Just as with season 2, Gotham season 3 has seen many changes take place in the titular city, with new villains and heroes emerging, new relationships being forged, and even more development along the road of teenage Bruce Wayne growing into Batman. One particular existing relationship also took on an unexpected dimension, with the Penguin developing romantic feelings toward long-time associate Edward Nygma. Unfortunately, Nygma didn't reciprocate, leading to some rather nasty results.

Sadly, despite how eventful Gotham season 3 has ended up being so far, the season's overall momentum was stopped in its tracks back in February, due to the premiere of 24: Legacy. Immediately following the 14th episode of season 3, Gotham went on an extended hiatus, one that will have lasted nearly three whole months by the time it resumes. Thankfully, that long wait is almost over, with Gotham set to make its mid-season return on Monday, April 24.

As the big spring premiere draws ever closer, FOX has released a batch of new stills for the episode, entitled 'How the Riddler Got His Name'. The network has also made available the official plot synopsis for the episode. Check them both out below:

"Nygma convinces himself that he doesn’t need Penguin to succeed and begins to introduce himself to Gotham as “The Riddler.” Bullock and Lucius Fox get caught up in Nygma’s mind games, while Gordon learns troubling news about his father’s death. Meanwhile, the Court of the Owls reveals its next move."

The first thing Gotham fans are likely to notice in the stills is that the Penguin is back in full effect already, despite his apparent murder at the end of the previous episode. While it's unlikely anyone actually thought there was a chance the character was really dead, he was both shot and then shoved into Gotham Bay by his former friend Ed, and one wonders just how he can possibly be in such a seemingly healthy state this soon. Penguin's suit appears to be wet -- with a little seaweed dangling from his shoulder -- so clearly there wasn't some kind of time jump that would explain his recovery.

As far as the future Caped Crusader goes, the stills make it seem like Bruce is getting himself into hot water out on the streets of Gotham once again, with his nose clearly having taken some damage in the second still he appears in. It also looks like eventual Batman confidant Lucius Fox has stumbled upon something he's not happy about atop a flight of stairs, judging by the expression on his face. Of course, in Gotham, there's no shortage of freaks and psychos that could be causing his concern.

Gotham season 3 returns on Monday, April 24.
