An English-language remake of the dark Swedish thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – based on the worldwide best-selling novel – is evidently a hot property at the moment. The project has already snagged master director David Fincher and a script is already being worked on by Steven Zaillian (American Gangster, Schindler’s List).
As far as casting goes, there’s been a lot of interest in the lead female role of a neo-punk computer hacker who is hired by a journalist to investigate the case of a woman whose been missing for four decades. Actresses reportedly interested in that role include Carey Mulligan (although the producer recently debunked her involvement), Keira Knightley, Ellen Page and Natalie Portman.
However, what may be of more interest to you than the female role is who will play the male lead. Even though Brad Pitt is supposedly considering the role, both Deadline and The Wrap are reporting that James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, is now attached.
Deadline has it that there are talks going on between Craig and the filmmakers, whilst The Wrap reports that Craig is, “nearing a deal.” The actor would play the role of the journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, who enlists the help of the mysterious female computer hacker.
A representative of Sony reminds us that, “We have not offered any roles to anyone nor are we negotiating with anyone,” but The Wrap reports that Craig will fly out to have dinner with Fincher on Friday, presumably to discuss him possibly starring in the Dragon Tattoo remake.
Although you may assume that Craig is a busy man with a thousand different projects on his slate, if you look at his résumé he is only officially attached to Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens. Although he’s contracted for another Bond film, the 23rd installment in the long-running spy franchise was recently delayed indefinitely.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo won’t start shooting until October, which would give Craig plenty of time to shoot Cowboys & Aliens this summer. Seems like all the pieces are in place for him to star, right?
On the issue of whether Craig is suited to the role, I would say he definitely is. The original Dragon Tattoo (which was only released last year and is still playing internationally) is an extremely well-made, tense film and the role of the journalist requires a certain kind of look and presence for it to work. The original actor, Michael Nyqvist, had both those things and I think Craig has them too.
To reiterate: nothing has been signed for Craig to star in the remake at this point (although I’m betting that he’ll end up starring), but it’s always fun to discuss the prospect.
Would you like to see Daniel Craig star in Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo remake or is someone else better suited (Brad Pitt)?
As stated, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is scheduled to begin shooting this October and will be released in December, 2011.
