Gotham star Cameron Monaghan has expressed interesting in playing Carnage in Sony Pictures' upcoming Venom movie. About three years ago, the studio announced plans to expand Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man series into their own Spider-Man cinematic universe, featuring not only two more Amazing Spider-Man sequels but also several spinoffs, most of which would focus on Spidey's rogues' gallery.

Sony's first spinoff would center on the web slinger's perennial enemy, Venom, while another one would focus on the supervillain team, Sinister Six, first teased at the end of Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, people had presumed those plans had fallen through when the studio signed an agreement with Marvel Studios two years ago to share the iconic superhero, thereby allowing Spider-Man to appear within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In order to do that, they had to reboot the franchise, and that's how Tom Holland came to be the MCU's Spidey, making his highly-anticipated debut in Anthony and Joe Russo's Captain America: Civil War last year. It turns out, Sony Pictures has every intention of moving forward with its original plans, sans more Amazing Spider-Man sequels.

Holland's first standalone film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, releases soon, yet that hasn't deterred Sony from preparing for an upcoming Venom film, which will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and star Tom Hardy as the eponymous character (specifically, the Eddie Brock version). Furthermore, it has since been revealed that Carnage would be the villain in the film, and people are already throwing their hats into the ring to portray the character, such as Cameron Monaghan, as evidenced by the hashtag #CameronforCarnage that has been circling around online.

Monaghan achieved fame by playing Ian Gallagher on Showtime's award-winning comedy-drama series, Shameless -- but it wasn't until he started playing the character Jerome Valeska on FOX's Gotham that he proved his capability for portraying comic book villains. Audiences have assumed that his Gotham character was the Joker, though that hasn't yet been officially confirmed. However, if he were confirmed as the Joker, then he would have given one of the most convincing performances for the character, especially on the small screen -- and he could use that craziness for Carnage.

For those that don't know, Carnage is the symbiote that attaches to the character Cletus Kassady (just as the symbiote attaches to Brock and turns him into Venom), a convicted serial killer who once shared a cell with Eddie Brock on Ryker's Island, while serving his prison sentence for murdering 11 people. At this point, there's still much we don't know about the upcoming Venom film, aside from the major players involved. It's possible that the studio would be looking to an actor older than Monaghan for the role of Carnage, though if they're lenient on the age requirement, then Monaghan certainly fits the bill.
