  2. I agree with Rob about 24 last episodes being great, those episodes feature pure Jack Bauer badassery.

    • Hells ya!

      • If we are bring back old TV shows lets bring back the Highlander tv show!!! Adrian Paul FTW!!!

      • If we are bringing back old TV shows lets bring back the Highlander tv show!!! Adrian Paul FTW!!!

        • I’d watch that!

  3. Ugh, Battleship again?! But yeah, Marvel. I hate accepting the reality that money is the driving force behind what these movies are but like Rob said, thats hollywood. It’ll be weird seeing a non RDJ Tony Stark but hey, me personally, I hated the idea of rebooting Spider-Man and ASM turned out to be my second favorite Spider-Man movie and I love Andrew Garfield. I hated the idea of replacing Edward Norton but now I love Mark Ruffalo. I think Iron Man can live without RDJ. Don’t know for how long but it can.

    10.The Big Wedding

    • It’s true but I don’t think we’ll have to worry about seeing a new Tony Stark until after The Avengers 3.

  4. Eccleston was my favorite doctor out of the recent 4 doctors, with The Empty Child/The Doctor dances being my favorite of the new series.

    • The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances is listed in our Doctor Who guide on the site as one of our favorite episode(s). Definitely one of the best in the modern series.

  5. Anthony. Let me help you out with Gatsby. I’m a Fitzgerald fanatic. I have not seen the movie.

This entire novel came about from a conversation between Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. At the time Hemingway was already a big hit in literature circles for his writing. Fitzgerald on the other hand took longer to gain any celebrity. Hemingway had been invited to some rich peoples houses to hang out. Hemingway’s reaction later, which he shared with Fitzgerald in a private conversation, was, “Hey, the rich are just like us!”

Fitzgerald adamantly disagreed. And he wrote The Great Gatsby to demonstrate this fact. The rich are NOT like us. They are differently motivated than regular people. Much of their actions and reactions are mysterious to the rest of us. jay Gatsby fell in love with Daisy. He was lower class she was old money. He got rich and tried to fit in with that world…… He had the money…. But he was a total stranger in a strange land and all the rest of the rich knew it. He didn’t fit in with them and never would. Even though he had the money…. they still looked down on him. This includes Daisy in the end. She was raised in this cold, self centered world of the super rich. She didn’t stand up and admit to running down that woman because it would have inconvenienced her. Simple as that.

    • I thank you!

Kofi and Ben helped talk me down after the podcast was over.

      • It’s not spelled out in the book very well either, but Fitzgerald hated the rich. He thought they were a**holes. Notice how none of these rich jerks came to Jay Gatsby’s funeral at the end? They were more than happy to come to his parties and drink his booze….. right? Paying respects to Gatsby? No way.

Another Fitzgerald factoid or two might help you…… His upbringing:

Fitzgerald’s mother was old money rich. Or at least she was. Mary was born in a very wealthy family but she was an ugly, awkward child. She grew up and didn’t have many prospects for marriage among the upper class. She fell in love with a low born man…. Edward Fitzgerald. Edward was some kind of a failed salesman or something, and Mary’s family didn’t like him and didn’t want Mary to wed him. So when she did anyway they cut her off. Since Edward didn’t make much money and Mary was used to an upper class lifestyle, she had to go begging on a regular basis to her rich parents and family. They begrudgingly gave her a little money once in a while, but they were not very nice to her or especially to Edward Fitzgerald. All this bowing and scraping and ring kissing affected young F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Later on F. Scott Fitzgerald fell in love and married Zelda from a super rich family. The whole thing started all over again. Zelda’s wealthy family treated him like s***. Looked down their noses at him…. etc. They were actually lucky that he did marry Zelda. She was a crazy b**** and anybody would have to be totally in love with her to put up with her “episodes.” Fitz really did love her……. but she drove him to drink.

