Daniel Craig The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Daniel Craig To Star In Finchers Dragon Tattoo Remake?

An English-language remake of the dark Swedish thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – based on the worldwide best-selling novel – is evidently a hot property at the moment. The project has already snagged master director David Fincher and a script is already being worked on by Steven Zaillian (American Gangster, Schindler’s List).

As far as casting goes, there’s been a lot of interest in the lead female role of a neo-punk computer hacker who is hired by a journalist to investigate the case of a woman whose been missing for four decades. Actresses reportedly interested in that role include Carey Mulligan (although the producer recently debunked her involvement), Keira Knightley, Ellen Page and Natalie Portman.

However, what may be of more interest to you than the female role is who will play the male lead. Even though Brad Pitt is supposedly considering the role, both Deadline and The Wrap are reporting that James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, is now attached.

Deadline has it that there are talks going on between Craig and the filmmakers, whilst The Wrap reports that Craig is, “nearing a deal.” The actor would play the role of the journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, who enlists the help of the mysterious female computer hacker.

A representative of Sony reminds us that, “We have not offered any roles to anyone nor are we negotiating with anyone,” but The Wrap reports that Craig will fly out to have dinner with Fincher on Friday, presumably to discuss him possibly starring in the Dragon Tattoo remake.

Although you may assume that Craig is a busy man with a thousand different projects on his slate, if you look at his résumé he is only officially attached to Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens. Although he’s contracted for another Bond film, the 23rd installment in the long-running spy franchise was recently delayed indefinitely.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo won’t start shooting until October, which would give Craig plenty of time to shoot Cowboys & Aliens this summer. Seems like all the pieces are in place for him to star, right?

On the issue of whether Craig is suited to the role, I would say he definitely is. The original Dragon Tattoo (which was only released last year and is still playing internationally) is an extremely well-made, tense film and the role of the journalist requires a certain kind of look and presence for it to work. The original actor, Michael Nyqvist, had both those things and I think Craig has them too.

Daniel Craig & Michael Nyqvist

To reiterate: nothing has been signed for Craig to star in the remake at this point (although I’m betting that he’ll end up starring), but it’s always fun to discuss the prospect.

Would you like to see Daniel Craig star in Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo remake or is someone else better suited (Brad Pitt)?

As stated, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is scheduled to begin shooting this October and will be released in December, 2011.

  1. I very much like the idea of Craig doing this, he is great for the part but if he signs on then consider him out of Bond forever. The current Bond situation is very similar to Dalton in the eighties and early nineties.

    Time to recast Bond.

Anyway I digress, Craig certainly has the dogged world weary look about him that fits Blomkvist perfectly, but I wouldnt be against Pitt playing the character either as he is the right age.

I’m very curious to see who is going to play Lisbeth Salander though, Keira Knightley is perfect really, just going off the descriptions from the book anyway.

  2. I need to read this book.

  3. Okay, I have to admit that Michael Nygvist and Daniel Craig looks the same from one angle. But I do hope Craig can nail the kind of persona Nyqvist did in the original.

  4. Craig is a very busy man these days. Hes good in any movie

  5. I would definetely love it if Daniel Craig would play Blomkvist. As an avid lover of the book series, I think Cragi is an excellent actor and looks similar to what I think Blomkvist should look like. I was very upset that they were going to have Brad Pitt as Mikael, but now that’s it’s not true makes me a lot more happy. And if it’s not Craig, fine, just don’t have Brad Pitt. Please, just don’t.

  6. Craig would be amazing in this role, and can not believe there is a better suited actor to take on this part. I have read the books and seen the Swedish version of he movie, I love the series. I must admit that once I hear Craig was in the running to play Blomkvist I can’t imagine anyone else.

  7. Daniel Craig is okay as the American (at least non-Swedish) Blomkvist but how about Kirsten Bell (of Veronica Mars fame) as the American Lisbeth? She’d be perfect!!

  8. As a huge fan of the books, I would absolutely hate to see Brad Pitt as Blomkvist. Craig is perfect! I hope that they cast an unknown as Lisbeth Salander because I can’t think of any famous actress I’d want to play her.

  9. Gemma Arterton should be considered for Lisbeth

  10. stellan skarsgard perfect as martin

  11. Omg I love u sooo much I love cowboys and aliens <3

  12. omg, Daniel Graig is so ho!!
