Inside Out has become the latest critical/commercial smash success for Pixar, but 2015 isn’t over for the animation powerhouse yet. The studio also has The Good Dinosaur opening in theaters in Fall 2015, with Peter Sohn (the Pixar short “Partly Cloudy”) making his feature-length directorial debut with the movie. Sohn’s take on the project could be something quite special too, if the newly-released full-length Good Dinosaur trailer is any indication.
Good Dinosaur takes place in an alternate version of Earth, where dinosaurs still roam the planet after the asteroid responsible for their extinction (in our reality, that is) misses our world. The story follows Arlo (voiced by Raymond Ochoa), a young Apatosaurus who ends up separated from his family and is forced to brave the perilous wilderness to reunite with them. On the way, though, Arlo picks up a companion in the human Spot (Jack Bright), and their first encounter can be glimpsed in the new Good Dinosaur trailer.
Good Dinosaur will boast loads of gorgeous and impressively photo-realistic animated natural scenery, judging by the latest trailer footage. It’s appropriate too, seeing as Sohn has described nature as being the “antagonist” in the film’s narrative, and in the latest theatrical preview (which is accompanied by the serene Of Monsters and Men tune “Crystals”) nature in the film does indeed come across as a fully-developed character – one that’s peaceful and inviting at times, then dark and life-threatening at other times. The atmosphere is captivating enough on its own that you might not even notice there’s but one word of dialogue included here.
The dinosaurs of Good Dinosaur boast a stylized look that recalls Pixar’s work on non-humans in the past. Indeed, some have speculated that in the movie’s universe, dinosaurs evolve from being more animalistic (before the asteroid fails to hit Earth) to more anthropomorphic – recalling how the humans change from live-action to cartoons in WALL·E. Such elements may’ve partly sprung from when Good Dinosaur went through a complete overhaul both artistically and in terms of personnel when Sohn took over as director from Bob Peterson (co-director of Up), and the final animated film result seems all the better for them, thus far.
Rounding out the Good Dinosaur voice cast are such names as Jeffrey Wright (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2), Frances McDormand (Olive Kitteridge), Sam Elliott (Justified), Anna Paquin (True Blood), and Steve Zahn (Dallas Buyers Club), in addition to the aforementioned leads, Raymond Ochoa and Jack Bright (who both provided additional voices for Pixar’s Monsters University).
The Good Dinosaur opens in U.S. theaters on November 25th, 2015.
