‘GI Joe: Retaliation’ Set Video: Meet Roadblock & Lady Jaye

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is currently shooting in and around New Orleans, and tidbits of info are beginning to leak from the set. If you haven’t already seen the photo of our own Ben Kendrick on set looking (semi-)tough standing next to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, you need to go ahead and click HERE. Today we have a set video to share, which features some of the new G.I. Joe 2 cast members discussing their characters.

The Rise of Cobra sequel is being directed by Jon Chu (Step Up 2&3) and will take a different approach to G.I. Joe than the over-the-top, cheesy, popcorn action flick that director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) made of the first film. This includes dumping the original cast, with the smart exceptions of Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow), and (largely because they are necessary for the continuing story) Channing Tatum (Duke) and Arnold Vosloo (Zartan). The new additions to the cast include Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Elodie Yung, RZA, DJ Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Joseph Mazzello, and Walton Goggins.

In the set video below (courtesy of ET) you’ll hear Johnson talking about his character, Roadblock, as well Adrianne Palicki discussing her character Lady Jaye, and D.J. Cotrona (Flint) discussing how great it is to be back in military fatigues alongside his Dear John co-star Channing Tatum.

Inside word is that Chu and Co. are truly re-envisioning this franchise as a more gritty military action flick, which should bode well for anyone and everyone who thought the first film was a stinking hunk of cheese. They’ve certainly improved the cast by leaps and bounds, with bonafide “BAMFs” like Johnson, Willis, Goggins and Stevenson positioned on both sides of the Joe/Cobra divide. Fingers crossed that we will never again have to bear witness to another “accelerator suit” sequence (or Marlon Wayans one-liner, for that matter).

Well know more, I’m sure, once an official trailer for the film hits.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation will be in theaters on June 29, 2012. Stay tuned for our behind-the-scenes coverage of the film, which should be posted in the coming months.

  1. i liked the first movie……but this sounds awesome. will miss ripcord though…

    • I will too, Duke and Ripcord were awesome together. I wonder if they’ll even write him out?

      • Me too, but ya gotta love this cast!

  2. Wow, whats up with “Fingers crossed that we will never again have to bear witness to another “accelerator suit” sequence (or Marlon Wayans one-liner, for that matter).”. The accelerator suit sequence was pretty cool, the one-liner, yeah I can get with that, but the accelerator sequence was cool.

  3. This is what GI Joe should have been

    • I whole-heartily agree!!! This is what I wanted to see the first time.

  4. We need Sgt Slaughter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I can get behind getting rid of Marlon Wayans and the kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun who ruined the image of Cobra Commander for me. But, I think Christopher Eccleston was a great villain and would have liked to see more of Destro. I didn’t mind Dennis Quaid as Hawk either. But the new cast list is impressive, so I’ll have to keep an eye on this

  6. Thats stupid =( I hate it when they change the actors so technically most of the actors they used in the first film are gone even Joesph Gorden Levitt who was suppose to be playing Cobra in this new film… so im alittle confused what exactly is this movie supposed to be called G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra or G.I: Joe Retaliation? or is Retaliation supposed to happen before The Rise of Cobra?

  7. The fact that the “reporter” doesn’t know what “BAMF” while interviewing a movie star means makes me want to hit something. Do you think she was in diapers when Pulp Fiction came out?

    • The only thing that BAMF makes me think of is Nightcrawler’s teleportation.

  8. Man I want to see this. I also really hope that snake eyes and storm shadow have a new look.

  9. I just hope this is gonna be awesome.

  10. I feel Cobra Commander and Destro do still need to be in this, just try and make em fit better. I mean take away that crappy helmet CC had on and give him something more fitting from the cartoon. I mean for crying out loud they still have Zartan so why not CC and Destro?? And yes the accelerator suits where silly and fit in more with the cartoon but in a live action movie… Bad idea. Lastly while Marlon Wayans I’m sure can be a great actor, I just didn’t like his performance in the first film.

    • according to wikipedia a casting sheet that was leaked on the internet revealed cobra is still in it although the actor that’s playing him is unknown.

      • That’s a good thing. Maybe it will be a nobody who will leave the mask on. Too many big-name actors play masked characters (ala Deadpool). I hope they put the mask on Cobra Commander and leave it on….and use T-pain’s Vocoder – autotune :) lol

  11. As a fan of G.I. Joe from birth , I had no problem with the first film, except for cobra commander and destro. I really think marlon wayans is getting way to much blame for where that movie went wrong .

  12. If Channing Tatum is starring, it’s guaranteed to be a stinking hunk of cheese.

  13. If you liked the first movie then you don’t know what GI JOE is. And you’re a retard as well. I wish they didn’t bring Tatum back.

    • so you’re saying anyone who is disagrees with you is retarded?

everyone has different opinions, accept it….

      • @Ben

No, no, spiros’ not saying that, what he meant was that if you only liked it and did not love it then you don’t know GI JOE and if you didn’t like it all that doesn’t make you a renard. Different strokes for different folks.just

I am fairly sure that spiro misses Tatum Channing though.

        • Nice use of renard! :P

    • Seriously? Everyone has an opinion. And my opinion is that you shouldn’t go around calling people “mentally handicapped” for having a view different than yours. Use a word like “renarded” next time.

      http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Renarded

      • I learned something new. Thanks B-List :)

      • Renard – a stew of meat, vegetables and potatoes

        I don’t get it.

Renarded – The politically correct term for when a normal (non-mentally handicapped) person does something stupid or idiotic.

Oh, so it’s a synonym for Kahless.

        petaQ!!

        :-)

  14. Besides the 80s cartoon the GI Joe: Resolute shorts is the best Joe adaptation. Beating out every other form of media adaptation.

    • Totally agree with you. I despised everything from the first movie, from top to bottom. The writing was poor, character development seemed absolutely rushed, the casting was horrible, a korean actor for Stormshadow…really? It’s like they really take the audience for idiots there. The Dr. Mindbender/Cobra Commander tie-together idea was absolutely horrendous. It was all basically just cheese piled on more cheese piled on more cheese. The only thing I enjoyed from the first movie was basically Snake Eyes & that had some to do with him being a non-speaking character…this is all just my take on it though. :p I truly hope this movie does stay grounded as is speculated. This franchise truly deserves a well done theatrical interpretation!

  15. Didnt get the whole Ripcord and Scarlett thing from the first movie. I always thought Duke and Scarlett were together in the 1980′s cartoon.

    • Yeah that threw me off as well, same with the romance between the Baroness & Duke. To me, they would’ve been better off changing the names of everyone & including the title of the movie & they would’ve been much better off. That was not G.I. Joe… :(

  16. Rock as Roadblock = G.I. JOE. BAMF indeed; this looks like it could be so so much better. However!, Channing Tatum back? Why does this guy keep getting acting jobs? He couldn’t act his way out of a wet paper bag.

    • He makes that blank stone face stare like he is constipated…eyes slightly crossed. I almost flipped out when it was mentioned he was up for Captain America.

  17. I thought step up 3D was rubbish, the acting in that movie wouldnt be good enough for a low budget porn movie(YES thats how bad it was!) so why on God’s green earth is this Chu guy directing this movie? The first G.I. Joe was great, why change directors?

  18. I liked the first movie but than realized it sucked once i viewed it at home on dvd im already looking ahead to the next movie so i can see the crimsen twins
