Green Lantern Official Trailer 2 Green Lantern 2 Will Be Edgy & Dark; The Flash Script is Solid

[Not So Fast! Seems Green Lantern 2 isn't so certain after all. Details HERE]

Green Lantern has its share of ardent defenders, but it was critically unloved and financially unsuccessful, which is why it came as a bit of a shock that the studio was still considering a sequel – just a week after the film’s release.

That said, it’s somewhat less surprising that they’re planning to go in a completely different direction with the film. Warner Bros. Film Group President Jeff Robinov recently gave an update on Green Lantern 2, as well as The Flash screenplay and their superhero film slate for the next few years.

Check it out Robinov’s thoughts below, courtesy of Hero Complex:

“We had a decent opening [of $53 million] so we learned there is an audience. To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action…. And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth.”

In other words, we have to find a way to make a quality movie.

The hidden sentiment in “we had a decent opening” is “we had a terrible box office performance in the aftermath.” According to some reports, Green Lantern cost Warner Bros. north of $300 million dollars. Not only did it perform poorly here in the United States – a final tally of $114 million – it has also performed poorly overseas — $40 million as of right now.

Alas, $155 million is quite a bit short of $300 million plus.

Green Lantern 2 already has an outline written by the original film’s writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim but, according to multiple anonymous sources, it’s likely that Warner will either make massive changes to it – or totally start-over from scratch.

Apparently, Warner Bros’ executives weren’t exactly pleased with Martin Campbell’s performance in directing the film either. While Campbell is definitely deserving of blame for the film’s failure, Warner should’ve known from the beginning that the film might not deliver the kind of character drama that fans were hoping for – since director’s best films – Goldeneye, The Mask of Zorro, and Casino Royale – are known for being barebones action films. Enormous CGI-heavy sci-fi epics have never really been his thing.

In the future, Warner needs to hire serious filmmakers with serious visions who seriously want to create a Green Lantern film – much like they did with Christopher Nolan and Batman Begins – instead of constructing a Green Lantern film outline and throwing a previously successful director at it to see if he sticks.

Furthermore, the success of these types of films is less about being dark and edgy, as Robinov claims, and more about taking the project seriously. Not the seriousness of the tone, mind you! Not that kind of seriousness. After all, some of the best superhero films (Superman and Spider-Man 2) are as far away from dark and edgy as it gets, but their filmmakers — Richard Donner and Sam Raimi — were seriously committed to making never-before-seen cinematic experiences.

Robinov also told Hero Complex that, after The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, Warner is moving forward with their other DC superhero properties – including Man of Steel in 2013, a possible Green Lantern 2 later that year or in 2014, followed by The Flash – which has a “solid script” – as well as the Justice League film.

Again, hopefully Warner Bros. hires serious filmmakers this time (auteurs, if you will) to bring their unique visions to the properties. Nobody wants to watch cookie-cutter, studio-crafted, lowest-common-denominator-catering superhero films. Not that we ever did.

What are your feelings about a darker, edgier Green Lantern 2? Let us know in the comments.

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th, 2012. Man of Steel hits theaters June 14th, 2013. Stay tuned for more DC superhero film news.

  1. A sequel is needed. The film needs a chance to shine once more again. Also with better previews and action pack scenes this move will get the break it needs to be a success.

  2. With the sequel I think Tom Hardy should play Guy Gardner, maybe Idris Elba or Michael Jai White for John Stewart. I think Michael Jai White would be a good John Stewart. I like the idea of Jared Padalecki as Kyle Rayner. Villains can be Sinestro Corps.

    • Agreed .

  3. The fans want another green lantern movie. Just make sure there isles action than the first, it took to long to setup the plot but awesome beginning.

  4. Green Lantern is a movie I watch every chance I get. There was so much put into it, and being that there was so much to work with, I can see how a first movie would start out sort of clunky and anti-climatic. However, the “dark & edgy” thing doesn’t really do it for me. If they want to go with dark and edgy, freaking bring the Sinestro Corps online! Kryb is the darkest, edgiest character you can do, and if, say, Guillermo del Toro did the movie, you’d get something that would seriously present the darkest night of Green Lantern that you could get.

    I’m just saying.

  5. Are these films even being Marketed properly? I remember as a child in the UK seeing ads for upcoming films on TV, now you’d be lucky if you saw one stuck to the side of a bus! If people don’t know what’s on at the cinema then what’s the call to action? With this in mind its not surprising many films (except James Bond and LOTR apparently) aren’t doing as well as they should. I absolutely adore all the DC and Marvel films and would be gutted if scripts were dumped for fear of failure.

  6. I seriously want them to make a Green Lantern 2. I loved the film regardless of what ther people said, it was awsume!!!! I think they should put other elements in green lanter 2 like red, blue, pink and purple lanterns like in the animated series that would be so awsume, more action scenes would make the movie better can’t wait till its out

  7. Loved green lantern!! Dont want a reboot just pick up where you left off and make his friend who put the fear ring on the villian for justice leagur. leave ryan reynoldd as green lantern he was perfect

  8. I think a darker green latern would be good, but prefer if they keep Ryan Reynolds as the green latern

  9. I agree the 1st green latern movie wasn’t bad. I enjoyed it. I would agree with some of the comments with creating green latern 2 and making it better but keeping the same actor. Ryan is a great fit for GL. Can’t wait to see the new GL movie.

