Carol Ferris Star Sapphire Who Will Play Green Lanterns Girlfriend?

El Mayimbe over at Latino Review has posted an exclusive report on the pool of actresses that are said to be in the final rounds of consideration for the role of Carol Ferris, the lady love interest of The Green Lantern, Hal Jordan.

Now, the list of actresses who will possibly star opposite Ryan Reynolds (who will be playing Hal Jordan) is a pretty nice collection of former or current TV and/or film stars. All of them are hot – some of them are even good actresses. We have a nice set of photos for you to look over and consider, which is certainly not a bad way to start your Monday.

If you remember, we got our first notion of how Carol Ferris would be portrayed in The Green Lantern earlier this fall when the casting call for Green Lantern supporting roles was released. here’s what the filmmakers said they were looking for:

[CAROL FERRIS]
26-32, a smart and attractive woman with an MBA. She started as a pilot and now runs Ferris Aircraft. She is a work-a-holic…FEMALE LEAD

Caorl Ferris is the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris, and has a crush on Hal Jordan.

Now that you have some context, take a look at the list of lovely ladies Latino Review has pegged for the final rounds of consideration:

Jennifer Garner (Alias, Elektra)

Diane Kruger (National Treasure, Inglourious Basterds)

Eva Green (Casino Royale)

Keri Russel (Mission: Impossible III)

Blake Lively (Gossip Girl)

I confess that my ordering of these photos isn’t random: in considering which actress would handle the role best and would also share the best onscreen chemistry with Ryan Reynolds, my top pick is definitely Jennifer Garner. Blake Lively? No thanks.

Please also take into account: in the comic books, Carol Ferris eventually goes from being Hal Jordan’s love interest to being Green Lantern’s nemesis, Star Sapphire (see header pic), after she is possessed by a violet sapphire stone imbued with light powers much like Green Lantern’s emerald power ring (see the history of that story by going HERE).

It’s too early to tell just closely the storyline of The Green Lantern (more likely the sequels) will follow this particular mythos of Ferris’ character, but in case it goes that way, the actress playing Carol Ferris would need to be able to tackle the role of Star Sapphire down the road. For my money, Jennifer Garner works best for that.

How about you? Which of these actresses would you prefer to see in The Green Lantern? Share your thoughts.

  1. The ladies you suggest are lovely but none are my choice. i would prefer either Rosario Dawson, Megan Fox or Jessica Alba. :D

  2. @ sookie – sorry but if rumors are true, these are the final list of candidates. Not so much ‘my suggestions.’

Hope you can live with at least ONE of them ;-)

  3. I love Eva Green, but I just can’t see her in the role, don’t know why. Jennifer Garner….not so much either, but if this is really the final candidates, I think they could definitely go with her. As for Kruger and Russel, they could have a chance too, just please no Blake Lively or whatever her name is.

  4. Diane Kruger she was awsome in inglorious bastards. Plus she is not not tainted by other super hero roles elektra daredevil cough cough.

  5. Personally, I’d love Jennifer Garner to tackle it but I keep thinking of her as Elektra and I’m not sure how I’d like her to suddenly jump into the DC world. Kerri Russel looks like she’d be a good pick. She’s come along way since her Mickey Mouse and Felicity days… Blake Lively? Please God no. Leave her on Gossip Girl and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Eva Green and Diane Kruger are “fresher” faces, meaning they’re not as “famous” as the other candidates so they’ve got a good chance just by working that angle. By hiring one of them, they can keep Ryan Reynolds as the star without being overshadowed by his co star. But with all that said, I think Kerri’s my pick…

  6. Keri Russell seems too sweet for the role, but she might be able to pull it off. I’m just not sure she & Ran Reynolds would have chemistry. Eva Green doesn’t seem able to mask her accent enough. Jennifer Garner, like Reynolds, already has a comic book role under her belt. I don’t know who the other actress is. I think I’m leaning towards Diane Kruger, simply because she works well off of other actors & has an underlying intensity that would work well in a villainous role.

  7. Ryan, not Ran, obviously.

  8. Not fond of any of these choices….

  9. Keri Russell is the best choice, she can be sweet and make action (see M:I:III).

Jennifer Garner already had her chance in superheroes movies, Blake Livgely is too young, Eva Green looks too “dramatic” and Diane Kruger could work too, but Keri needs a role in a big movie, it was unfair she lost the role of Lois Lane in Superman Returns.

