bigger surprise when it goes well. Being obsessed with their work, they often find it impossible to switch gears. As a result, it makes most of their dating life a big fail. Remember these awful instances?

Meredith & Derek

Meredith and Derek in Grey's Anatomy

It's safe to say that Meredith and Derek are Grey's greatest love story. However, the way these two got together was certainly not exactly the most romantic situation imaginable. The first "date" for these two started at Joe's, the famous bar across the street from the hospital that all of the characters go to.

Meredith had just moved to Seattle for her internship at Seattle Grace, and Derek was an attending there. However, they weren't even aware of that of the time. In fact, Meredith didn't even remember Derek's name in the morning, never mind what he did for a living. That's a pretty crazy first date. However, it is one of the only times the couple is actually out of the hospital together.

Izzie & Denny

Izzie cries while hugging Denny's body in Grey's Anatomy

Izzie and Denny are one of the most beloved couples in the entire season. Tragic, beautiful, and passionate, they were the epitome of a forbidden romance. After all, Izzie was one of the surgeons that had been working on his case and she even stole a heart for him.

However, their first date, while sweet, wasn't ideal. The entirety of their relationship existed within the hospital walls due to Denny's heart condition. That puts a damper on things to say the least. So their first "date" was a game of scrabble in Denny's hospital room. Being unable to go out and dress up just adds to the sadness of their short-lived soulmate relationship.

Callie & Arizona

Callie and Arizona casually dated for a while before they were able to have a proper date. Unfortunately, it wasn't exactly worth the wait. While these two had been one of the stronger couples on the show, their relationship was almost over before it even began as their date was a low point.

As fans remember, Callie ended up being disowned by her family once she revealed that she was bisexual. It also meant that they were cutting her off from the family's money, which meant she had begun budgeting everything. The financial issues she was having ended up affecting her relationship a little after Callie was seen avoiding Arizona.

It was soon revealed that Callie was frustrated at the fact that she nearly couldn't afford to pay for dinner because the restaurant Arizona had taken her too was too fancy and expensive. As one can tell, Arizona felt terrible...

Lexie & Mark

Another fan-favorite couple is Mark and Lexie. Almost as tragic as Izzie and Denny, Lexie and Mark's romance was short-lived. However, their love is so passionate and real that it has a huge impact on fans.

It shouldn't have come as a great surprise that they never got to have a proper first date. From season 5, Lexie and Mark began to notice the spark between them. While Mark managed to avoid temptation for a while, he soon gave in after Lexie came to his hotel room. The two then hooked-up for weeks but it wasn't long until a spanner was thrown into the mix when Lexie 'broke' Mark during a rendezvous. While it begins one of the best romances in the series, it's objectively an awful first date.

Cristina & Owen

Owen and Cristina embrace and look into each other's eyes in Grey's Anatomy.

After her break-up with Burke, Cristina became even more closed off. However, Owen was one of the people who was determined to open her up. He asks her on their first date in front of some of their colleagues, which fans thought was really sweet.

However, this quickly turns into one of the worst first dates as Owen comes late and under the influence. He comes into her home, stumbling and rambling about how nervous he was. Up to this point, Cristina is not happy at being forced to wait hours for him. However, she does forgive him when she realizes he was suffering with PTSD. Luckily, they do manage to get another chance.

 Alex & Rebecca/Ava

Alex comforts Ava at the hospital

Like Izzie and Denny, Alex and Rebecca/Ava's relationship existed entirely in the hospital. As everyone knows, this is usually a bad idea to begin with. Getting involved with a patient is ethically wrong and highly frowned upon in the medical community.

Although fans could see a genuine connection between them, this dynamic was unhealthy to say the least. Not long after they got together, Alex started to put his career on the line by smuggling her into surgeries. After Ava became ill, Alex put his health and Ava's at risk by not letting her get the proper treatment she needed. They never really got to have their first "date." If anything, their relationship only blossomed within the four walls of the hospital.

Cristina & Burke

When Cristina met Burke, he was her boss. While the couple decided to hook-up occasionally, they did agree to keep things professional between them. It did work for some time, however, it wasn't without a few glitches.

Although their chemistry was undeniable, Burke was very timid about beginning a relationship with one of his interns and what it could do to his reputation. Cristina also had her doubts as she wasn't really sure how to open herself up.

So it's not surprising that their first date was anything but normal, or even anything like a date. The moment that really began their relationship was Burke getting Cristina a coffee in the morning. It sounds crazy, but that was actually one of the most romantic and exciting moments in the series because it was so huge for them. Still, this is a terrible first date.

April & Jackson

If you haven't noticed, many of these charters prefer hooking up to a proper first date. April and Jackson are no exception. They are a fan favorite couple, and it all began with several steamy rendezvous.

While preparing for their boards, Jackson and April spent some time together and eventually hooked up. This was a huge deal because April had admitted that she was a virgin and saving herself for marriage. While she briefly panicked in the aftermath, she dismissed her doubts, and the two hooked up again in the bathroom. The only problem was the overwhelming guilt she felt that she always projected onto Jackson. Evidently, this made for a sticky beginning to their romance.

Addison & Mark

Another short-lived fling was Addison and Mark. Addison was married to Derek and Mark was his best friend. One night, Addison and Mark got together. However, their affair was soon uncovered by Derek after he caught them in their marital bed.

This crazy first experience between Addison and Mark is one of the worst first dates in history. Addison always firmly stood by the stance that she regretted their three-month fling, and wished she stayed true to her marriage with Derek.

Meredith & George

George confesses to Meredith that he loves her

For Meredith and George, the first "date" they would agree was the worst would be their one-night-stand. As many fans remember, George had been one of Meredith's best friends. He started with her as an intern and has always been in love with her. However, this love was unrequited as Meredith was in love with Derek.

George is the nice guy, the good choice, but that is way too simple for Meredith. However, one night when she is super upset, she shares a romantic night with George. Well, not really romantic. She ends up crying in the middle of sex, which sent George into a spiral. 100% the worst first "date" of the series.
