The upcoming Godzilla sequel has gotten an official synopsis, with filming on the project now formally underway. The post-credits stinger at the end of this year's Kong: Skull Island promised that a trio of new monsters would be joining the MonsterVerse (as Legendary's Kong-Godzilla shared universe has been dubbed). With the addition of Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah, the MonsterVerse truly deserves the title.

Those three legendary kaiju will all be featured in the upcoming Godzilla 2 (sometimes known as Godzilla: King of the Monsters), and we now know which of the three will be Godzilla's biggest foe. This and other details have been officially revealed, along with the news that cameras have begun rolling on the newest installment in the MonsterVerse.

Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced the beginning of filming on Godzilla 2 (as they are calling it for the time-being), and has released an official synopsis that pegs King Ghidorah as the big baddie:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Godzilla 2 loses director Gareth Edwards

Michael Dougherty (Krampus) is directing the film from a script by himself and his frequent writing partner Zach Shields. In coming months, we should begin getting an idea about what Doughtery and his team are going for visually and tone-wise, if the film will be anything like Gareth Edwards' Godzilla (which used its main monster very sparingly) or Jordan Vogt-Roberts' action-heavy Skull Island.

With four monsters to play with, Dougherty should have plenty of opportunity to stage some epic battles. The film will likely also set up the next expected chapter in the MonsterVerse, 2020's Godzilla Vs. Kong, which will be tackled by Blair Witch director Adam Wingard. That the MonsterVerse is largely being handled by directors who are experienced at horror, is interesting in its own right.

Warner Bros. has also confirmed the full cast for Godzilla 2, which was already known to include Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Ken Watanabe (Transformers: The Last Knight), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Bradley Whitford (Get Out), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), O'Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Aisha Hinds (Star Trek: Into Darkness). Most of the filming will be done in Atlanta.
