GI Joe Retaliation French Trailer G.I. Joe: Retaliation French Trailer

The trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation surprised a lot of people with its more grounded and gritty take on the G.I. Joe universe. Director Jon M. Chu is also stacking the cast with some celebrated action stars like Bruce Willis and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, in order to help lure the average moviegoer back toward this franchise – which admittedly had something of a rocky start.

Today we have a new French  trailer for G.I. Joe 2.  It’s pretty much an echo of the U.S. trailer, except with a few more shots of vehicles, heroes and villains doing battle, and a nice little shoutout to Cobra Commander’s revamped costume.

Check out the trailer below:

Suffice to say: In the opinion of many, this is a much more exciting take on the G.I. Joe lore, and a seemingly vast improvement on the first film. Fan-favorite characters like Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are still intact, Cobra Commander finally looks like his good old maniacal self, and the bland of assortment of Joes from the first film have been replaced by the likes of Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis. Kind of hard to complain.

All 3 trailers for G.I. Joe: Retaliation have pretty much focused on the same set pieces and action sequences, and while those have left a good impression, a more in-depth look at the characters and story wouldn’t be a bad thing… Or would it?

G.I. Joe: Retaliation will be in theaters on June 29, 2012.

  1. to be honest i found the 1st be a pretty decent action movie aside from the screw up with characters, poor human CGI and channing tatum the movie was pretty decent.

this however looks alot better in terms of everything, as long as tatum isn’t in this (or gets killed off early) then it shall be one fun session at the cinemas :)

    • Its nice to see someone else liked the movie with the exception of Channing whom along with the Wyans brother is the worst part about the first GIJ film. While replacing Channing with The Rock will be avast improvement there’s no doubt that adding Bruce Willis to the line up will help.

QUESTION: It was my understanding that in the GI Joe lore there was no such person as GI Joe; it was a generic name used to refer to a member of the team and not meant to refer to any one single individual and yet the trailers imply that Willis’s character is GI Joe. Am I just mis-reading the trailer?

      • The current continuity has Joseph Colton being the original G.I. Joe recruit…the original “G.I. Joe”. He was a legend and thought to be a myth until he popped back into active duty when Cobra reared its ugly, hooded head with extreme prejudice. He got the Joes reorganized and back into their elite fighting form. He came back with “G.I. Jane” who is now a physicist and advises him on various matters (I am trying to remember if they are now married…?).

In the ’60s toy line, there was no Joseph Colton, nor was there one in the ’80s toy line or show OR comic. When he “returned”, the character’s look was modelled after those ’60s action dolls. There WAS a Jane doll however, but she was just the token female figure to try and attract the Barbie crowd over to G.I. Joe.

        Hope that helped… :)

        • P.S. That means, of course, that while it’s cool to have Bruce Willis in the film, he looks NOTHING like the idea behind Colton.

This is not a problem for me though…

        • Had to sign up to correct you here. Joe Colton does not appear in the toy or cartoon continuities as you said, but does appear in the original comic continuity, which is considered by most fans to be the definitive canon continuity. He only had a few appearances, but was established already as the original ‘Joe. He and Jane were, I believe, eventually married; I know they both went on to work on the SDI “Star Wars” program, with high enough clearance to assume direct control over the pulse weapon.

Can’t wait for this movie. Firefly is my second fave Joe character (Cobra Commander being my all time favourite fictional character), and Ray Stevenson definitely seems solid enough to pull it off, but if you were upset by the first film’s depiction of CC (didn’t mind it myself; within the overall futuristic reboot of the continuity, that was the least of my concerns. the nanites, delta suits and suspension of the laws of physics were far worse crimes – seriously, SINKING ICE?!?) then note that Firefly’s true face was never revealed (well maybe once in the last few years, but it may have also been a fake) in the original comic run whilst Cobra Commander’s was, so seeing Ray’s face repeatedly has somewhat dampened my enthusiasm for this romp too. But then I see Jinx and the Red Ninja, and I’m back on board.

          Cobra!!!

          • I had forgotten issue #86 of the Marvel run. Thank you. I do stand by the assertion, however, that he had his real impact later on, when the comics reappeared after the Marvel era. He became particularly important when he was called upon to take up leadership again of the GI Joe team during its restructuring and with Hawk out of commission.

I, too, am hoping for an excellent, exciting new film…

  2. This looks great im glad they had Cobra Commander in this, along with getting his costume right.I feel all these action movies will be great this year except for Ghost Rider.I’ll definatelly be at the theatre every other weekend this summer but first bring on Wrath of the Titans to kickoff the spring just right b4 the summer gets here.

    • I saw a few minutes of the 1st movie the other day. Then I changed the channel.

  3. I didn’t even realize that was supposed to be Cobra Commander until this article – it looks more like one of the classic Vipers, but still a huge improvement over the look in the first movie
