Crouching Tiger’s Zhang Ziyi signs on to join Legendary and Warner Brothers’ Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The American monster film series, a reboot of the original movies produced by the Japanese production company Toho in 1954, first hit screens with director Gareth Edwards 2014 film Godzilla starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston. The latest take on the big-screen monster grossed over $529.1 million worldwide, becoming an international success.
The second film in the series Godzilla: King of the Monsters – which was originally supposed to be directed by Edwards but he left the project in 2016 order to finish his film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – is set to be released in March 2019 directed by Michael Dougherty and written by Dougherty and Zach Shields. The second Godzilla film has tapped a star-studded cast including break-out child star Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, King Kong), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel, The Conjuring), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing), Watanabe and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, The Imitation Game).
Now, the film has just added another star to its ranks with Chinese actress and model Zhang Ziyi, best known for her role in 2001’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as well as Rush Hour 2, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, 2046 and The Banquet. In 2005 she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama, the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in the film Memoirs of a Geisha.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be set several years after the events of the first film, when the giant lizard-monster killed the male MUTO monster by slamming him with his tail into the side of an office building and its female counterpart by firing his atomic breath down her throat, beheading her. Godzilla then used the last of his energy to return to the sea as he was hailed, “King of the Monsters – savior of our city?” This ending made the monster a more empathetic creature than in previous versions of the Godzilla property. We can also expect to see classic monsters like Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah make appearances in the next film as well.
After Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the next movie in the film franchise will be Godzilla vs. Kong, which will feature both Godzilla and the ape-monster King Kong, who made his debut in the 2017 film Kong: Skull Island.
