MTV Splash Page “stumbled upon” the great idea of doing a weekly feature where they fantasy-cast the roles of some of the biggest and yet-to-be-cast superhero movies that are currently in the pipeline (truly an original concept).
If you’ve already seen our own Screen Rant features like “Potential villains of Wolverine 2“, “Should The Joker & Two-Face Return for Batman 3?” or any of our excellent Avengers-related features, you already get the idea: it’s fun to pretend that you (the audience) control the movie universe.
Well, for their inaugural post, Splash Page speculates on which actors are best fit to be painted purple in order to play Hal Jordan’s mentor-turned-nemesis, Sinestro, opposite Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Green Lantern.
And I have to say, it’s a pretty impressive list.

Here are the actors that Splash Page nominated:
Daniel Day-Lewis
Danny Huston (Wolverine, Clash of the Titans)
Jeremy Irons
Guy Pearce
Gary Oldman
You’ll have to head over to the actual Splash Page article if you want to see pics of the actors (do they look the part of Sinestro?) as well as quick blurbs as to why they would be good fits for the role. For our purposes here, let’s recap who Sinestro is, and what he means to mythos of Green Lantern.
For those who don’t know, when Hal Jordan is first awarded his power ring and summoned to Oa, home base of the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro is the most celebrated (and feared) member of the corps. He takes Hal Jordan under his wing and teaches him the ropes. The turning point in their relationship comes when Sinestro is empowered with a yellow ring (weakness of Green Lanterns) and his ambitions for universal martial order finally bubble to the surface, forcing Hal to become the proverbial student who ultimately bests the teacher.

In the years since that initial setup, Hal and Sinestro have gone at it time and again, most recently in acclaimed DC Comics (and DC/WB films) writer Geoff Johns’ now-classic “Sinestro Corps War” storyline. DC Universe’s recent animated feature, Green Lantern: First Flight, also made great use of Sinestro – so good, in fact, that the character’s descent into villainy completely overshadows the origin story of Hal Jordan.
Sinestro is a complicated character, to say the least. The best analogy I can think of would be Denzel Washington’s Detective Alonzo Harris in Training Day: Sinestro is essentially a veteran cop who views the system as broken and the laws as guidelines to be side-stepped, stretched, or even outright broken. He’s also a master manipulator – a tactic he employs until the moment arrives to start kicking ass, in which case Sinestro is as brutal and ruthless as they come.
I say all that to say: It’s going to take a VERY strong actor to truly nail all the subtleties of Sinestro – especially if earlier script reports are true, and Sinestro will actually play more of a “Senator Palpatine role” (a mentor with shades of villainy) for much of this first Green Lantern film. Remember, Denzel Washington earned an Oscarâ„¢ for nailing such a complicated role – you think about it like that, suddenly you start wondering if maybe they SHOULDN’T be pushing for a heavyweight like Daniel Day-Lewis to take on the part. I’m just saying, the man WOULD be great…

Daniel Day-Lewis as Sinestro? (Not that it would ever happen)
What do you think: what kind of actor is it going to take to do Sinestro justice? Do you agree with MTV’s picks?
The Green Lantern is set to hit theaters on June 17, 2011 – that’s IF it can straighten out its current budgetary woes and still make it into production on time this fall.

