With Fox’s Gotham now two episodes under way, one criticism not being voiced by viewers is that the tale of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) really needs more villains to round out the cast. Nevertheless, a new trailer offering a tease of all the action set to arrive in the coming season is filled with cameos, confirming that it isn’t just the most famous Batman villains who will be making Gordon’s life more dangerous.
The trailer confirms that the struggle for power between Carmine Falcone (John Doman), Sal Maroni (David Zayas), and Fish Mooney (Jade Pinkett Smith) will be more than just a subtle subplot, and will help to charge the overall tension in Gotham City’s underworld. But it’s the more… eccentric characters that this war will bring out of the woodwork that even casual fans will be excited to see.
The most obvious example is Victor Zsasz, a lesser Batman villain who makes up for his lack of mainstream recognition with grotesque personality quirks. Seeing murder as a means of liberating the ignorant from their pointless lives – usually carried out on young women (look out, Barbara) – Zsasz marks his own body with a tally, although the lack of scarring shows this version of the killer is still in the early stages of his ‘mission.’
Along with Zsasz comes a number of brief glimpses of masked men, including (but not limited to) what appears to be a new take on Jonathan Crane a.k.a. Scarecrow. The greater emphasis on religious imagery may be a sign that the showrunners are looking to differentiate the show from Christopher Nolan’s recent films; both men appeared in the films, although Scarecrow marks a particular challenge, being the only villain to appear in all three.
It’s also worth pointing out that Jim Gordon may not even be safe from his own partner, Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue). Since Gotham‘s premiere showed that an uneasy partnership between the two cops could eventually form (read our review), it seems a stretch to think Bullock might actually attempt to remove Gordon from the picture. But with these new characters added to the comic book villains already confirmed, it’s hard to put anything outside the realm of possibility.
The wealth of criminals that the show’s writers have to draw on is no secret, and the producers have confirmed that Mr. Freeze, Hugo Strange and Harvey Dent will all appear in the show’s future. It’s not hard to see how both Strange and Dent could be brought into the story, as Arkham Asylum and its surrounding district are rejuvenated, and mob families are brought to blows. But if the writers plan to have Jim Gordon deal with some famous villains, the need for Bruce Wayne’s other half may become a harder sell.
Which characters or storylines in the coming season are you most intrigued by? Do you have concerns that this many villains so soon could be a problem, or do you say the more, the merrier?
