[Update: Michael Clark Duncan has been offered the voice of Kilowog. Scroll down for the update.]
The guys over at Latino Review have dug up a scoop (as they are wont to do) regarding the Green Lantern movie.
The word is that Michael Clarke Duncan (Daredevil, The Green Mile) is in talks to voice Kilowog, the towering alien drill sergeant of The Green Lantern Corps.
For those who don’t know much about Kilowog, here’s a breakdown of the character as told by our own Ben Moore:
Despite being physically imposing and utterly unattractive, Kilowog is best known for his heart of gold and tendency to use the word “poozer” as an endearing insult. Basically, he’s the Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman combined with Lenny from Of Mice and Men. And they say comic books can’t be literature…
Up until now we’ve gotten looks at the intricate CGI work that is being employed in order to create the character of Kilowog onscreen, but we haven’t yet heard a peep (pun intended) about who might be voicing the character. MCD would be a good – and obvious, if you think about it – pick for the hulking character.
Just pause for a minute and try to imagine these baritone tones coming out of Kilowog’s rhinoceros mouth:
Kilowog has made a few appearances in DC animated fare like Justice League, Green Lantern: First Flight, and the upcoming Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. In each case, a sturdy-voiced actor has stepped up to give Kilowog…er, voice, including Dennis Haysbert (24, The Unit), Michael Madsen (Kill Bill) and actor/rocker Henry Rollins.
I for one still imagine Haysbert’s voice filling those little dialogue bubbles whenever I read a Green Lantern comic these days. It’s interesting to note that while I do trust the sources over at Latino Review, IMDb actually has Haysbert listed as the voice of Kilowog in the movie (with John Larroquette voicing Tomar-Re?). No matter how this ultimately pans out, I’ll be happy; Duncan is a close second on my personal wish-list of Kilowog voices (if ever there was such a thing).
We’ll let you know if this pans out, but for now, consider it RUMOR.
Update: THR reports that Duncan has been extended an offer to voice Kilowog – and he is currently negotiating (though it’s expected he’ll soon be on-board).
Green Lantern will be in theaters on June 17th. Look for the second trailer to debut (ironically enough) alongside Marvel’s Thor.
