One of the earliest rumors about The Green Lantern was that the film included a cameo by a certain Man of Steel. This rumor first surfaced when our friends over at IESB got an early look at the Green Lantern script and picked up on a scene where Clark Kent is approached as a possible candidate to wear GL’s emerald power ring.

This naturally set off a rumor-bomb of speculation about who would play Clark Kent for the Green Lantern cameo (Tom Welling? Brandon Routh) – but all that talk is now moot, as MTV Splash Page has exclusively confirmed that there will NOT be a Superman cameo in the film.

MTV confirmed the news while talking with Green Lantern director Martin Campbell, who had this to say:

“No, that won’t happen…None of the other DC characters will appear in the film.”

So down goes any Superman, Batman, Flash, or any other DC hero rumor you heard about regarding Green Lantern. While many of us comic book movie fans have enjoyed the sort of crossover cameos Marvel Studios has packed into their films as a lead-in to their Avengers movie, it seems DC/WB is letting their directors go the Chris Nolan route and establish independent universes for their individual heroes before they do any swapping and sharing.

I for one, don’t really care about this particular issue: I like what Marvel has done – it’s a nice little thrill for us fans – but when directors like Nolan are making great films like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight without having to worry about fitting those films into an entire DC Universe continuity, trust me, I’m good with that as well.

Regarding The Green Lantern: it’s already a tough enough job to take a character who wears a big green ring that can manifest whatever he imagines – aliens galore, little blue guys in robes who control the universe, etc. – and make all that believable and relatable onscreen.  Translating all those way-out-there concepts should be the only focus of this movie – damn the cameos and all those geektastic extras.

Besides, it’s not like DC/WB has a Justice League movie in the pipeline to promote, so why make a hard job even harder for Martin Capbell and Co.?

Are you crushed that you won’t see Superman in Green Lantern?

The Green Lantern is rolling into production and should be in theaters on June 17, 2011.

  1. @Kofi

“damn the cameos and all those geektastic extras.”

Come on man! Never a good attitude to have :-) Actually, I do agree. I want a good movie first and foremost. Anything else is icing… but I like icing. Marvel has successfully been able to do both.

Like you said, maybe once they have a Justice League film to work towards, they can begin to create some crossover potential.

  2. You don't need an actor with a face to play Superman. You could have a cameo where Superman saves someone and quickly remarks to GL or something like that and never actually show his face if you really wanted to.

  3. No big deal. A Superman cameo would have been cool, but is totally unnecessary. As long as the GL character is done properly, this movie is going to rock.

  4. Has it been confirmed that the film will be called 'The Green Lantern'? I know it's nitpicking but I've been seeing it for months and it sounds so goofy. It's 'Green Lantern' – the 'the' takes away the oomph, if you ask me, much like 'The Batman'.

  5. i just hope this movies works….Superman or no superman

  6. Its not really a big deal when you consider they dont currently have actor playing Superman in his own set of films.

  7. I don't care either way if there's another DC hero in GL or not. But I thought WB's big plan was to start doing crossover stuff with their superhero efforts. I mean, are we not even going to have a small shot of someone reading a Daily Planet newspaper or watching a report on the latest Bruce Wayne antic?

  8. This is annoying, I was looking forward to seeing Superman on the big screen again, it could have been a small throwaway scene with Tom Welling as Clark Kent.

Why are the studio so against Superman? I just dont understand it. If it wasnt for Superman in the 30s, who knows what comics would be like? If it wasnt for the Superman movie in the 70s, there wouldnt be the volume of them that there is today.

What exactly has Superman done to suddenly deserve such shabby treatment? There is a full cast of people on Smallville who have been doing a great job with these characters for nearly ten years, why not just use them?

  9. I'll hold out hope on Justice League till they make decent Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Green Arrow flicks. And, wishful thinking, use Atlantis (or whatever Aquaman's kingdom is called) as the antagonist for the Justice League flick. You get armies, Sea Monsters, and an easy excuse to introduce Aquaman himself. Now to squeeze in Atom…

  10. That's it. I'm turning down my cameo in this movie too.

  11. DrSam

you always defend Superman to the ends of the earth. i love it.

  12. You need only look at the trailer and poster for 'Smallville: Absolute Justice' to see precisely why Tom Welling in the big screen adaptation of Green Lantern is a completely, shockingly, unbelievably bad idea. The second they do that, they're telling the audience – in no uncertain terms – that the film shares its continuity with a television series. It has nothing to do with liking 'Smallville' or not… but anyone who can't see that the quality of 'Green Lantern' has to be far above that of a TV show is literally mad.

Having said that, I would love nothing more than for someone with Chris Nolan's intelligence to assist in linking all the DC characters with his 'Batman' universe. Many think it can't be done but – the way I see it – there's no reason why 'Batman Begins' and 'The Dark Knight' can't be set prior to any appearance or knowledge of superheroes. Batman himself could be our eyes, hearing of their existence for the first time and investigating the phenomenon in an increasingly crazy world – just as we will no doubt see Tony Stark grapple with previously unfathomable gods like Thor at some point.

Personally, I'd love to see Nolan abandon his arguably shortsighted distaste for the super powers concept and introduce Superman into the third 'Batman' film. Wait! Stay with me. It would have to occur slowly and carefully, of course, so as not to disturb the established look and feel… but I think it could be done. The vigilante man on the run we saw in the end of 'The Dark Knight' is a perfect reason to have Superman on his tail in a Batman vs. Superman scenario and we needn't see Supe's reveal until late in the film. Rather, have him in the shadows, stalking Batman/Bruce and giving Warner Bros what they no doubt want anyway: a “dark” Superman of sorts. Superman as narrative “villain”, in spite of his still-noble point-of-view.

Call me crazy… but I think it could work. And we could have the makings of a series even more engaging than what Marvel's cooking up. :o)

  13. And I always will, because that is what Superman would do.

I also disregard the comment below, Tom Welling could easily play Clark on the big screen, the production values of Smallville have nothing to do with his talents as an actor.

  14. I'm gonna go with calling you crazy man haha Superman v.s. Batman? I think it'd be cheesy…. I dunno. I'm not a Superman fan.

  15. I don't think they need to have a cameo… It would be nice, but it's not really important. If it's just a good movie then I'll be happy. Maybe they're lying though?? Maybe there will be a cameo and they want to throw us off? I dunno… wishful thinking

  16. DC is freaking making me angry everyday. I wanted to see that superman cameo more then anything and DC pop the balloon again. I want a superman in production fast. Screw the rest of the character Superman and Batman are the main super stars in DC. DComics should start getting more serious into there films. Cause if not Marvel is gonna eat there ass for good. Oh and keep Brandon Routh for superman.

  17. 1 – Batman VS Superman is WB's dream movie. It won't happen anytime soon, but remember the scene in I AM LEGEND? Where the Superman VS Batman movie logo was on the building? It'll eventually happen

2 – GL will just fine without having Superman in it. But should there be a small AFTER credits type of bit, then I sure as heck hope that Tom Welling is the one playing Superman/Clark Kent

3 – Smallville is going to get one more season, it is my full out belief that WB plans to use Welling and Smallvilles growing popularity to the max. The only way to make peace with the Superman world/universe is to make a Superman movie WITH Welling. This way we don't need to do some lame ass origin movie. They can just watch seasons 1 – 10 of Smallville if they need to.
