wolverine secret endings The Good News First: Wolverine Will Have Multiple Secret Endings

We have some good news and bad news surrounding X-Men Origins: Wolverine – the movie set to kickoff the summer of 2009. The good news is that the movie will feature multiple secret “Easter egg” endings – meaning that when you see it, you may get to see something that others don’t. The bad news is that claims of additional footage to be featured in the theatrical version of the film compared to the leaked copy may not be entirely true.

If you’ve been following updates on the soon-to-open Wolverine-centric film (weren’t all the X-Men films Wolverine-centric?) or even just read the entertainment section of your favorite newspaper then you no doubt have already heard about the major leak of a complete early workprint of the Wolverine spinoff movie that made its way on the internet at the beginning of the month.

While there’s a debate as to whether or not the security breach will have a significant impact on the film’s box office numbers, the fact is, people who want to see it, still will. Fortunately for Fox, the workprint that made its way onto the home-computers of over a hundred thousand torrent users was nearly a month old at the time and missing a ton of special effects and incomplete edits as well as most of the score. In addition to that, Tom Rothman, chairman of Twentieth Century Fox, claimed that nearly 10 minutes of footage was missing from the leaked version.

Well, according to some reports, that may not be true.

I guess we could say this started when The Huffington Post figured out that film’s run-time for both the theatrical and leaked versions of the movie ran around the same 107 minute time frame. Are the numbers off? Was Rothman lying? Or did they just happen to edit out an entire ten minutes of footage and replace it with the same amount?

Later, a “source” of Ain’t It Cool News apparently had a chance to see the completed version of the movie and revealed that it was in fact, exactly the same as the workprint minus the obvious post-production work. If that’s true, Rothman was lying about the additional footage and probably saying that just to encourage folks who downloaded it to still see it (although, I’d imagine that most of those who did are hardcore fans and will see it anyway).

After all, Rothman and Hugh Jackman swore to not let the leak hurt the movie and said they’d do everything possible to ensure its success. That might explain the footage discrepancy – although I do not condone Rothman’s outright lying (if that is the case). It also explains why we’ve seen Jackman popping up all over the world doing press events and appearances. Jackman’s certainly a hard-working guy and he put his heart and soul into this project from the beginning. Much respect to you, big guy – I hope this movie is good and turns out to be a box-office success.

Moving on to the good news, Alex at First Showing had a chance to see the film on the Fox lot in L.A. where director Gavin Hood spoke a little bit about the film and the differences between it and the leaked copy. Alex was quick to point out that Gavin did not mention any differences in footage but he did talk about the film having different prints with different secret endings. How many endings? They didn’t say other than it’s at least two (I sure hope it’s more than two, otherwise that’s a little disappointing). These secret endings show up after the credits start to roll (a la Nick Fury in Iron Man) and have no effect on what you see in the actual film.

That means, what you see at the end may differ from what I see. It’s a pretty interesting marketing strategy and it’ll be sure to get folks talking about it upon release. I’m a little disappointed that I won’t get to see it all when paying my $10 for a ticket but since it’s an after-credit bonus, I can’t really complain. In his screening, Alex got to see a 30-second clip that involved Deadpool.

The worst part about the leak for me, and I’m sure many other fans out there, is seeing all the rampant spoilers all over the web, most of the time with no warning. I don’t want to see the crap version and I’ve been waiting quite some time for this film to hit the big screen. If you have seen the workprint, keep it to yourself. Don’t be a jerk and ruin it for others.

A quick shout out to all the sites that have been covering Wolverine news. While not mentioned within my article, Peter at /Film has also been covering the movie step-by-step like us and some of his recent articles provided many sources which helped me in gathering information for this post.

What do you think of all this news and will you be seeing Wolverine in action this weekend like me?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine kicks off the summer season this Friday, May 1st and you know I’ll be there.

  1. I’ve been reading some official reviews for the film (I mean reviews from critics who actually saw the finished film) and they do are good reviews. Can’t wait to check out the film on May 1st and find out myself if Wolverine is a good movie for me too…

  2. You can see these reviews if you like on rotten tomatoes. Plus, some reviews already popp as we speak at hugh jackman-google news.

  3. no im gonna wait til dvd, but as far as the multiple endings are concerned it doesnt really matter, i mean yeah its supposed to get fans to go back and see the other endings, but they will most likely be up on youtube the very next day after the films is released.

