Fans of the original Japanaese production studio Toho Company are probably well aware of the forthcoming franchise feature Godzilla: Resurgence due out for distribution later this month. Standing as the first major release from Toho in the eponymous monster movie series in eleven years, the new movie should provide super fans of the original feature of 1954 (and its immediate thirty successors) with a brand new take on the classic kaiju made in its country of origin.
Coming on the heels of Gareth Edwards’ American reboot of the property from 2014, Godzilla: Resurgence may yet prove to be the another fully realized version of the eponymous monster fit to compete with Warner Bros. Pictures’ most recent reinvention of the same. Following the release of a full-length trailer for Godzilla: Resurgence, all eyes in the U.S. are looking for an official theatrical release date stateside – which has just now been officially announced.
Per an official announcement made at the Funimation panel at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, Funimation Films has acquired the distribution rights to Godzilla: Resurgence for American audiences. According to the distributer, Funimation will be in charges of making the film available theatrically, via video on demand, and by broadcast in North America, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The new movie is currently set for domestic release in late 2016.
Co-written and directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi (of the live-action Attack on Titan fame), Godzilla: Resurgence will no doubt be the source of significant attention when it finally makes its way stateside and presents the eponymous kaiju as he might wreak havoc on contemporary Japan. Speaking to acquiring the rights to bring the film to American audiences, Funimation CEO and President Gen Fukunaga stated:
“Shin Godzilla [Godzilla: Resurgence] represents a brand new chapter in the 62-year history of this iconic science-fiction monster. We’re excited to bring audiences this new vision of Godzilla from Toho as reimagined by directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi.”
Given Anno and Higuchi’s past work in bringing the fan-favorite anime Attack on Titan to life on the big screen, Godzilla: Resurgence should prove to be a more than surmountable task for the two filmmakers to accomplish. It’s been quite some time since audiences around the world saw a Godzilla movie produced by the likes of Toho, and with any luck their new movie will prove to be a welcome return to form for everyone involved.
Godzilla: Resurgence opens in Japan on July 29th, 2016, followed by a theatrical release in the U.S. in late 2016.
