Since the first footage of Green Lantern debuted at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con, fans have been rabidly debating the movie’s merits, arguing over everything from the quality of the first trailer to Ryan Reynolds’ all CGI costume.
Now, they’ll have one last chance to grill the cast of the film, prior to the release, this April at WonderCon in San Francisco.
In a press release today, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment announced that Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Peter Sarsgaard were scheduled to appear as special guests at the popular convention on its opening day, April 1st. The trio will do an autograph signing and then appear on a special panel to discuss the film. In a related event, Warner Bros. and DCE will also premiere the new animated feature, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights at WonderCon.
The signing begins at 4:00 PM on Friday, and the panel follows immediately after at 5:00 PM. While WonderCon isn’t nearly as crazy as Comic-Con (I’ve been to both, and WonderCon is much more laid-back), I would recommend getting there early. Green Lantern is easily one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and the signing and panel will definitely be a highlight of the convention.
In other Green Lantern news, Warner Bros. recently released two new images from the film. The stills, which are decidedly non-action packed, show Hal Jordan sharing a drink with Carol Ferris and also Hal contemplating the power of his ring. Check them out, via the French site MDCU, below.
As I mentioned before, Green Lantern has been the subject of a ton of discussion on the web and in Hollywood, where some industry insiders called the film “terrible.” Add in the fact that the movie is coming out during one of the most competitive years for superhero movies ever (Green Lantern is sandwiched between Thor in May and Captain America in July) and it’s easy to see just how much is resting on Hal Jordan’s superhero shoulders.
Hopefully, Warner Bros. uses WonderCon as one last chance to drum up all of the positive buzz it can around the film – to help drive it to a strong opening among both fanboys and critics. While convention buzz may not always be an accurate predictor for mainstream success, it never hurts to play to your core audience.
Green Lantern clocked in at number five on our list of the 20 most anticipated movies of 2011. The film hits theaters on June 17th, 2011.
