Green Lantern fans were in a frenzy last week when the official trailer for director Martin Campbell’s film adaptation hit the web, along with a new poster that showed off the planet Oa.

While Ryan Reynold’s Hal Jordan will have to face off against the psychic Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) in Green Lantern, he will also have to battle the living embodiment of fear itself, Parallax – and now we have a better idea of what that villainous creature will look like in the film.

Readers may recall the following excerpt from the official Green Lantern synopsis:

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

It was revealed six years ago, in the comic book retcon miniseries Green Lantern: Rebirth, that Parallax is in fact an alien parasite that wreaks havoc on planets by causing their populations to destroy themselves out of fear and paranoia.

The Daily Blam! has provided the following picture – which reportedly comes from an upcoming issue of the Green Lantern comic – of the creature Parallax, much like it will appear in the movie adaption:

The fact that Parallax will appear in Green Lantern, in combination with the monster’s shared history with Hal Jordan from the original comic (Parallax was behind the character’s villainous turn back in the ’90s), suggests that the film may overall strike a darker tone, similar to the recut Green Lantern trailer, rather than the more comedic atmosphere of the official theatrical preview.

It should also be noted that Parallax’s presence in the Green Lantern movie suggests a trilogy arc that could include recent famous Green Lantern storylines like “The Sinestro Corps War“, “The War of Light” and “Blackest Night“.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!!! (Rollover text below to read)

At the very least, Parallax will likely be responsible for Sinestro’s (Mark Strong) eventual betrayal of the Green Lantern Corps and the creation of his yellow power ring.

Green Lantern hits 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on June 17th, 2011, so we’ll find out for certain then.

  1. That’s what I think fear looks like, a parasite. Very nicely done. Looking forward to this flick

  2. Yes yes yessssss. With all these villains in the movie and Geoff Johns was overseeing production means that we’re in for one hell of a story.

  3. That’s pretty much how Parallax has always looked. Cool!

  4. Looks like something out of a Guillermo del Toro movie. If it’s true, then I think I’ll definitely go see Green Lantern when it hits theaters next year.

  5. Looks good to me.
But I take issue with the idea of Parallax being responsible for Sinestro’s explusion from the Corps.
Sinestro is basically a fascist. He believes in order above everything else, and maintaining order through fear and intimidation.
He uses Parallax as a tool and weapon, but his motivation is personal and ideological. He’s a more depthful character that way, I find. Just saying “Oh, he’s possessed by a yellow fear monster” isn’t as interesting as him just having an opposing viewpoint to the methods of the Guardians and the Corps.

    • But I suppose Parallax COULD act as a kind of catalyst or inspiration for Sinestro.
He could see Parallax, the embodiment of fear and it could spur him to action, inspire him to finally put his worldview into action and use.

    • Totally agree Xigar. Really hope they don’t make him into a good guy that turns bad because of Parallax.

      • I think the implication is that Parallax provides a means for Sinestro accomplishing his goals.

        • I read that Parallax possesses Hammond which could make sense since you see his eyes glow bright yellow in the trailer.

          • That makes sense, but Hector Hammond does seem like Parallax’s “type”.
He isn’t motivated by fear so much as envy or greed.
But I suppose Parallax recently possessed The Flash as well, so I guess it goes for anyone powerful it can get…….

          • If you read the official synopsis for the movie, it says Hammond is infected by a piece of Parallax he finds in Abin Sur’s ship, maybe he uses that to set the actual Parallax free from his prison inside the OA power battery, thus leading Sinestro to see the power of yellow and be seduced by the yellow side of the force.

            Thats how I see it.

  6. Sorry folks, the studio requested we pull the image. We’ll post an official “sanctioned” version when it is released (Calling Warner Bros…)

  7. i think the actor selection should in itself serve as an idea as to where theyre heading with sinestro.

  8. can someone tell me, cos i saw this image at another site : http://splashpage.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/parallax.jpg was that the image you had posted up?

    • That would be it. Good to know other sites are getting to keep their images posted…

      • looks awesome

  9. Definitely looks like a parasite, but I can’t tell what’s it legs or its arms. Other than that, that looks pretty creepy. Just think, in the comics he was able to make himself the size of the Empire State Building. How would terrified would you be if you saw that?

  10. Ughh blackest night.

  11. ok that sucks!i wanted to see it,

    • Check red skulls link ;)

  12. I hope they keep with that design. So Hector Hammond is the main villain, and Parallax is going to kinda be “behind the works”, or what?

  13. its gonna be goood

  14. Well I have to say the did a pretty good job with Paralax however I’mreally pissed that they’re already going with a paralax story I mean yellow being the rings weakness is one thing but paralax wasn’t actually known to exist until how far into the Green Lantern series. And just an update on what paralax is to the films story basically it looks like he’s the reason for Abin Surs death and it looks as though he takes over Hector Hammond which I think is so stupid. I’m sorry but by the looks of it so far they have completly screwed up my favorite comic book character which I can honestly say is no surprise coming from DC/Warner Brothers. They are just looking for a replacement for Harry Potter so they rushed Green Lantern and they know people will go see it because they love the character. I’m completely bashing what it looks like and I’ll wind up seeing it just because I love the character so much. And this is why Hollywood keeps ruining our favorite characters and destroying everything movie making is because we keep paying to go see even the stupidest films IE Anything produced by UWE BOLL and company.

  15. Hm. Why must we not even get a TASTE at the villain? I call FOUL, and a major “FAIL,” Warner Bros. “FAIL,” I say. “FAIL.”

  16. Despite hating everything I’ve seen on the film so far it would be nice if they do the story with Hal getting infected like in the comics.

    • I fhtey did that for the second film, have Hal becoming the villain with Parallax inside him, and destroying the Green Lanterns, have Kyle or John introduced, then have the third film as Hal’s redemption and Sinestro Corps War.

      That would be great.

  17. I saw the trailer for Green Lantern at Deathly Hallows and is it just me… or does Hal flying awkwardly kinda looked like the GREATEST AMERICAN HERO?

I know it’s an origin movie and he’d half to “get used to” flying, but they should underscore it with. “believe or not, I’m walking on airrrr, I never thought i could be soooooo freeeeeee!!!!”

    • When I saw Deathly Hallows, do you not what trailers I saw? Unstoppable and that was it. No Green Lantern or Cowboys And Aliens.

Was annoyed. It’s not like I havent seen the trailers before but I’d liked to have seen them on the big screen.

    • LOL, someone should overlay that song onto the trailer. :)

      • if i only had the time.
