Godzilla: Resurgence marks the release of the first film in the monster movie franchise produced by the original Japanese studio Toho Company in eleven years. Standing side by side with the U.S. franchise reboot by Warner Bros. Pictures, the Japanese kaiju spectacle has already seen theatrical release in its country of origin, and has been steadily building its own fan base internationally following the release of a feature length trailer and a few exclusive clips.

Co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi (who also directed the recent live-action Attack on Titan adaptation), Godzilla: Resurgence already appears to be a thrilling new interpretation of the classic franchise, and is already slated for domestic distribution by Funimation. After early reports of a U.S. theatrical release were debunked, however, many fans of the classic Toho property began to worry whether or not Anno and Higuchi’s latest would ever grace the big screen in North America. On that note, the latest word has it that Godzilla: Resurgence is still planning on making its way to American theaters in some shape or form this fall.

According to ComicBook.com, Funimation is currently seeking plans for a U.S. theatrical release of Godzilla: Resurgence to take place in October 2016. According to two separate leaks of planned theater locations slated to show the film domestically, it would appear that Funimation has something big planned for fans of the franchise, in keeping with such special movie screening events as those hosted most recently by Fathom Events for productions like Batman: The Killing Joke and Yoga Hosers.

With more definitive information still forthcoming, potential viewers of Godzilla: Resurgence in the U.S. can at the very least begin planning on seeing the new movie in theaters after being initially barred that option. Gareth Edwards’ 2014 American reboot of the franchise didn’t quite win over all Godzilla fans, and as such Anno and Higuchi are in a good position to offer something that Warner Bros. didn’t quite deliver.

It remains to be seen how capably the latest installment in the long running Toho monster movie franchise will fare when it finally greets American audiences, though by the looks of things Godzilla: Resurgence should prove to be a bold return to the series from the original Japanese studio that gave it birth. If the Warner Bros. reboot wasn’t quite your cup of tea, then the latest internationally produced Godzilla movie might be more to your liking.

Godzilla: Resurgence opens in Japan on July 29th, 2016, followed by a U.S. release in late 2016.
