Gregg Giraldo dead Comedian Greg Giraldo Dead At 44

Today, the world of comedy has lost one of its best performers, Greg Giraldo has passed away. Giraldo is best known for his hilarious performances on various Comedy Central Roasts, appearances on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, and as a judge on the most recent season of Last Comic Standing.

Originally employed as a lawyer for Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (after graduating Columbia University and Harvard Law), Giraldo quickly found comedy to be his true calling, leaving his job after less than a year to pursue comedy full time. His quick wit, distinct cadence, and unique perspective led to a quick rise in the comedy world – becoming one of the industry’s best.

Last weekend, rumors began to spread across the internet, and through comedy’s close knit circle, that something had happened to Giraldo. The comedian was a no-show for Saturday night’s headline performance at The Stress Factory in New Brunswick, NJ.

After a number of incorrect reports, it was eventually revealed that Giraldo had accidentally overdosed on prescription medication and was later found by a friend. Giraldo was rushed to a nearby hospital in New Brunswick, where he was placed in the ICU, and was in critical condition.

Today, four days after the incident, Giraldo passed away with his family by his side.

Close friends Jim Norton, Sarah Silverman, and Louis C.K. have already taken to Twitter to remember the late, great comedian:

  • @ JimNorton – Greg Giraldo passed away today. This is the last photo of us together, taken June 28 at Noam’s wedding. RIP buddy.
  • @ SarahKSilverman – RIP Greg Giraldo. Belly-laugh hilarious, prolific, good & kind. A thousand oys can’t express.
  • @ louisck – Greg giraldo was a good guy. The kind of you’re always glad to see. Also a funny comic and person. He died today. Goodbye friend.

Greg Giraldo was 44 at the time of his passing.

  1. awh man, this is very sad news…RIP Greg. You were truly one of the greats…

  2. Im sad now. Greg was one of my favorite comedians.

  3. This is TRULY devastating to me

I have followed him for probably 10 years, seen him live a couple of times, bought his CD, saw all the shows he hosted and been on…

It just started raining in LA 2 minutes ago…how appropriate

Btw, Bruce Lee, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Keith Moon, Heath Ledger and now Greg Giraldo, have all OD’d on prescription drugs…makes you think about how stupid the “war on drugs” really is

  4. Everyones dying! Whats going on?!!! :(

  5. I’m really sad over this. He was a fantastic comedian

  6. Shocking news and yes not only is it raining here in the Valley, (LA) there’s also a complete rainbow over Burbank.

I just recently became aware of Greg from his stand out performances on Lewis Blacks Root of all Evil, comedy central show.

What a huge loss to the comic world,,,

  7. He roasted many famous people and brought smiles to all who watched. Giraldo you will be severely missed dude :'(.

  8. Those who pray to die live like forever,
And those who want to live are dropping like stones

What kind of f’d up rule is this???

Love you Greg. Thank you for making me laugh so hard.
I’ll never forget your “Cave Man Diet” bit…
See you when I get there

  9. Never heard of him. But will check him out now. RIP

  10. Wow Ken i got CHILLS reading your comment, probly the saddest comment ive read on screenrant well said man.

  11. I feel like a little piece of comedy in me died by reading this.

  12. I’ve always loved his comedy he was hilarious and the world will miss him. I’ll have a hard time watching another roast knowing he will no longer be apart of it.

  13. As someone else said:

“The funniest Harvard Law School graduate ever”

Only 44, he had so much more to say

  14. I was just telling a buddy of mine that this guy was hilarious and I was just getting into his comedy and enjoying it. I feel sad about this.

  15. Boy – gone too soon. Incredibly talented. I quickly tire of the specter of accidental prescription drug overdose. Be particularly careful out there, folks.

  16. Ah nuts, he was THE funniest judge on the Last Comic Standing panel. RIP.

  17. Wow I kinda feel blessed that i got to watch him way back on Colin Quins show Tough Crowd, Nick Depalo and Greg Giraldo really stood out on that show. I really enjoyed watchin Greg on every other show he did after that as well. This kinda sucks man, didnt think it was real till i saw his recent special with a “In memory of” in between the special!! damn…

Tough Crowd was my favorite show back in the day. Nothing more entertaining then watching a bunch of really funny comedians just talk, as weird as that sounds. These are the guys I’d rather listen to then anyone else (other than experts).

Too bad Comedy Central absolutely despised Quinn being a republican and canceled the show and replaced it with Drawn Together (the cartoon show) and pushed Daily Show (due to the show’s liberal agenda). I was so pissed because my favorite comedians, like Greg Giraldo, would not be getting the exposure that they deserve.

  18. When comedy dies, it’s dramatic. cruel irony.
GOD walks in to a bar.
The bartender say’s ” hey! what are you doing here tonight?”
GOD replied ” I came to see comedians perform on stage”.
    The bartender say’s ” Why’s that?”
GOD replied ” because the laughs are better down here then the ones up there and because Satan always takes my best act”.
    R.I.P Greg!

  19. It hurts to read of such a talent gone so soon. I loved his sense of humor. My heart goes out to his family. May he rest in peace.