  10. Green Lantern was ok, but it gave enough to have an epic sequel. Do not make a reboot, make this sequel amazing

  12. I am seriously all for a sequel rather than a reboot of Green Lantern! It should introduce maybe John,Kyle, and Guy since they’re human so more relatable. Also Sinestro Corps will be the main focus hopefully but I am during to see Star Sapphire take a crack a Hal on the big screen she’s awesome. Also the whole production team for the first one should be fired and then sentenced to eternity in the Phantom Zone. You can’t ever use that much horrible CGI in a movie.

  14. We need another green lantern the first one was great i remember audience members standing and cheering in the end visually, and character wise it was awsome the story wasnt all that great. I would suggest picking more green lantern characters and a villian more relatable Star saphire, and a few more villens from the justice league’s future gosh their are so many possible storylines
so if your asking the fans do we want another Green Lantern movie id say hands down its a yes…

  15. Hello, I loved Green Lantern and like others have seen it over and over. I want to keep the same cast.
    sincerely,
    Cliff

  16. i personality hated the CGI customs liked the story but would perfer real customs its was fine for a couple characters but Hal body was to small for his head i mean look at hulk he was all CGI and looked great if you are going to use that much CGI DO IT WELL AND MAKE IT LOOK GOOD

  17. I truly feel that the only way green lantern could blow minds as a dark edgier film is to follow John Stewart… A black man out the marines.. A mean ass kickin jarhead… Micheal jai white would be perfect.. His martial arts back round would give the movie the action it needs, his natural intimidating look and attitude… Did we not witness a dark version of him in spawn?? …I know it would be great. That dark edge he had with spawn mix with a marines mind and now he’s a hero.. With a attitude problem

  18. This one should focus on guy getting hurt and john getting the ring Hal not liking john as a gl because of his attitude..and constantly bring up his past.. Them fight and John proving himself.. Let his life experiences take a part… And since he’s a architect let him created some really cool s***

  20. I thought Ryan Rynolds and his girlfriend were absolutely perfect for the part. I think he delivered the character better than anyone I myself could imagine. Everything they need for a phenomenal hero movie franchise is there but the people dreaming and writing the story need to be into it just as much as I believe Ryan was into his character. Honesty if they tried to just do,a reboot i don’t think I’d even bother seeing it. Just like a hero, take your hit when you deserve them but learn and come back stronger for it. Ps, if anyone making this movie just happens to be looking here for ideas, i think it would be kinda cool to see Hal battling off parallax’s influence and touch on the spirit of vengeance. Just sayin. Battles with the inner self are something that any audience can relate to.

  21. Am up for either a reboot or a sequel as long as they get the right team involved who will have the right idea fir the direction of the movie! But I’d most prob be happy with a Sequel. I thought Ryan done a great job as Hal Jordan and I really enjoyed the movie. I think tho for the next one to be a success then it should go darker and get Sinestro more involved in it even as the yellow lantern!

  22. there were plenty of little problems like it being a bit to cartoony, emotional spectrum crap, and the fact that they wasted their money on a fish trying to tell a story but those might have been overlooked if they didnt forget about the thing that makes green lantern awesome and popular… his versatility they didnt show enough fighting which made the movie boring. also i dont care about the corps it should be about hal becoming a solo hero and keeping peace in his sector, that will definetly save money cause they wont have to show the weird aliens.

  23. Michael Jai White is not a good actor, if you picked him you would make a terrible mistake… keep Ryan Reynolds make a sequel, not a reboot and make it dark and edgy, especially the fight scenes.

I really liked this green lantern film despite all of the bad reviews, which in all honesty I don’t think are well founded. But please please don’t make this another Spiderman fiasco, no one wants to see a reboot, carry on where you left off.

    • I totally agree. If the movies aren’t really old then there’s no point in making reboots.

  24. I think the first Green Lantern movie should have been a little less nerdy and more ballsy. If and when you do the sequel; please stick to the character not his surrounding enterauge.

  25. Look I’m a huge Lantern fan, always have been. They need to start from scratch though they RUINED the first one. Everything was completely out of order and wrong. They can keep RR as the Lantern but maybe take a shot and read the lantern history and not the cliffnotes. Look no offense but some of you telling how it should be don’t know the other lantern corps names or why they exist. I doubt that some of you can even point out the errors from the movie.I see so much effort put into the Batman and superman flicks while my childhood idol was trashed. PLEASE let us have another GL flick but done properly!

  26. Go for the epic sequel. The audience will be anxious for the next green lantern when it is made public. Obviously include Sinestro corps, and put a large amount of focus on the properties of the lanterns. Affiliate much fear and horrid images with Sinestro corps. The dark, edgy point of the film can be demonstrated through the yellow lanterns. Also, show the power of will, bravery, and courage amongst the green lanterns. Reynolds fits well as Hal Jordan.

  27. I am up for a sequel. Maybe they could have John and Hal gets to be in the Flash movie since in the comics him and the Flash are friends.

  28. I think an edgier Green Lantern 2 is just what needs to be done. I thought the first Green Lantern was cool, but compared to Dark Knight, Man of Steel, and Spider-Man 2 I can see that there’s room for improvement.
I’m not a movie producer or director, but I watch the ratings every week and even I can see what sells movie tickets.

  29. Try to bring out John Stewart but don’t forget Hal Jordan make when Hal’s teaching John how to use the ring and during when John Stewart has to protect the senator and the mission is successful and the cyborg Superman destroys Coast city and Hal and John come defeat the Cyborg Superman and Hal Jordan go’s to the Guridans and ask can he rebuild his city they said no ..So he went insane killing most of the green lauterns and John Stewart comes tryna to stop Hal jordan but ends up fighting Hal Nd defeating him so Hal Jordan flys off ring then loses powers in space he Suffocates in space and John Stewart becomes protector of 2814
