‘G.I. Joe Retaliation’ Trailer: Looks Better Than the First One

3 years ago by

Next summer, director Jon Chu (Step Up 2 & 3) will attempt to craft a better G.I. Joe movie than the one put together by director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) back in 2009. To combat fan skepticism (which remains on red alert status at the time of writing this), Chu and CO. have promised that their sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, will give the franchise a fresh start, with a better cast, better story and most of all, better action than its predecessor.

With today’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation trailer, we’re getting our first look at whether or not the actual film lives up to all the promises.

G.I. Joe 2 comes to us with mostly a new cast of characters, though the story will continue from where Rise of Cobra left off, in the sense that Cobra Commander (no longer played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is now the masked leader of the terrorist organization, and his crony, master of disguise Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), has infiltrated the highest echelon of the U.S. government, posing as the president. With Cobra pulling the strings of power, and still running lawless throughout the globe, a new Joe force is tasked with saving the day.

Check out the trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation below:

As you can see in the trailer, one lure of G.I. Joe 2 is the improved cast – with fan-favorite action stars like Bruce Willis, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ray Stevenson replacing the likes of Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje – and the returning players having been whittled down to favorites like Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee). Of course, Channing Tatum returning is something that will still have many haters of the first film groaning –  and it’s fair to say the “hot girl” quotient has dipped a bit, with the addition of Adrianne Palicki and Elodie Young not quite covering the subtractions of beauties like Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller and Karolina Kurkova. But I digress.

The other thing of note is the action glimpsed in the trailer: Director Jon Chu has made it clear that more practical effects and grounded, gritty, militaristic battle action is his intention for G.I. Joe: Retaliation. If nothing else, this trailer proves we will be getting just that. However, will the change in approach help G.I. Joe 2 stand out as an improvement over its predecessor? Or does the cartoon/comic source material deserve more fantastical representation…say, like, accelerator suits?

I’m sure the Internet will pool the popular opinion of the fanboy masses, after they’ve had a chance to view this trailer (you can vote right here).

  1. I just nerded out when I saw this trailer!!! No offense to the first one, but this movie is gonna kick summer action ass!! And its all Cobra this time too!! Next movie…the Commander returns along with Destro. COBRA!!!!!

  2. loved the first one, but this one still looks awesome! wish they would bring back channing tatum’s friend and girlfriend though. and how did the white ninja (sorry forgot his name) survive?

  3. I like the switch to the more classic Cobra helmet. Not sure about the rest, I didn’t mind the old cast. Also i did like the introduction of Jinx.

  4. Not really impressed. At least it doesn’t look as AWFUL as the first one was.

I’ll just wait for The Expendables 2, Skyfall 007, The Dark Knight Rises, and Marvel’s The Avengers.

You know? Action movies for real men as opposed to 12 year old boys.

    • Really? Well … thanks for taking time out of your adult life to post. It is much appreciated.

      • if screenrant had a “like” button……

    • Funny cause I know The Avengers there will be 12 year olds and under watching it.. sooooo to say Avengers is a real man’s movie is laughable haha

      • @ Soul

I wouldn’t be surprised if The Avengers had better, if not more better action than TDKR.

        • @WallyWest, Probably will. The Batman movie fight scenes suck hard.

          • Nope. Nothing about the batman films sucks hard. Just that fight scenes take a back seat to drama and tension.

  5. Bruce Willis just makes any movie BADA**.

    This looks pretty fantastic!

  6. to bad there couldnt be a Bruce Willis-The Rock fight, that would be awesome

    • There might be a captain america/Iron man type clash there for dominance. Since tatum is either killed off or emasculated

  7. Long as it has ‘Ray Park’ in it as ‘Snake Eyes’ (which it does). I am watching it. :)

  8. I like that they are contuning the story form the first movie. Tatum will be fine combining with the new cast.

  9. Looks like they having Channing take a backseat on this one.

  10. Wow, it looks like they’ll be getting my 12$ come August.. Surprising.

  11. I so nerded out on the mountain scene, the wife totally made fun of the noise that came out of me…

  12. Did anyone else catch the quote at the end “We have to assume there’s no one else we can trust” from Chris Evans at the end? He’s not even in this movie.

