Today, MTV shared exclusive teaser footage of The Goon, the animated feature-length adaptation of Eric Powell’s popular comic series. The footage from Blur Studios shows that the film, which has been coming together slowly over the last few years, is now much closer to completion.

Along with the teaser footage, MTV revealed that David Fincher, the producer of The Goon, and Paul Giamatti, who voices the character of Frankie, will be in attendance at this year’s 2010 San Diego Comic-Con to promote the film and premiere the rest of the footage.

For those unfamiliar with the comic series, The Goon is known for its unique combination of supernatural action and ironic self-referential dialogue, all delivered in a darkly comic, noir-inspired style. Check out the teaser footage below, along with more details about Fincher and Giamatti’s appearance at Comic-Con.

Previously, we wrote about how closely creator Eric Powell was working with David Fincher and Blur Studios to create this film, and it definitely shows in this 30-second teaser. The world of The Goon is one in which zombies, cannibalistic hobos, and mobsters cross paths daily, and Blur has done a nice job capturing that bizarre reality.

In watching the footage, however, I’m not completely sold on Giamatti’s voice-over work. I don’t think it’s bad, but Frankie definitely sounded different in my head when I read the comic. I also wonder why the footage seems to focus so much on Frankie and not The Goon himself. I suppose all of that will be answered at Comic-Con when the rest of the footage is shown.

Speaking of which, The Goon panel takes place on Friday at 6:00 PM PST in Room 24ABC. We listed it as one of our top Friday panel picks, but now that we know David Fincher and Paul Giamatti will definitely be there, it’s an even hotter ticket.

If you’re too busy to make it to The Goon panel, however, MTV promises to premiere the full footage immediately after the panel for everyone to see.
