While Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne might technically be the protagonists of Gotham, the prequel series to Batman is just as much about the various villains. For every story showing how Bruce becomes Batman or how Jim climbs the ranks of the G.C.P.D. to become commissioner, there is another one showing how Oswald Cobblepot, Selina Kyle, and Edward Nygma turn into the Penguin, Catwoman, and the Riddler, respectively. And if you've been watching from the start, you'll recall that season 2 made strong use of the subtitle Rise of the Villains, because the show had becomes as much their story as the heroes'.

So far, season 3 has continued that balance of good guys and bad, with the subtitle Mad City. Certainly with the crazy amount of villains and police department full of corruption and killers, things in Gotham are quite mad. And according to a new trailer, it's not calming down in the near future.

In the newly released trailer, actors David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), Morena Baccarin (Leslie Thompkins), and Cory Michael Smith (Edward Nygma) talk a bit about what audiences can expect in the next 3 episodes. Mazouz promises "absolute mayhem," Baccarin is at a loss for words, and "total anarchy" is Smith's claim. The footage shown in the trailer moves fast, but among other things it features the returning Jerome, played by Cameron Monaghan, who may or may not be moving into complete Joker territory.

Mazouz also drops several specific teases for various characters. It sounds like the audience can expect the bad blood between Nygma and Cobblepot to escalate. Meanwhile, Selina's Mom is coming back into her life, and Gordon plans to take down a "crazy being." And of course, all of that pales in comparison to Jerome's return from the dead. The recently resurrected character even adds on to his earlier promise by assuring the audience there will be "absolute chaos and darkness."

And these are only some of the characters, meaning there is also going to be various stories, events, and involvement in these stories with Harvey, Barbara, Alfred, Ivy, Nathaniel, Tabitha, Lucius... there is never a shortage of people in trouble or causing trouble in Gotham City.

After these three episodes, Gotham will take a second, long hiatus while 24: Legacy airs its entire season. So there is a lot of story that needs telling in these three hours. After they air, there will be no new episodes until April 24, a break of nearly three months.

The first of these three episodes of Gotham, titled 'Ghosts' airs on FOX, Monday, January 16 @8pm.
