‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Writer Hired for ‘G.I. Joe 3′

GI Joe 3 Evan Daugherty Snow White and the Huntsman Writer Hired for G.I. Joe 3

Since 2009′s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra brought the world of G.I. Joe from the realm of action figures and TV shows to the big screen, the franchise has been a solid moneymaker for Paramount (though not always the biggest hit with critics). That’s why it was no surprise when the studio announced that it would be moving forward with G.I. Joe 3.

We already knew that director Jon M. Chu, who directed G.I. Joe: Retaliation, is set to return for the second sequel. Now we know who will be scripting the film, too: Evan Daugherty, the writer behind last year’s box office hit Snow White and the Huntsman.

THR was the first to report the news about Daugherty, who, in a few short years, has built quite a reputation in Hollywood. In addition to Snow White and the Huntsman, Daugherty has a number of other big projects under his belt including Divergent, the much-anticipated adaptation of the popular YA series. Daugherty also came in for a re-write on the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.

G.I. Joe 3 should give Daugherty another chance to put his unique spin on a big-budget project, but it will also make him a major target of fanboy angst should the movie fail to deliver. Of course that’s probably not fair, but such is life in the fickle world of Internet message boards.

G.I. Joe 2 not in 3D Snow White and the Huntsman Writer Hired for G.I. Joe 3

G.I. Joe: Retaliation offered plenty of great action sequences, but was criticized for being light on plot and weak on character development (though an argument can be made that that’s exactly what you should expect out of a G.I. Joe movie). If Daugherty hopes to lift the franchise past being a blow-em-up spectacle, maybe he should take a look at some of the characters that have yet to appear in the film (we’ve got 14 recommendations).

What would you like to see in Daugherty’s take on G.I. Joe 3? Drop us a line in the comments.

  1. I personally really enjoy the gi joe films. THough i think the first was a little better than the second. i hope they bring back some of the characters from the first, or at least ONE of them that they didnt bring back for number 2. I wouldnt mind seeing channings girlfriend/the baroness return.

    • I agree. They aren’t good movies by any means, but I’ve found them to be entertaining.

  2. He sold the spec script for $3 million with his writing partner. Only to be rewritten by two other screenwriters. Including Amini (Drive screenwriter). Doubt this will be any better than the last two installations.

  3. the 1st joe movie was ok, the 2nd was pretty crap b/c of how generic it felt. next one needs to have more intense fight scenes, cooler gunfights and better pacing with less subplots that are shoved in there for no reason (snake eyes garbage).

  4. Hasbro should hire Michael Bay to reboot GI-JOE. He’s actually perfect for that franchise. A much better fit than Transformers.

    • I actually agree with that statement.

  5. Bring back duke! And gi joe 2 is crap! gi joe 1 is good. Please give us a better movie this time !

    • agree, bring back duke. i like the first one a lot better too, the second one was pretty disappointing.

  6. What a combination, Snow White and G.I. Joe Retaliation. Easily two of the most forgettable films I’ve seen in the past year or two. Some of that might be the directing, but the writing was not too spectacular in either case, I dare say.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was a lot of fun, say what you will about it otherwise. Retaliation, for me, was kind of in no man’s land. Not really fun, but not very dramatically engaging either. The franchise needs an upgrade all around, except for the casting, which was pretty good. Maybe Daugherty can help out in ways that Snow White did not hint at?

    • I think what won me over in Cobra were the performances of JGL and Chris Eccleston, who KNEW they were in a cheesy movie.

    • I agree. I had a lot of fun with the first, but the second was just disappointing to the point where it became annoying.

I hope they can turn things around with the third.

  7. seriously…GI Joe 1 was better? with the stupid aroured suits, bad acting, stupid plot and that underwater battle which just plain sucked! granted that the 2nd one wasnt great but it was a hell of a lot closer to the comic book stories, vehicles, characters, weapons etc.
Yes bring back the baroness, if Michael Bay did it then it would be awesome.

    • Michael Bay can’t do it, the summer is over so all his writers are back at preschool.

      • lol. Probably true too!

    • The first one had ridiculously cheesy lines “You and what army”, awful acting, and was just crap. The second one was much better so I’m excited about the third one.

  8. YMMV on the good action scenes. Jon Chu directed Bieber’s concert movie, and that’s where the direction was apparent, in the choreographed ninja battle.

  9. Hope they will bring back both Duke and Roadblock. The second movie had focused (too) much on action sequences that made me found something illogical in it.
By the way, this one is worth looking forward to!!

  10. I thought the first film really sucked, especially the freaking Wayans brother. I also did not enjoy Tatum as Duke. However, I felt the second film was fantastic and I look forward to the third.

  11. Im in my mid 30 and had tons of toys and comics but both movies sucked! Complete junk when I went to the second I had no problem going to the Jon or get more refreshments. The ninja mountain battle completely predictable, honestly it look like the same scene just looped each jump. Lol junk

  12. Im still holding out for a universe cross over betweern Battleship and GI Joe

    • Don’t get your hopes up.

  13. i liked the 1st one better than the second The 2nd one didn’t feel right after Duke was supposedly killed. I hope they bring him back and the rest of the Gi Joes I know its many to choose from. I’m really hoping for Destro to come back and make Serpentor. Alot of people I know want to see that.

  14. The second movie was absolute trash. How do you go ahead and unceremoniously as possible kill a franchise character in the first ten minutes? Ridic. Also, hiring the guy responsible for one of the worst movies a I saw last year doesn’t make me feel better about a third installment.

    • Not to mention the only way they can revive the GI Joe movie franchise is if that director brings Thor with him. He can keep Kristen Stewart. I was hoping the dwarfs would have accidentally killed her in that movie. She’s awful.

  15. Didn’t really like in the 2nd film that they killed off Duke and made Roadblock the leader. Out of all the people they could of brought in like Beachhead, Falcon or even Flint to lead they went with Roadblock?! Why cause Hollywood is trying to force feed The Rock down our throats.

  16. yes please bring back duke, the second one sucked the first one was better, need the original characters and its ok dewayne johnson to the team as road block.

  17. I agree with all of the “bring back Duke” comments. I could not even get it straight that he allegedly died until late in Retaliation, in spite of my best efforts to pay close attention. Just play it as though he “went underground” and no one will care.

And bring back Scarlett. I would rather have her re-cast, but in any case, I always want her to be involved with G.I. Joe stuff. JGL would be welcome to return as well.

I did like Lady Jaye in Retaliation. The writing could’ve been better, but otherwise, good casting there.

  18. 100% give us duke and I’d take the baroness if I could get her but must have duke. No stupid, stupid suits and no wayans bro but duke and maybe baroness. Add them to the new crew and throw in a couple newbies so hasbro gets their toy sales and we’re good.

  19. I was hoping that the Quaid brothers atleast make an apearence if not be stars of the movie. Dennis Quaid stole the show in the first one, Now it’s time to double down with Randy.
