If you think failing to receive a gift on your wedding anniversary is bad, try spending some time walking in the shoes of Nick Dunne, the protagonist of David Fincher's upcoming thriller Gone Girl. Nick returns home on the occasion of his fifth anniversary to find that his wife, Amy Dunne, has gone missing and there are signs of a violent altercation in the house. Nicks helps lead the search for his missing wife, but his strange behavior and lies to the police soon have everyone questioning if he really cares for Amy, or if he's the reason that she's missing.

Gone Girl is based on the novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn, and it's fair to say that the story runs a whole lot deeper than just answering the question of whether or not Nick murdered Amy. The first teaser trailer for Gone Girl was an intriguing showcase of Fincher's directing talents that featured a cover of Elvis Costello's "She" by Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler, but didn't offer much in the way of plot details. Now a full trailer has been released, giving a better idea of the story at the heart of Gone Girl.

The trailer was teased yesterday with a new series of posters for Gone Girl, all featuring evidence bags containing clues that the police find during their search for Amy. Those who have read the book will have more insight into the significance of all of these items, but either way they're a pretty chilling accompaniment to the sentiment of "Happy Anniversary." The posters were originally released on IndieWire, Awards Daily, Huffington Post and HitFix, respectively.

"Gone Girl" is easily one of the best suspense thrillers published in recent years and it's very exciting to see the story in the hands of a talented filmmaker like Fincher. His most recent feature film prior to this was another crime thriller, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and while it's possible that he'll move on to a sequel after the release of Gone Girl, it's been a long time since we heard any news regarding The Girl Who Played With Fire.

Those who don't already know what happens in the story, what can you piece together from these clues and what was shown in the trailer? Did Nick Dunne kill his wife, or is there another culprit at large? For those of you who do know what happens, please remember to keep the comments spoiler-free.

Gone Girl will arrive in theaters on October 3, 2014.
