What with all the Captain America, Superman: Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Rises, and Thor news lately, Green Lantern is starting to feel like the odd man out. By the way, Warner Bros., where is that second trailer?

To tide fans over until something more substantial hits, Green Lantern – the comic book – has been releasing stills and images from the movie with every issue. We’ve seen Tomar-Re, Sinestro, Bzzd, and Kilowog, and now, with issue #64, we get our best look yet at Abin Sur, as played by Temuera Morrison (Jango Fett in Star Wars: Episode II, Attack of the Clones).

For those unfamiliar with Abin Sur, the pinkest Green Lantern in the Corps, DC Comics Executive Editor Eddie Berganza has very graciously provided a bio:

A courageous alien from the planet Ungara, this Green Lantern was charged with protecting sector 2814. His deeds were grand, but he gained true immortality with his actions in the moment of his death. Having crashed to Earth in his vessel, he sent his power ring to seek out a successor – someone worthy to carry on the mantle. It selected a man capable of overcoming great fear – test pilot Hal Jordan. The rest is cosmic history told in the Book of Oa.

Berganza goes on to praise Abin Sur’s design in the film, inspired by frequent Green Lantern artist Ivan Reis (Blackest Night):

We saw the first glimpse of Abin last year at Comic Con as his dead body was placed on display. But here we get to see how Abin is brought to life on screen – and how amazingly and vibrantly the emerald light flows off him.

Uh, I don’t know about that, Eddie. I’m not seeing a whole lot of light, emerald or otherwise, flowing anywhere in this new picture. Regardless, Berganza continues:

It’s clear that the movie team is taking great care to translate to the silver screen the amazing artwork and designs of former Green Lantern artist Ivan Reis concocted in the “Secret Origin” arc that inspired the film.

The look of Abin Sur is certainly one of the more interesting ones in the film, but I can’t tell if I believe that simply because there’s actual, physical makeup involved – as opposed to, you know, CGI – or if it’s just because I genuinely appreciate it on an aesthetic level. Still, it’s hard to argue with a design that can be described as a neon pink version of Body Worlds.

Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern hits theaters June 17th, 2011.

  1. So far, I’ve been happy with the various designs for this film (Abin Sur, being no exception), but yes, I am waitingwaitingwaiting for the second trailer…!

    • I’m not too sure, but last I heard, the second trailer is linked with Sucker Punch, right?

  2. This looks so much better than the scans that have been online for the last week.

  3. I am confused why DC is not marketing this movie better. i have high hopes for it but their marketing game for this movie is sad. i mean look at marvel and their press releases for thor, cap, and xmen . whats goin on dc. how can you expect this movie to be a hit if you dont advertise it

    • I have a feeling that they’ll ramp up advertising once Thor comes out. Although I am surprised we’ve not seen more than we have. Then again, this like has more CGI than an average film. The movie may just be complete enough to show any of it.

  4. this is another fine example why i love love love physical make up over CGI any day. There’s a realness to it that you just cant capture with a computer.

  5. Holy crap, it’s Ivan Ooze!

    • LOL!!

  6. I’m in!

  7. Looks great, and note that his costume is totally different in texture to any of the others we have seen so far.

  8. Sucker Punch comes out tomorrow ,
and we dont even have a trailer description yet.
So I wouldnt count on that trailer coming out tomorrow.

  9. We didn’t get a trailer description for the first one. So why not? Sucker Punch is the next big WB movie so it would only make sense, here’s to hoping.

    • Next big movie? Sucker Punch? In the same sentence?

      • Oh dude, I didn’t mean “big” like “award winning” big or anything lol.

  10. hmm

  11. I really hope this movie does well, but looking at this picture, my first thought was that this particular Lantern went by the name of “Beet”…lol

  12. Horrible character design. The CG suit is not working. Why did they choose to have Imageworks do the CGI for this film? Their work is really substandard. They did Harry Potter 1, Superman Returns, Spider-Man to name a few and all of it is just hard to look at. They should’ve gone with ILM or Weta.

  13. Meh… He looks alright, but I’m still disappointed with the CGI suits for the Lanterns. I’m just hoping at this point for a great and epic story that does the Green Lantern justice. I had such high hopes for this movie until I saw the trailer and how bad the suit looked… So story is all I can hope for now, cause the visuals aren’t going to get much better… Though I hope I’m wrong…

  14. For a dead alien,, he’s looking pretty good–rather “in the pink”, one might say!

  15. i want GL to be far better then capt, and thor but i dont think it will and im a dc guy and i understand why the suit is cgi it does make sense the suit should look like the constructs but it looks to fake
