A movie we’ve not heard about for a very long time is breathing some life again. Super Max, the DC comics-based film which would center around the character of Green Arrow stuck in a prison made for supervillains for a crime he did not commit, is still a work in progress with a new writer about to come aboard to help on the screenplay.

Over two years ago now, David Goyer described his unique superhero movie idea titled Super Max by saying the following:
“It’s like ‘Alcatraz,’ and he has to team up with, in some cases, some of the very same villains he is responsible for incarcerating in order to get out and clear his name. Of course, tons of people try to kill him while he’s in there. We’ve populated the prison with all sorts of B and C villains from the DC Universe. For the fans, there will be all sorts of characters the hardcore comic book junkies will know, but they’re all going to be there under their human names and no one is wearing a costume, but there will be a lot of characters with powers and things like that.”
Screen Rant master Vic made the point that the movie may be a tough sell since the Green Arrow is not known amongst mainstream moviegoers nor will the B and C-level villains be. On top of that, it would be difficult for the audience to gain an interest in the superhero character who would be without his costume and weapons that help make him the character he is. It would just turn into an action movie of sorts that combines the television shows Prison Break and Heroes.
Unfortunately, other than some positive buzz about a draft of the script, there have literally been no updates on this project for over a year. Breaking that silence, David Goyer spoke with MTV briefly about Super Max and it’s current status.
“We’re working on that. We’re about to bring on another writer… Obviously, Warner Bros. is now heavily into mining all of the various DC properties.”
It’s great timing for Warner Brothers to be getting to work on this film with the many recent confirmations on their Green Lantern movie, and speculation surrounding other projects including The Flash, a reboot of the Superman franchise and Batman 3.
Their big competitor, Marvel Studios, is presenting all of their biggest characters (that they own the film rights) to and to compete against them, DC will need to showcase more of their superhero lineup.
However, with the other big budget DC films in development, they could do some work to tie them in together, at least partially. We’ve heard speculation for a while now that the Green Lantern film would feature a cameo by the new Clark Kent – which is very plausible now since the Superman reboot is being fast-tracked.

It’d be cool and good for the fans and marketing to have another hero from one of those films appear in Super Max, perhaps at the end after he breaks free… or even helping to break him out?
It’s such a shame that Heath Ledger passed away – A cameo by him in prison here would be beyond epic and that by itself could have been the key selling point of the movie.
So, it sounds like people are still at work on Super Max and Goyer can only say that “It’s definitely something we’re developing.” With his new show, Flash Forward, on its way and his full plate of upcoming projects (including X-Men Origins: Magneto), he’ll be a busy man. We don’t have a timetable yet on Super Max, but it could be a while.

I still think the idea for the Super Max movie is one of the best I’ve heard. Frankly, I don’t care if it’s Green Lantern or some other hero, but the idea of a persistent do-gooder being thrown behind bars with the super-powered thugs he put in there is a compelling (if not altogether original) one…
I would like it to get made… the more DC comics hero movies we get the closer we are to a Justice League movie and that’s what I’ve wanted all along…
Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Lex Luthor in this prison and Superman making a cameo…
there probably wouldn’t have been a cameo for the joker or any other batman villains because remember they dont go to prison they go to an insane asylum.

Agree with rico. It would have seemed too forced if Joker had been in this movie, anyway.
I still like the concept, I just wish they’d kinda call it something other than Super Max.
It would be cool if bruce wayne helped him break out by giving him a gadget or hint of some sort if he goes to like visit him or something because he’s not convinced that green arrow committed the crime he was charged with.
The good guy behind bars with the people he put there is not an original concept as many comic books have had the hero behind bars with he people he put there at one point or another batman, rorshach, etc… Im jsut interested in learning more about the Green Arrow.

yeah they also did it in “Tango & Cash”… lol even though they’re not superheroes… they were heroes nonetheless.
maybe to solve the problem of no1 knowing enough about the green arrow, why not use the same actor who plays him in smallville? that way you have the smallwille fan base to fall on?
The SuperMax concept has been done before, don’t get me wrong I’ll go see it regardless, GA is one of my favorite heroes.
They should have the twist, that when he’s in jail they tag him to be in the Suicide Squad. A whole diffrent story line can be craved out of that idea.

who is your pick for the Oliver Queen/Green Arrow role? I can keep envisioning Matthew Mcconaughey from Reign of Fire, or as someone on the Screen Rant boards said Matt Damon. Jason Bourne as Green Arrow, ‘Nuf said.
Let me fill everyone in on a few details. Just to let you knowm I’ve read the script and it is, indeed very good. Something different. Along with the Green Lantern, Jonah Hex and Dark Knights, it’s once the best comic book adaptation scripts i’ve feel privileged to have read. The Thor one’s good too, but not in the same league as the above. And just to throw a few things you’re way, He does appear for longer than ten minutes as The Green Arrow, and includes flashes scenes of how he became the Green Arrow, and how being stuk on the island changed his life. and either as charater cameos or referrances, Lex Luther, The Joker and The Riddler feature. Although I am puzzled as to why Joker and Riddler would be there and not Arkham?