  10. I’d like to preface this by saying I’m not at all familiar with the Green Lantern comics outside of surface facts (power comes from a ring, etc.) but from the description of the Ferris character I think Garner is the best option from the finalists listed. Lively, no thanks; Russel, not really enough edge to her; Green, honestly don’t know enough about her and hardly remember her from Casino Royale; and Kruger just seems like the pretty girl who tags along on the adventure, not really an action player (didn’t see Inglorious Bastards yet though, could be wrong). Garner’s kicked butt before and even though she was a Marvel property before, so was Reynolds.

  11. I’m gonna echo the sentiment of a few of the other commenters when I say none of the above.

Being a fairly huge fan of the Green Lantern series (I’ve been reading it since the relaunch in the early nineties), I would have to say that I would like an actress that can pull off the intelligence, attractiveness, no-nonsense, and yet vulnerable side that Carol has, and I don’t see that in the list mentioned above. She is more than a match for Hal Jordan, and she seemingly challenges him more so than most of his villains.

If this were my fantasy draft pick, which sadly I know it isn’t, I would go with: Jennifer Connelly. I know she’s a bit older than the age range (not that she looks it). She is still under 40, has an Oscar under her belt, and can act circles around the listed ladies above. On the plus side, she actually looks like Carol too.

  12. From what I can see in header pic, I don’t think ANY of those choices are capable of “filling out” Star Sapphires’ costume!

  13. @ Packy

I would agree with Jennifer Connelly had they made this movie 10 years ago..ahe would be PERFECT to play Carol

  14. I think Emily Blunt would really work as Carol Ferris

  15. Jennifer Connelly is only a year and half older than Jennifer Garner.

  16. @ Rebecca

Then she’s the one for me..

  17. @greenknight333

I think Emily Blunt could be a good choice, however; can she actually lose the accent and play a proper American character? I’ve only over seen movies where she spoke in her native dialect.

  18. Which one has the biggest, um, “assets”? She can then fill out the costume pretty well! :P

Garner could do it, but I think Kruger would be better.

On a side note, isn’t it funny how much the classic picture of Carol looks ALOT like Lois Lane? :D

  19. “All of them are hot – some of them are even good actresses.”

LOL….that quote made my day! Thanks!

  20. Why isn’t Jennifer Connelly on this list? She would be perfect! Well, except she is getting up in years. But she is only 2 years older than Jennifer Garner. Connelly has black hair and blue eyes, just like Carol in the comics. And she has a smart and sassy air about her, just like Carol.

I agree with an earlier poster – Garner is already settled in as Elektra. Diane may be good. Keri is too sweet. I don’t watch GOSSIP GIRL, so I know nothing about whatever her name is.

Why is Eva Green on this list? She is an OK actress, but she is very average looking! Come on!

  21. Jennifer Garner = not hot. Girl has the face and hands of a man. Shave her head and she could be a man. I’ve talked about this for years and every guy I have ever asked thought she was a dog. I have seen her in two different movies where someone (not me although I wanted to clap after) barked like a dog when she came on screen. Ghosts of GFs past was the last one. So many other hot girls and he falls for the manly one. Man Face, Man Face, Man Face!!!! please anyone but her. I cannot watch her as the love interest in a movie. beauty is only so important but for the love of heaven I’d like to have at least a little in my green lantern movie. I’m pretty excited for this film but if she’s in it I will automatcily cease to care.

  22. I believe the Jennifer Connellys have it! Now we just need the WB to make it so!

  23. I actually really like the connley idea… can we just announce that she has accepted the role and see if the studio will just go with it???

  24. “I’m pretty excited for this film but if she’s in it I will automatcily cease to care.”

    I call B*** S***.

  25. Guys, this is not MY LIST. This is THE LIST of actresses reportedly being considered by the studio.

  26. @Kofi

We know this isn’t your list…we just figure we can do better ;)

  27. you guys ever see that episode of the office, they had a great debate on wether or not garner was hot lol

the whole ep was the office fighting about it, hot … or not..

  28. Although, if we are trying to go for someone more age appropriate, Serinda Swan would do nicely. We can forward her name up to the studio too.

  29. @Kofi Outlaw D’oh!—not your suggestions, got it ;D That said, guess the fans have no choice but to live with whichever lady the studio decides to cast. i’m seldom happy with the casting choices the studios make on comic book adaptations.
O.T. i am very much looking forward to Red, particularly Julian McMahon :D