  6. 1 – Star Trek
    2 – Iron Man 3
    3 – The Great Gatsby
    4 – Pain & Gain
    5 – 42
    10 – The Big Wedding

  7. Regarding the Marvel issue, THIS IS A RUMOR, NOTHING MORE. They need to lock up RDJ for Avengers 2 and 3, and then recast him. And I didn’t like how you guys were sympathizing with these millionaires; they’re millionaires, i don’t care if they have to do promo for 6 months, they can live comfortably without having to worry about anything.

    • I don’t think it’s out of line to sympathize with their schedules. That said, I’d make the opposite argument, they shouldn’t be making that much money in the first place. Salaries really are inflated in Hollywood, I understand why but that’s the part that bothers me the most. Think of all the other people that help make movies what they are – and hope much they make by comparison, it’s kind of crazy.

  8. I’m not excited for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at all, I mean it doesnt have any buzz but it is after all over a year away and the cast isn’t exactly stellar, the Director is Meh, & the writers have interesting credits(Ghost Protocol, Alias, Life on Mars) but maybe with some good concept art & a sleek trailer it might peak my interest.

I guess the thing Ben said about it being more Grey then Black & White makes the most sense. It can’t be hey I ‘ll work for whatever you want to pay me or lets pay these guys whatever they want, there has to be a middle ground for everyone to meet at. RDJ has to want to do all these sequels at a reasonable price or the actual product might not be that great & it works both ways for someone like Hemsworth, he doesn’t get paid much for Thor & Avengers but he doesn’t get Snow White & the Huntsman or he doesn’t get to work with Michael Mann or Ron Howard without the exposure of being Thor. My hope is that at least until Avengers 3 they keep most of these actors especially RDJ because he’s become Tony Stark & Chris Hemsworth because he is pretty great Thor.

Are you going to do a recap of the TVNetwork Upfronts I fell like Mr. Anthony Ocasio will be pushing for this?

    • Anthony definitely mentioned the TV upfronts. If we don’t do an all-Star Trek special edition next week, we’ll do upfronts during Rants and Raves.

      • I figured you might do a special edition podcast for Star Trek but I thought Anthony might be banging that drum to get some TV love on the podcast.

        • I’m banging the drum! I’m also ready to put myself out there and reveal my predictions (read: future facts) on which shows will be canceled.

          • I know your a TV guy so I will look for it but I’m always wary about watching new shows until I know it will be successful because getting into a show that will be cancelled kind of sucks also your boy Karl Urban’s show looks interesting but it’s on FOX so who knows.

  9. 1. Star Trek into darkness
    2. Iron man 3
    3. The Great Gatsby
    4. Peeples
    5. Pain and gain
    10. Big Wedding

I just hope that if and when they bring back ” 24″ its not episodic, that its more like a Mini Series one here and there…

    • Sounds like it’s a one-shot thing, though if it does well it’d be hard to imagine they wouldn’t want to do more.

I recently started listening to the podcast and now I am obsessed. I have listened to a bunch of episodes in the last couple of weeks. Anthony Ocasio is my favorite but everyone does a great job. I really enjoyed Amy Nicholson on the show. Please have her back soon!

    • Thanks for listening! Glad you’re enjoying the show. We’ll have Amy back on again for sure.

  12. Thank you, Kofi, for giving mindless action movies like Battleship, Battle Los Angeles and Wrath of the Titans some support. Sure, they are far from being Oscar material, but they unapologetically succeed at what they set out to do and are also very far from justifying a jump on the “worst movie ever” band wagon.

    • Hey now! I was the one defending Battle Los Angeles and Wrath of the Titans!

Kofi can have Battleship though ;)

      • True. Credit where credit is due!

  13. MCU have to realize that they can’t treat people in Hollywood like they do in comicbook industry.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how it plays-out. I can see there being some blowback for sure but, for now, they’re getting away with it. Plenty of big name talent signed up for Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy. That said, the proof will come when they actually do recast a key member – and have to see if people will still turn out for an Iron Man movie without RDJ.

  14. #1 Star Trek Into Darkness
    #2 Iron Man 3
    #3 The Great Gatsby
