God of War Movie Script Rewrite God of War Movie Getting Re Write By Piranha 3DD Duo

A movie based on the popular video game franchise God of War has long been anticipated – but has never quite been able to gain the necessary traction to get off the ground. About three years ago there was a rumor that Brett Ratner was attached to the film, but that never really panned out into anything significant (and many fans of the games are likely thankful that it did not).

We now have word that Universal has tapped a pair of writers to revise the God of War script first turned in by David Self (presumably the same writer of Road to Perdition) – two writers whose track record are not likely to inspire a whole lot of confidence amongst the fanbase of the games. Scroll down for details.

Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are the writers THR reports are being handed the God of War  script revision duties. The pair’s prior work has mostly been in the horror genre, with credits that include the final four (convoluted) installments of the Saw franchise, the similarly-plotted horror flick,  The Collectornot to mention, the schlocky B-movie creature-feature sequel, Piranha 3DD. However, they are also credited with coming up with the spec script Monstropolis, which reportedly had influence on Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming monster movie epic, Pacific Rim.

But is a partial contribution to a (potentially) great action blockbuster enough to ignore the questionable overall impression of the duo’s track record? You be the judge.

God Of War is a video game epic set in ancient Greece, that basically takes Greek mythology stories about Zeus, Hades, Athena, Aires, Atlas, Olympus, and even the War between Gods and Titans, and refashions those myths around a character named Kratos. The merciless Spartan warrior returns from the dead as “The Ghost of Sparta,” wielding two mystical blades attached to chains and hungering for revenge against the gods – starting with Aires, the God of War. If that sounds a lot like the Clash of the Titans franchise, it’s because it is: Clash of the Titans (and its sequel, Wrath of the Titans) has been referred to by many a video game fan as a shoddy God of War knockoff.

With video game developer Ubisoft taking creative control of its video game properties’ development into feature films (starting with a Micahel Fassbender-starring Assassin’s Creed movie) there is now an intriguing experiment underway: Will a game developer be more successful than a veteran movie studio at bringing a popular video game franchise to the big screen?  Based on the personnel choices so far, we’d say Ubisoft is making better decisions.

We’ll keep you updated on the status of the God of War movie.

  1. A movie based on a video game, penned by the creative geniuses behind an exploitation flick so shameless it has a high-school locker room level boob joke right in the title?

How could that possibly go wrong?

More importantly, how’d Uwe Boll let this golden opportunity slip through his fingers?

  2. Oh God please no… Why, Piranha 3DD is a terrible movie. I don’t understand with film studios, why can they just hire the creators of the actual game to come up with a movie? it gives the fans nothing to moan about plus they don’t want the franchise to be hurt with a terrible movie so they would make the best script possible.
I think if GoW has less than 100m then its not gonna be good and even worse if it isn’t a 15 or 18 age rating. And they don’t like spending lots of money of things that aren’t family friendly.

  3. No no no

  4. Lol….this makes how much sense?!?

  5. Oh well, at least a new game is being released. God of War has been a great game series, but not everything needs to be made into a movie.

  6. Well, this isn’t good news :(
Still, I’m much more interested in that Assassin’s Creed movie…

  7. If this ever happens …DWAYNE JOHNSON …PERIOD !

    • agre completely

  8. Here’s an idea. Just play the game and write down the details in script form.

  9. A recipe for disaster. What in Piranha 3DD could they have seen that made them think these two were the perfect choice to pen their movie script?

    • @mongoose – Boobs? lol

    • I’m pretty sure it’s because it’s violent?

  10. ok that is stupid…first of all clash of the titans is not a knock-off of god of war…clash of the titans was a remake of its older version also called clash of the titans which was released in 1981 before god of war wzs even thought of

    • The remake has so many story elements too similar to God of War that is not in the Harryhausen’s original. To mention the most obvious: the main character’s anger against Gods, the black pegasus, the giant scorpion (black spider in GoW 3). Perhaps there are others, but that was on the top of my head when I saw the movie.

      • I mean giant spider in GoW 3. My bad.

  11. No, no……and no.

  12. The as yet still unmade Gears Of War movie would be a lot better than this could be.

Then again, this could potentially still be better than Wrath Of The Titans was. I actually fell asleep near the end of that movie and wasn’t mad at all because the story was lacking anyway.

  13. This has disaster written all over it, what can be worse adding 3-D of which they probably will EPIC FAIL!!!! It’s over before it even had a chance oh well moving on.

  14. I’m currently crying on the inside. To my everlasting shame, I have actually seen Piranha 3DD and what a waste. I really don’t hold out much hope for GoW now.

  15. Bah to you humbugs . .
This type of movie will come down to who directs it and how much money the studios will spend on it. How much script work would there be to a God of War movie anyways? It is all about the visuals and action.
I will hold out to hear who is directing before I start crying fail . . .

Vin Diesel, start bulking up . .

    • It’s going to be awful no matter what. It has so many strikes against, the biggest one being that Hollywood is making it. At best it will be mediocre garbage.

  16. Why cant they just let tge video game makers make the film. They understand the material better and have already made it successful. Obviously they know how to make action sequences amazing. It just doesnt make sense to let the people who wrote piranah anywhere near Kratos.

  17. Not only a shoddy God of War knockoff Kofi, they even LIFTED the character designs!!!
I saw Wrath recently, what the hell is this? It’s as if I was watching someone else play boss fights. Kronos, I already beat this guy in God of War 3 in a much better and satisfying fashion.

Lets just put the facts, this film IF it gets greenlit will not do the game justice. The games are a visceral experience. I still remember Jaffe’s quote of Greek Mythology with a Heavy Metal tone. The graphic nature will NEVER translate well on screen.
Also, God of War 1 is like playing an fantasy film anyways.

This, along with Uncharted goes under the category of “just leave it alone”. Don’t open your wallet, just pick up a controller.

  18. well time to add this movie to the long list of video game based movies that suck. I thought hollywood was trying to break crap streak… I guess not.

  19. The studio cannot blame us for being EXTREMELY skeptical about this one

  20. Ok, now this has got to be definitive proof that there is no god, or if there is, he hates us.

  21. then from the movie Ive seen of which they wrote the scripts to… THERE THE PERFECT WRITERS FOR THE SEX SCENES!

  22. How did Sony Computer give “ok” for this?!!

  23. This has fail written all over it. Awful writers and typical Hollywood thinking “We know it’ll be s*** but we’ll make some $$$ out of it anyway.” Sounds like the upcoming God of War: Ascension to be honest, just another easy cash grab.

I think Ubisoft are really going about video games-> movies the right way at the moment, and guess what? Hollywood can’t STAND it.

  24. Thanks for finally writing about >

  25. i think “Vin Diesel” or “Dwayne Johnson” are perfect choice for this ‘Kratos’ role.. .
As far concerning this movie well excluding piranha and SAW, this movie will be better than these thrilling movies because Ubisoft is taking control o of GOD OF WAR movie, and i’m pretty sure that they will not destroy this mmovie.

  26. vin diesel or Goldberg or batista will be suitable character for kratos….

    • definitely vin diesel

  27. “Clash of the Titans” and “Wrath of the Titans” had nothing to do with “God of War”. They told they story of Zeus’ (demigod) son Perseus, not Kratos. Any gamer and/or history buff would know that, people need to stop connecting the two when they have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

  28. Why the hell would they get this two knuckleheads to do a movie that has the potential of being a really good movie movie they done destroyed the Piranha franchise just saying.
