The first season of Fox’s Gotham introduced viewers to multiple DC Comics villains, including Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) and Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor). The show’s second season has been teased as “The Rise of the Villains” and will see multiple baddies from season 1 team up under the direction of new characters Theo and Tabitha Galavan, played by James Frain and Jessica Lucas.
When Season 2 kicks off, Oswald will be the reigning King of Gotham following the exits of powerful players Carmine Falcone, Sal Maroni and Fish Mooney. However with change in the air, it remains to be seen if the Penguin can hold onto his power. Now, Taylor speaks about how the Galavans will upset the dynamic in Gotham.
In an interview with CBR, Taylor talked about Oswald’s talent for manipulating the players around Gotham, but adds that in Season 2 he will be confronted by events that he did not prepare for and that he may not be able to control. Of course, the new pieces on the board in Season 2 will be the Galavans, but when asked about how Oswald will interact with the siblings, Taylor remained vague:
“I can’t really get into specifics, but what I can say is – and it’s not just Oswald – Theo and Tabitha disrupt the entire power structure in Gotham. They make a big move in Season 2 that throws everyone off. They are very reminiscent of what Oswald did in the first season. It’s almost like Oswald is getting a taste of his own medicine. Someone comes in with an agenda that no one was expecting to see, and it just throws everyone off balance.”
Speaking to Oswald’s relationships established in Season 1, Taylor reiterated that his friendship with Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) is on the out, but the two will still maintain a working relationship. As for the unlikely camaraderie between Oswald and Nygma, Taylor teased that their relationship “grows” and “deepens” outside of the G.C.P.D. – though they remain adversarial.
Looking to the future for Oswald, Taylor said that he didn’t know if his character would ever interact with Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), but that “it’s only a matter of time before all these worlds come together.” As for the Penguin’s iconic weapon, Taylor was asked which incarnation of the villain’s umbrella he’d like to see in the series:
“This is where I don’t know if it was strictly a Tim Burton thing or if this was in the comics, but a helicopter umbrella, all the way. That’s so fantastic and so amazing and something necessarily for him because of his impediment. He also created so many enemies, so it would be a really amazing way to get around and not be as noticeable. You see Cobblepot walking down the street and you know exactly who it is because of his injury. For him to be able to use his tools to be able to work around that would be somewhat inspired and make a lot of sense for the character. Helicopter umbrella, all the way.”
Oswald’s umbrella first appeared in the series premiere of Gotham and throughout Season 1 – even receiving the honor of having an episode named after it – but fans have yet to see one of the comic character’s trick incarnations of the weapon. Whether that happens in Season 2 remains to be seen, but it seems Taylor would be just as excited to see the Penguin with a helicopter umbrella as fans of the character.
At this point, it seems Oswald’s position as the King of Gotham in Season 2 could be threatened by the Galavans, but their “big move” that Taylor refers to could mean many things. Perhaps it indicates their plan to unite the villains, as that will undoubtedly affect the city, or maybe it refers to one (or both) of the early deaths teased in the upcoming season.
No matter what the Galavans have planned, it will surely play into Gotham’s more serialized storyline in Season 2. The details of how Penguin will fit into that story, his relationships with Gordon and Nygma as well as whether or not fans will see a new incarnation of his umbrella remain to be seen when Season 2 premieres.
Gotham season 2 will premiere with “Damned If You Do” on Monday, September 21st on FOX.
