A new promo for the upcoming "Light the Wick" episode of Gotham has made its way online, teasing where the story will go next. Since returning from hiatus, the show has been very busy indeed. Edward Nygma has finally made his long-awaited, proper transformation into The Riddler - albeit not via the same route as his comic counterpart. Meanwhile, the Penguin and Poison Ivy are gradually building a dangerous partnership and Bruce Wayne is in the custody of the Shaman, a man who seems determined to turn the young boy into some kind of martial-arts wielding vigilante. As if that'll ever happen.

Furthermore, the Court of Owls arc is quickly coming to prominence thanks to the recent reveal that Jim's own father and his Uncle Frank were both members of the mysterious group. With knowledge that the Court plan on unleashing a devastating weapon upon Gotham City in order to destroy it and start afresh, Jim plans on heeding his Uncle's wishes and becoming a member of the Court of Owls in order the destroy them from the inside.

And judging from a new promo from next episode "Light The Wick", as well as a brief synopsis, he's gradually getting closer to achieving that goal. The trailer sees Gordon demand membership to the inner Court from Kathryn and also features a brief scene showing the return of Hugo Strange. Additionally, Bruce's training appears to be intensifying as the Court and the Shaman endeavor to transform him into Gotham's protector.

Meanwhile, the synopsis reads:

Gordon discovers the weapon the Court of Owls will use to destroy Gotham, which leads him on a dangerous path as he tracks it down. Meanwhile, Kathryn (guest star Leslie Hendrix) and Temple Shaman (guest star Raymond J. Barry) reveal their next move to Bruce, and Ivy comes to Selina’s aid in the all-new “Heroes Rise: Light The Wick” episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, May 15 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-318) (TV-14 L, V)

The Court of Owls in Gotham

The clip doesn't give too much away that hasn't already been heavily hinted at in recent episodes, however the emergence of Professor Hugo Strange adds a considerable amount of fuel to the speculation that the 'weapon' the Court of Owls possess is in fact one of Strange's super-human creations from his days at Indian Hill. It should also perhaps be noted that the Court's master-plan is very similar to that of Ra's Al Ghul's in Batman Begins and it has already been announced that the League of Shadows leader will be making an appearance soon.

Although Gotham has a tendency to veer wildly from its comic source material, the show's third season has certainly seen an increase in the amount of recognizable Batman characters and elements. Aside from The Court of Owls and the Riddler, Poison Ivy is now much closer to her traditional incarnation (thanks to some Miracle-Gro) and the Indian Hill plot device has allowed many other figures such as Mr. Freeze and Azrael to make an appearance in some form or another.

This may, however, displease some fans who preferred Gotham's early days as what was essentially a Batman-tinged police procedural in some regards. Certainly, it feels as if the focus has shifted somewhat off of original main character James Gordon and is now more of ensemble piece with figures such as Bruce, the Penguin and The Riddler becoming more prominent over time.

Gotham continues May 15th with "Light The Wick" on Fox.
