Jackie Earle Haley Confirmed For Sinestro?

HitFix‘s Drew McWeeny is reporting that he’s been doing some journalistic legwork tracking down news about who else will be cast in DC/WB’s upcoming adaptation of The Green Lantern, and, despite having been debunked late last year, those early rumors of Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen, Nightmare on Elm Street) playing Green Lantern‘s arch nemesis Sinestro are looking like they’re panning out to be true.

There are some particulars to discuss (aren’t there always?) so keep reading for a detailed breakdown of the situation…

Now, McWeeny makes it clear that he doesn’t know specifically whether or not Haley is already locked into the role, is in negotiations for the role, or (what is believed to be the case) is simply the studio’s primary choice for the role, based on the relationship he’s established with them while working on Watchmen and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

That latter scenario would make the most sense, since Haley has already made Watchmen‘s Rorschach into a big-screen icon, and despite some negative early responses to the film, we’ve nonetheless heard that Haley’s turn as the new Freddy Krueger is a highlight of Elm Street. The man can tackle those big fanboy iconic roles and Sinestro is certainly that.

green lantern hal vs sinestro Jackie Earle Haley Confirmed For Sinestro? Sinestro vs. Hal Jordan

Also keep in mind: we know from early script reviews that Sinestro’s role in this first Green Lantern film is a supporting one, likely as  a mentor or drill sergeant type for Green Lantern new recruit – and the movie’s hero – Hal Jordan (who will be played by Ryan Reynolds). Unless you’ve been under a rock and know nothing of the Green Lantern comic book series, then you’re already anticipating the iconic movie moment when Sinestro dons a yellow ring and reveals himself to be the badass arch villain he ultimately becomes. Expect that later in The Green Lantern trilogy.

The film has been given the official go-ahead and is gearing up for production, so casting news has started coming at us fast and furious, with the back-to-back announcements that Blake Lively will be playing the love-interest, Carol Ferris and that Peter Saarsgard will play evil telepath Hector Hammond, one of the film’s confirmed villains. The other villain in the film is the hive-minded alien warrior known as Legion, which will likely be brought to life through SFX work.

green lantern hugo weaving sinestro Jackie Earle Haley Confirmed For Sinestro?

For my money I’ve been screaming that actor Hugo Weaving has the kind of Machiavellian chops to play a great Sinestro – but Jackie Earle Haley would be a close second. If Haley is indeed taking on the role, how do you feel about it? Good casting choice?

The Green Lantern is slated to beam into theaters on June 17, 2011. It is being helmed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale).

  1. Very good choice. Cant wait to see him suited up. Can he play smug, high and mighty? Probably. Playing bad is so easy… :D

  2. Haley is a great actor, and was amazing as Rorschach, but he's no Sinestro. The one glaring issue in my mind is that he's too short, way too short. Sinestro also isn't anything like Rorschach or Freddy Krueger, he's not dark and gloomy, he's more a villain like Hitler and Stalin were villains, and I can't really see Haley working in a role like that.

  3. Not sold on him doing this at all, Not sure why but I imagine Reynolds towers over JEH, and as I suspected the Sinestro storyline is being spread over possible sequels, what happens if the movie tanks? Of which there is a distinct possibility. We may never see the yellow Sinestro.

  4. I always thought Sinestro was short…. at least smaller in stature then GL?

  5. I just did an image search, and it looks like Sinestro should be either the same height as Hal, or a couple of inches taller. He strikes me as being a towering figure, anyways, as a representation of his authoritarian views.

  6. Must be the new Sinistro…. :D

  7. this is good news.. he's a great actor, really great and i believe that he will do a superb job:) i know he's not the tallest man on earth, but if needed i'm sure they can make him a bit taller :D it's not like he HAVE to be Reynolds height. but we'll see:p

  8. Height seems to be the main complaint when it comes characters being transferred to the big screen. Everybody was screaming the same way when Hugh Jackman was cast as Wolverine. If the actor is great, then let them play the role. I was one of those who was supporting the idea of Hugo Weaving, but it was not because of his height. Looking the part is one, but becoming the character is what's important.

  9. Okay…this is not good news at all…Haley does not have the screen presence to pull this off. Weaving does..as Kofi said above Hugo has that Machiavellian savoir faire to BE Sinestro…first Blake Lively now this!! The first two let downs on this film's production

  10. I think we will see the Yellow Sinestro @ the end of the first GL film..

  11. JAKIE EARLE HALEY kinda but he is small for sinestro is'nt he? While Hugo Weaving and the way he stands and the voice he is perfect for the role. While Mark Strong as sinestro? how and why? he does'nt look like the character. Hugo have been in good movie flicks even as support cast. Hope this could still be read by the casting people of the GL movie.