  4. It’s a good idea but I planned on seeing it anyway for the rotf trailer.

  5. EVERYONE DIES!

Hope I didn’t ruin it for everyone. :D

No but seriously, I’m not a huge X-Men fan, I mostly love spider-man and batman while only liking the other superhero movies and since most of them coming out are good I usually go to see them. This movie looks way better than any of the other X-men movies that came out imo. Hope this movie is great and kicks off a kick-ass summer of movies.

  6. well the good news here in Puerto Rico is that the movie start on april 30.

  7. Without spoiling it,I did hear about another secret ending that involved someone other then deadpool.

  8. I know I’ll be pissed if I don’t get the Deadpool ending.

Or if the other ending is one of the two from the workprint. Then I’ll really feel like I wasted my money.

  9. I actually am kinda pissed about different endings, I wasn’t a jerkoff and didn’t steal the movie and now they want me to spend even more money to go around and watch it multiple times, I think not. I am gonna go watch the alternate endings online instead and I’ll buy it on blu and it better have everything on it.

  10. To be honest I downloaded it and still plan to go see it. Was interesting to watch with out the SFX in it. I hope when they say multiple endings it’s not the same as what was in the work print because it featured two after credit endings one in the middle of the credits and one at the very end. If they split those up and consider it something special it would be stupid. Though I do plan to just check out the ‘multiple’ endings on youtube I’ll only pay to see the film once as it wasn’t amazing or anything. it’s mostly what you would expect. Better than X3 not as good as X2.

  11. My review of the movis is here:

    http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/thegeekfiles/2009/04/wolverine-review.html

Please note it does contain some spoilers. I rated it seven out of 10.

  12. Soilent green turns out to be Bruce Willis on the planet that is really Earth with Rosebud really being his Father who was part of an alien conspiracy, all of this being a dream Wolverine had when he got knocked out by Sabretooth in X-Men 1!

  13. @English Gavz, come on man, wtf!?!?! Couldnt you put a spoiler warning???? lol :)

  14. Would have been interesting if they had gone with non-secret multiple endings. Coulda attributed it to Wolvie’s memory implants and such.

  15. well i intend on see’in the film
me and sum friends are going in costume.
gotta go dust off the old Bo Staff.

but my main reasons for seeing this film are:

1.my favorite character is finally being brought to Fruition.

    2.its an X-men movie
(unlike X3, which i consider that a crappy action flick that contains Marvel characters that are WAY out of context.)

3.to see sum Wolverine VS sabretooth that dosent end with someone getting thrown off of a national Land Mark.

    also
even though Gambit and Deadpool and the majority of the other Characters are not true to the comics *(obviously)*
it still pisses me off but at least there here in actuality.

  16. @ Brodie Bruce,

Gambit’s my fav. too, send us pics of you and your friends in costume!

  17. So, Rob, this “multiple ending” thing takes place after the credits? If so then, there is an ending to the film which is the same, so this is just additional footage right? It technically is not an ending.

This sounds more like a PS when you finish off an e-mail to someone.

  18. Thank you SK-47 from now on just for fun I’m gonna be finishing any forward I ever send will have 4 emails all with a different PS.

  19. I can’t WAIT to see this movie. My buddies are going to the midnight showing on Thursday night, but unfortunately I have to work in the morning so it will be Friday night viewing for me. I already have designated $100 for May movie viewing. LOL.

  20. Daniel F, no problem man, glad to help you out.

PS, nobody likes a smart ass.

  21. Daniel F, no problem man, glad to help you out.

    PS, whats the problem dude?

  22. Daniel F, no problem man, glad to help you out.

PS, you’re right, this is fun.

  23. Daniel F, no problem man, glad to help you out.

    PS, ScreenRant, sorry, last one.

  24. Please don’t spam on here. It’s just a little annoying.

  25. “Please don’t spam on here. It’s just a little annoying.”

Not if it’s fried the correct way.

  26. i will go see it at the theater no matter what

i wouldnt want to have another Iron Man Fiasco, when the BLU RAY version is not the exact copy as the theater version due to some drama

  27. lol SK-47.

Yes, from what I understand, they’re simply 30-second “easter egg” endings that take place AFTER the credits – in the same fashion as the bonus ending scene with Sam L as Nick Fury after the Iron Man credits.

So, it’s not the ending of the theatrical film, its a bonus scene that hints at where more spinoffs or sequels may go.

I know of two different scenes, not sure how many more there are (if there are any more).

  28. I knew you would enjoy it SK-47. It’s fun I already started it with a few emails to some friends. I sent four people the same email with a different PS I’ll be the only one who actually gets the joke, but I love to entertain my self.

Oh and umm everyone loves a smart ass and I was actually being serious.

  29. Great write up Rob!
