In the current era of TV reboots and revivals, some attempts have succeeded and some have failed. One success story has been Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World, a modern sequel series to ’90s TGIF staple sitcom Boy Meets World. For those who’ve yet to check the show out, Girls Meets World focuses on teen girls Riley (Rowan Blanchard) and Maya (Sabrina Carpenter), and their tight-knit circle of friends. Riley is the daughter of Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga Matthews (Danielle Fishel) from Boy Meets World, and is similar to her parents in many ways. On the other hand, Maya is more in the Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) mold, a deadpan snarker who enjoys bending the rules.
In addition to the regular presence of Cory and Topanga, Girl Meets World has featured guest turns from many other members of the Boy Meets World cast over the course of its (so far) just over two seasons. With season 3 moving the setting to high school, GMW is starting to resemble its progenitor even more, down to creating a new opening credits sequence that mirrors that of the most well-known opening from Boy Meets World. Continuing this theme, Girl Meets World‘s season 3 finale is set to play host to a massive Boy Meets World cast reunion, including nearly every fan-favorite character one can think of.
The season finale in question – titled “Girl Meets Ilha das Flores” – was recently filmed, and Disney has released a brand new photo of the combined casts together in the Matthews living room. Check the photo out in all its nostalgic glory below (via TVLine).
As any fan of both Girl Meets World and Boy Meets World will no doubt have noticed already, the above image includes the following characters: Riley, Maya, Cory, Topanga, Riley’s brother Auggie, Maya’s mom Katy, Shawn, Cory’s teacher and mentor Mr. Feeny, Cory’s brothers Josh and Eric, Cory’s parents, Stuart Minkus, reformed bully Harley Keiner, and once thought lost teacher Mr. Turner. In an odd move, the two women on the right are the actresses who played Cory’s younger sister Morgan at different time periods. One wonders if they’ll take turns playing the character in different scenes of the finale. Conspicuous by their absences are Riley and Maya’s friends Lucas and Farkle.
While this reunion is certainly a nice present for fans of both series, the last few days have seen a lot of speculation surface that Girl Meets World‘s third season will be its last. For its part, Disney has issued a rather noncommittal denial of these rumors, asserting that the show will soon wrap production on season 3 and is scheduled to continue airing new episodes into 2017, but that no decision has been made on the long-term future of the series.
Will season 3 of Girl Meets World mark the end of the road for Riley and Maya? It’s too early to tell, but if it does, at least things will end with a smile.
Girl Meets World season 3 airs Fridays at 8pm on the Disney Channel.
