We’re only a few days from seeing Stephen Sommers’ vision of G.I. Joe with the release of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. To wet your appetite, we have eleven new movie stills to show you, including a long-awaited look at Destro’s (Chris Eccleston) mask!

If you asked me a few months ago – when the first pictures surfaced, showing off the individual characters – whether I was looking forward to Rise of Cobra, I would have stated enthusiastically “YES”. As time went on, however, the first video clips started coming online and my enthusiasm turned into concern.

Then, just as the hammer was starting its downward swing towards the nail, forever sealing my opinion, early reviews started hitting the Internet, and, much to many people’s surprise, the general consensus was that Rise of Cobra doesn’t suck!

Apparently Sommers wants to put the hammer of doubt away and never bring it out again, because he recently released the concept art for Destro’s mask, and if the real mask is anything close to the concept art below then I think the movie could turn out to be really cool.

  1. You gotta believe the early reviews were coming from inside the studio that produced or backed the movie. My opinion at least since they were a little too positive.

  2. Looks cool to me.

  3. The one thing about Sommers is that his films are fun! Just plain fun, I love watching The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, it is continously on my dvd player and so far from early reviews, this movie is supposed to be what it is. Plain fun!

  4. @The Critic

I know the guys who put out those early reviews personally, and trust me – they are NOT shills for the studios. As a matter of fact every one of them RIPPED Transformers 2 in their reviews, and both films are from Paramount.

It might have been a case of extremely low expectations, however.

    Enough of a blank space?

I believe the “mask” pictured isn’t Destro’s actual face. It’s more likely part of Destro’s family “collection”. One of the ancestors of the contemporary Lord Destro was punished with a hot iron mask grafted to his face by French lords when they discovered he’d been double dealing arms. The Destro manor is chock full of that sort of family memorabilia. The photo looks like a prop head, not a working mask.

they bashed rotf? That sucks. I hate to hear that but at least they’re honest.

    @bill Blume
    did you see terminator salvation?

  7. @The Critic… no, my kids didn’t go out of town in time for “Terminator Salvation” (although, it’s unlikely I’d have talked my wife into going to that). I’ve been really shocked at how short-lived some of the big movies have been this summer.

  8. @ bill Blume
you have to remember people want to see these movies right away when they come out but salvation died down quickly. You might like it though. It had some bad acting but it was a decent action flick.

  10. Heh… nothing like a case of low expectations to help you enjoy a movie better. Usually.

Regardless I didn’t expect good reviews of this movie at all… so now my interest is piqued in watching this movie for, actually, the first time ever.

Is anybody here going to review the movie?

  11. I’m ready for some pics of Cobra Commander, cuz the pics I saw of the movie toy figurine were horrid! I hope he does the “hood” thing. I will see this, mainly cuz my wife wants too, but I am interested in seeing how it stacks up………..

  12. I was deadset against seeing this movie, but curiousity and good early reviews are urging me to see it. Paramount wouldn’t screen it for critics if they weren’t confident about it after all.

Love the Destro mask, I hope Cobra Commander is as impressive.

  13. Cobra Commander will look like a turd in this movie, that much has been established. But I seriously don’t/won’t care, as long as the rest of the movie is great (which I think it will be), and especially if they make a cool costume for him in the second movie. There is hope for that, since they’ve stayed fairly true to the original designs of The Baroness, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Destro. If they don’t, it sure will put a damp on the series for me.

I’ve always looked on Cobra Commander as the only contender to Darth Vader in cool looking villains department, and it is *so* important that they bring out his real image in the next one. It’s like with the X-men movies. It could have been something really special with the original costumes, but there just isn’t a lot that reminds us of the comic book. To me it’s very sad, becaus it’s like they have access to some of the coolest and greatest character designs ever created (and tweaked and updated over a number of years), and because of some worries about it not looking realistic enough they scrap it all and create something totally new, which doesn’t look like the comic book at all and just use the names to sell tickets.

At least in the GI Joe movie they’ve kept *a lot* of the masks, which I think is awesome. Propbably not since the original Star Wars trilogy has there been so many cool masks in one movie. That is the main reason why I’m so excited about this.

  14. Whoa, now, Cobra Commander maybe cool but Serpentor is the main guy!

  15. The movie looks cool, it’s a big production. Very 60s-70s high concept spy movies.

Like I have stated before, my only problem is that Snake-Eyes’ mask has lips. Other than that I’m going to go and enjoy the movie.

    GO JOE!!!

  16. am i the Only one who has heard rumors
    that Ray Park
    (snake-eyes, Darth maul, Headless-horseman, Toad)
is Set to Play one Mister “Danny Rand” in a IRON FIST film adaptation of one of my Favorite Comic books ?

i heard it got put off a few years back, and it was getting picked up again.

  17. Old news to us comic book geeks…

That project has been trying to get off the ground for like eight years, though.

  18. And in a way I’m glad it didn’t yet, because Iron Fist finally got some grand writing in recent years.
