Fans of last season’s televised musical comedy series Glee are already anxiously anticipating tonight’s season 2 premiere. The show won over audiences with its stunningly talented leads, catchy reinterpretations of popular music, and the comedy stylings of Emmy-winner Jane Lynch. It has already attracted well-known guest stars including Olivia Newton John, Josh Groban, Neil Patrick Harris and Kristin Chenoweth.

This season promises to provide even greater spectacle and tempt a wider array of celebrity guest stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, who is in negotiations to appear on the show for two episodes in November.

Series creator Ryan Murphy reportedly wrote the role specifically for Gwyneth, a personal friend of his. She would play a substitute teacher who takes over Mr. Schuester’s Glee club duties while he is out sick. She will rock the show’s interpersonal dynamics, beguiling both the gleeks and Mr. Schuester with her charms. Her appearance will create tension between Mr. Shue and his on again, off again love interest, the hopelessly neurotic Emma. If the negotiations are successful the episodes will begin shooting in two weeks.

Gwyneth Paltrow sang with Huey Lewis in 2000’s Duets, directed by her father Bruce Paltrow. She is also sings in the upcoming movie Country Strong, which opens this December (see header image). Glee makes the most of its guest stars’ talents, and a role written specifically for a given actor tends to yield rich rewards; so this appearance has great potential for both the actress and the show.

Two of the performances that linger in the mind as the most entertaining and emotionally dynamic last season were those by Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel (though I did love NPH and Molly Shannon). Perhaps it was the caliber of their singing or the complexity of their storylines that made these two ladies the standouts.

The show is clearly upping the ante for this coming season. Another critically acclaimed actor who reportedly may do a Glee guest role is Javier Bardem. I look forward to seeing what the series brings to the table in this, its sophomore year.

Glee airs this Tuesday, September 21st, on Fox at 8PM ET/PT.
