No force could hold back this weekend's number 1 film, which set a new October box office record.

Opening at number 1 is Gravity (read our review) with a massive $55.6 million. Alfonso Cuaron's space thriller had strong word of mouth heading into the weekend, and is now in control of the best October opening ever.

Not only is Gravity a new October record holder, it also captured the largest 3D market share ever, ahead of James Cameron's Avatar. Granted, there are far more 3D theaters available now than there were back in 2009, but clearly audiences were willing to pay a little extra for this one-of-a-kind movie-going experience.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is the number 2 film with a strong second weekend total of $21.5 million. Sony's animated sequel is doing extremely well and has grossed $60 million thus far. Unfortunately, Cloudy 2 is at almost the exact total as its predecessor was after two weeks, despite a much better opening weekend.

In at number 3 is Runner Runner (read our review) with $7.6 million. Neither Ben Affleck nor Justin Timberlake could save this fairly generic thriller, which posted one of the worst tallies for a 3,000+ theater release. Luckily for Mr. Affleck, he has a little movie called Batman vs. Superman on the horizon, which should do wonders for his box office street cred. Runner Runner, on the other hand, will likely be forgotten by next weekend.

Prisoners is the number 4 film this weekend with $5.7 million. The Hugh Jackman drama/thriller has now eclipsed its $46 million budget with $47 million total.

Rounding out the top 5 is Rush with $4.4 million. Although the film jumped into the top 3 after going wide, it hasn't hit the types of numbers Universal was presumably expecting. Rush might make back its $38 million budget, but not much more than that if it does.

The number 6 film, Don Jon, fell 52% in its second weekend and earned $4.16 million. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut did well in its opening weekend, but seems to have tapered off since then. The film is up to $16 million total.

The number 7 film this weekend is Baggage Claim with $4.12 million. Like Don Jon, the romantic comedy dropped over 50% and is now up to $15.2 million.

In at number 8 is Insidious Chapter 2 with $3.8 million, which brings its domestic total up to $74 million. Not bad for a film that only cost $5 million to make.

The romantic comedy Pulling Strings comes in at number 9 with $2.5 million on only 387 screens. Pulling Strings is the second 2013 film released under Lionsgate's Pantelion label, which caters to Latin American moviegoers.

The other Pantelion film released this year, Instructions Not Included, went on to become the highest grossing Spanish language film in the US. While Pulling Strings won't hit that high benchmark, the film did have the second best per-screen-average of the weekend, behind Gravity.

The indie comedy Enough Said jumped up to the number 10 spot with $2.1 million. James Gandolfini's final film has been receiving mostly favorable reviews and has grossed $5 million after three weeks.

Outside the top 10: Parkland (read our review) made $335,000 on 357 screens for an average of $1,304/screen.
