Green Lantern Gets An Award-Winning Crew

Apart from Ryan Reynolds as the titular green-costumed hero, we haven’t had any casting confirmations (although we’ve had some speculation, particularly about the villain and the love interest) for the upcoming adaptation of The Green Lantern. We do know, however, that Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) will be handling the directing duties on the film.

But what about the rest of the crew? Well, the guys over at SuperHeroHype are reporting that Campbell has been “silently” working to pull together an award-winning crew to bring Green Lantern to the big-screen. We have the details here for you so what are you waiting for, read on below!

Firstly, Green Lantern – the first movie being produced under the new DC Entertainment banner – will be shot by award-winning cinematographer Dion Beebe, who won an Oscar for his work on Memoirs of a Geisha in 2006 (he was previously nominated for Chicago, too); for the look of the movie, Campbell has managed to get production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson, both of whom won Oscars for their work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy (Major was also nominated for his work on Peter Jackson’s King Kong).

And finally, we have art director Fran├žois Audouy, who may not have won any Oscars but has an impressive resume which includes (in various different capacities) such fare as the Spider-Man trilogy, Zodiac, I Am Legend and perhaps most significantly, James Cameron’s recent f/x extravaganza, Avatar.

So we may not have all our cast in place for Green Lantern quite yet, but the crew Campbell has managed to assemble is most impressive. As SuperHeroHype notes, probably the most important element to the behind-the-scenes stuff with this movie is the visual effects. Much like more casting announcements, I don’t imagine it’ll be that long before we hear which studio is handling the special effects – a shooting start date of April 2010 is already set.

In case you’re wondering about the f/x, Campbell spoke last month about that very thing and although he didn’t exactly say who would be creating them for the movie, he did speak about the scope of what has to be put onto the big-screen and the difficulties that presents. You can read what he had to say about it HERE.

What do you make of the top-notch crew Green Lantern is working with? What company would you like to see handle the visual effects? And who would you like to see join Ryan Reynolds in the cast?

Green Lantern is set to start shooting sometime in April, 2010 (in New Orleans) and has a release date of June 17th, 2011.

  1. How can he be Deadpool AND Green Lantern???

He should just be Flash instead….

  2. Why can’t he be both green lantern and deadpool? I don’t see it being a problem.

Green Lantern is shaping up to be pretty decent.

  3. ILM is my guess for the SFx. They already have top notch people for the rest of the crew, might as well have the best visual effects company too!

  4. anyone who worked on lord of the rings has my vote same with transformers u gotta admit those robots looked dam good.

  5. i just wish DCE is going the Avengers way with JLA sometime this decade

  6. If RDJ can be Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes then Ryan Reynolds can be Deadpool and Green Lantern IMO.

  7. im excited for this.

  8. Looks like Martin Campbell is making all the right moves so far..This is my most anticipated movie for 2011..and that’s saying something considering SM4, Thor and Captain America are all coming out in 2011

  9. But I only want to attribute him to one character not both, especially since they are quite similar characters. It’s like Bale being Bruce Wayne which is why I didn’t buy him as John Connor since I already knew him as Batman, you know?

I’d rather him be deadpool, anyone can be Green Lantern. Or Flash….

RDJ is different – one is a superhro, the other is a literary invention.

  10. @Steve (just being funny here) they are all literary inventions… some are just more colorful.

It shows the mettle of the actor. If he can pull off and be two different characters I got no problem.

Heck DP wears a full mask most of the time anyway.

What I would liek to see is him as GL, Flash and Aquaman. Just change the hair color and act. :D

  11. @greenknight333

Can you really muster up any excitement for Spiderman 4? Honestly, I can understand being excited for Thor and GL, even Captain America… But Spiderman?

  12. True it shows the actor’s worth but I’d still like different actors for my different hero’s, you know?

I’m excited for Spidey 4, because I actually enjoyed Spidey 3 – no masterpiece but it was entertaining none the less.

  13. What a great assembled crew. I'm really looking forward to this film as well.

In terms of what company to handle the visual effects, may I suggest “Rising Sun Pictures”.

They have done a lot of visual FX work on Hollywood films. Check out their website for a look at their portfolio.