Out of all those names Daniel day lewis is intriguing he woul be a good Sinestro but good luck getting him.I don’t think he’s a comic book fan kinda guy plus I don’t think he would agree to possible 3 sequels if this movie is a success.Your best bet and choice is Hugo Weaving he has that look plus he’s done some movie sequels …Um! what was that movie…Matrix? was it?
Don’t forget he was also in the LOTR trilogy as well
@ The Next
Sinestro NEVER looked trustworthy in the 30 years I have been reading GL comics..He has always appeared and was arrogant but it was tolerated because he was considered the best GL in the universe..Geoff Johns can be thanked for the bad@$$ Sinetro we will see in GL movies..He took the character to a whole new level and made hime more than a lightweight bed wetter with a yellow costume..
I am really looking forward to seeing this come to lide on the big screen..
I’ll reiterate my choice from the beginning and that is Hugo Weaving!!
Hugo Weaving is a REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY good choice. Let’s Post about it!
I love Daniel Day Lewis, but he’d never do a Green Lantern movie, even with a gun to his head, so failing that my top choices for Sinestro are Clancy Brown, Hugo Weaving, Bill Moseley, and Hugh Laurie.
While I’m at it Miuchael C. Hall for Hector Hammond!
Yeah
aside from Jeremy Irons I do like Hugo Weaving, but I wouldn’t want him to play a corney version of agent Smith either.
Time machine would be the best solution! A 40 yr old Leonard Nimoy from the mid -70’s would be friggen genius. A mid 40’s Peter Sellers. Young thinner Orson Welles. And hell we could get young Shatner to play Hal Jordon.
A time machine would solve much of the crappy movie problems we face today. We could get real men’s men instead of the effiminate queens we have to choose from today. Heck we wouldn’t need to get all our action stars from rugged Australia. imagine young John Wayne or Steve McQueen as Duke, Sean Connery (fresh of his Mr. Universe contest) as Bruce Wayne, Shatner as Kirk and GL, How’s bout a young muscled up Gary Cooper as Supes? How bout Young Lee van Cleef as a modern day villian? Guys who really knew how to throw a punch (because most of them grew up knowing how to really fight in real life through tough uprbringings or service in the war, instead of the poser pansies with their affliction shirts, wannbe prison tats and tapout punching bags)
We need a Time Machine now more than ever!!!!!!!!!!! With It I could go back to 1980 and bang the S**T out of Victoria Principal!!!
Hey this would be my line up for the Green Lantern movie
Green Lantern / Hal Jordan : Ryan Reynolds ( Given)
Sinestro :Hugo Weaving
Carol Ferris: Rachel Mcadams
Guy Gardner : Sean William Scott
Kilowog : Paul Wight (Big Show wrestler)
John Stewart: Common ( rapper)
Ganthet: David Dinklage
Hector Hammond: Jeremy Irons
whadya think?
HUGO WEAVING HAS THAT BROW, THE SKILLS, THE SWAGGER…THIS IS THE ONLY CHOICE
JOHNEY DEPP?? i want to see depp in a truley brutal and evil role
HUGO WEAVING is “THE” perfect choice to play SINESTRO. I agree w/ all the others who say that WEAVING is “THE” best choice. Put that pale red skin on him & voila……SINESTRO!
Jeremy Irons is. . . well a bit old for the part. I think. Hugo Weaving could be brilliant. I also think that Gary Oldman could do it, but he’d have to bulk up and look more . . . yeah.
Jason Issacs!
There ya go.

oldman or irons would be great
gotta agree with a few others, oldman would rock the shit as sinestro…same with irons..daniel day lewis would be ideal, but yeah..good luck making that happen
ps..relatively new to the posting lol, apologize for my bad language..meant sh*t
upon further review, im leaning towards…jason isaacs..he could totally pull it off
Christopher Eccleston. From Dr. Who and G.I. Joe.
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3170277120/nm0001172
Christopher Eccleston would be marvelous or Daniel Day Lewis two of the finest actors in the Industry today, as Sinestro either one of these guys would be great.
No one has said the obvious choice.
Hugo Weaving.
@ Terry Erickson
Dude I hope you are joking because he was mentioned in the second post on this thread and quite frequently after that…
Hugo Weaving would be perfect, he’s a great actor and always does well in sci-fi roles.
SINESTRO has to be a few years older than HAL JORDAN. The right person should be picked to play SINESTRO. I agree w/ most when they think that HUGO WEAVING is THE right man for the role.
how about the dude from the burn notice show or eric mccormack. hugo weaving would be my first choice as well.

Aww c’mon Green Lantern blows chunks, always did. Lantern is about as cool a superhero as Aquaman. DC should just stick to their Superman, Batman, and graphic novel franchises and quit torturing us with these lame dorks.
Tim Roth (General Thad and Abomination)
Mark Strong, Gary Oldman, Robert Knoepper, or Hugo Weaving.
