It might seem odd to get a movie update from the head of a major toy company, but it actually makes a ton of sense when the movie in question is G.I. Joe 2. In a recent interview, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner talked about progress on the film and gave some updates on the script.

Speaking with MTV, Goldner confirmed recent reports that multiple directors are competing to direct G.I. Joe 2, saying, "we have a really good script and we're right now talking to a number of directors." Goldner then went into greater detail on the script, which was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (ZombielandDeadpool).

According to Goldner, who gave the script enthusiastic praise, you won't have to have seen G.I. Joe to enjoy the sequel (an interesting statement, since a lot of people who did see G.I. Joe thought it was terrible). Quoting Goldner,

"In many ways, it'll be great for the people who saw the first one, but you don't need to have studied every element of the first one to enjoy the second. We've made sure that that's the case."

Goldner then went on to give a specific example of how the sequel might play out as an independent movie that isn't completely predicated on the first film. If you haven't seen G.I. Joe, be advised that this next quote contains SPOILERS.

"Obviously, we know coming out of the first film that the president is an impostor. You might begin with the knowledge of having your president as an impostor. What would that mean? From that, you can tell a very big story without only having to rely on the chronology of the first film."

Back in August 2009 when the first film came out, Screen Rant head honcho Vic Holtreman gave G.I. Joe a positive three-star review writing that it was a "summer popcorn action movie done right." Does that mean a sequel will be equally enjoyable?

Right now, there are a lot of factors still up in the air for G.I. Joe 2. Once a director is chosen for the project, and we get a few more details about the plot for the film, we will have a much better idea of what G.I. Joe 2 will look like. In the meantime, we're just going to have to spend our time wondering exactly how Storm Shadow will be written back into the sequel and pondering what another epic Storm Shadow vs. Snake Eyes fight might look like.
