‘Green Lantern': Michael Clarke Duncan Voicing Kilowog [Updated]

[Update: Michael Clark Duncan has been offered the voice of Kilowog. Scroll down for the update.]

The guys over at Latino Review have dug up a scoop (as they are wont to do) regarding the Green Lantern movie.

The word is that Michael Clarke Duncan (Daredevil, The Green Mile) is in talks to voice Kilowog, the towering alien drill sergeant of The Green Lantern Corps.

For those who don’t know much about Kilowog, here’s a breakdown of the character as told by our own Ben Moore:

Despite being physically imposing and utterly unattractive, Kilowog is best known for his heart of gold and tendency to use the word “poozer” as an endearing insult. Basically, he’s the Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman combined with Lenny from Of Mice and Men. And they say comic books can’t be literature…

Up until now we’ve gotten looks at the intricate CGI work that is being employed in order to create the character of Kilowog onscreen, but we haven’t yet heard a peep (pun intended) about who might be voicing the character. MCD would be a good – and obvious, if you think about it – pick for the hulking character.

Just pause for a minute and try to imagine these baritone tones coming out of Kilowog’s rhinoceros mouth:

Kilowog has made a few appearances in DC animated fare like Justice League, Green Lantern: First Flight, and the upcoming Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. In each case, a sturdy-voiced actor has stepped up to give Kilowog…er, voice, including Dennis Haysbert (24, The Unit), Michael Madsen (Kill Bill) and actor/rocker Henry Rollins.

I for one still imagine Haysbert’s voice filling those little dialogue bubbles whenever I read a Green Lantern comic these days.  It’s interesting to note that while I do trust the sources over at Latino Review, IMDb actually has Haysbert listed as the voice of Kilowog in the movie (with John Larroquette voicing Tomar-Re?). No matter how this ultimately pans out, I’ll be happy; Duncan is a close second on my personal wish-list of Kilowog voices (if ever there was such a thing).

We’ll let you know if this pans out, but for now, consider it RUMOR.

Update: THR reports that Duncan has been extended an offer to voice Kilowog – and he is currently negotiating (though it’s expected he’ll soon be on-board).

Green Lantern will be in theaters on June 17th. Look for the second trailer to debut (ironically enough) alongside Marvel’s Thor.

  1. I’ll take LR’s word over IMDB’s anyday. Anyway, seems like a good choice.

  2. MCD would be an awesome choice…or JM or MC would also be good choices.

    • eye

  3. I liked him as Kingpin (movie and script still sucked), he was large and powerful the way the character should be.

Its kinda late in the game to announce a voice casting now but whatever, good choice.

  4. Please let this be true:D I think it would be awesome for someone with Duncan’s reputation in movies he has been in so far (Green Mile and not really counting Daredevil even thoug he was good in that movie as well) to voice Kilowog:D

  5. its funny we going to get two actors who starred in both Marvel movies produce by FOX Studio in a WB/DC films Green Lantern lol

  6. This would be super awesome. Supsome even.

  7. IF this turns out to be true, then I WILL be seeing GL for sure!!

  8. (As they are wont to do) lol what does that mean :).

    • “As is customary for them”, good sir!

      • I read it wrong thought I was a typo “won’t” instead of “wont” silly me :)

  9. That’s not going to make me want to see Green Lantern. BTW I don’t believe Robinov for a second that the delays in releasing a second GL trailer was due to 3D. I’d have more respect for him if he said they were scrambling to salvage the film after negative reviews from the 1st trailer.

  10. Cracking choice! But I agree about Dennis Haysbert, who better to voice the live action version than the best US President Of All Time!!!

  11. I am kinda particle to Haysbert as well for killawog’s voice

  12. Kevin Grevioux from ‘Underworld’ would be perfect!!
    Awesome voice!!

  13. I like Keith David for the voice of Kilowog

  14. I personally don’t think MCD’s voice is rough enough to match Kilowog. Of course the CGI version of Kilwog doesn’t match Kilowog either so……eh.

  15. Deadline. com has confirmed Geofrey Rush will be voicing Toma Re.
but they said he is uncredited.
They are definitely trying to get some star power for these voices.

  16. Geoffrey Rush will be voicing TOMAR RE!
    Sorry about the misspelling.

  17. Deadlines report also says there will be some new footage from the film shown at CinemaCon tomorrow in Las Vegas.
That footage might answer a lot of questions about who is voicing The Green lanterns, including Kilowog.

  18. I really hope this is true MCd just has that deep booming voice that says I pity da fool that don’t come see my movies