    • uhhh, that wasnt chris evans

      • yea it def wasnt, but if they had captain america this movie would end a lot quicker, cobra wouldnt stand a chance, what with all his experience fighting hydra ( who cobra was ripped off from, fun fact)

  13. Looking forward to seeing this movie!

Plus, The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army , added some magic to the trailer!

    • I like the Seven Nation army song, but that Auto-Tuned rendition really sucked and almost caused a gaping hole in my heart hearing a fantastic song being auto-tuned. Auto-Tuning is fun but has been unnecessarily used for stupid reasons way too much in the past few years.

  14. Cobra Commander, More Ninja Action, The Rock, Willis….. *speechless*

  15. this looks bad ass!!! bruce willis!!!! in gi joe!!! ura!!!

  16. Does Cobra Commander have a new helmet simliar to the 80’s cartoon? Was that him? My speakers aren’t workin. And it looked like Snake Eyes doesn’t have those lips on his mask anymore. Trailer for the film looks great, but so did the trailer for the first film which i thought was good but wasn’t great as it could of been.

    • I think he does. It certainly looked like him.

  17. Dont know too much about this film. Trailer looks pretty good though. Is tatum killed in the attack?

  18. I like that they took away the Snake-Eyes mouth, I know it’s accurate to the first Snake-Eyes figure but I personally liked the 2nd iteration of him and on.

That said, I think the desert scene reminds me of the scene on Robot Chicken where all the Joes die at the hands of Fumbles, aka Trouser Snake.

  19. Nope. They’re not taking my money.

  20. I’m hating the fact that this is the GI-JOE sequel, This is what the first one should have looked like. Man has Hollywood got this movie thing backwards. I refuse to pay $18.00 to see something I’m not completely sure about so I’ll have to wait a while and catch it at the cheapy theater.

  21. while getting rid of most of the cast from the first was probably a really good move on their part, itd be a shame to lose the character of duke as leader of the group. the new cobra commander look and the new snake eyes look (no more lips! thank god!)should have been what they went with from the begining, way way more awesome. i refused to pay to see the first in theaters and watched it at a friends house when he had it, but from the looks of it this one will get my money for a ticket (most likely on a ‘back to the future tuesday’ for $7.50)

  22. is that cobra commander in between zartan disguised as president and the guy with the scar at 1:01 to 1:08

    • YES! I think it is. And the guy with the scar is Firefly!

This movie is beast! They totally stole my idea from when I was 8. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

Snake Eyes’ suit looks 100% better. Man, I’m all jitters.

  23. I wasn’t sure about this movie, but the trailer removed any doubts. The additional cast members and style make it seem like this is one to watch this summer.

  24. Seriously. That 2 minute trailer was better than the whole first movie haha – and I didn’t think the first one was as bad as everyone else does.

I remember watching G.I. Joe when I was a kid on and this is exactly what I had hoped a movie would be like. Say what you want about the hotness level of the girls (lol). The girls in this are still gorgeous, if that’s what you’re looking for.

I think the best part of this trailer was the amazing version of ‘Seven Nation Army’ by The White Stripes. That was really great. Of course, the cliff side fight was pretty sweet too.

    Looking forward to this!

    • The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army is a remix done by The Glitch Mob

I knew they were saving him for the end, when is Bruce Willis not a bad ass???

Not to mention, Ray Stevenson, saw a short clip of him fighting Dwaine Johnson, I guess he’s the only guy big enough to look like he can take on The Rock, lol. I’m actually excited to see this. Not to mention the FN-SCAR’s they were using, bad ass…

    • Bruce Willi was not a bad ass in Moonlighting… lol!

      • @K That was before he was discovered in the big time and was shown to the world that he was a bad-ass (Die Hard). lol 😛

      • he was still awesome though, i liked comedian happy go lucky bruce willis

  26. looks that kill channing tatum, it looks better than the first, best visual effects, more action best at everything … awesome movie

  27. yeah, this is gonna be FLYY!!

  28. The trailer looks awesome. BUT, isn’t G.I. JOE supposed to be a secret organization? In the first movie Hawk said that they “technically, did not exist”. So why would the “President” hold a press conference saying he terminated them? Wouldn’t they just be disbanded kinda off-the-record? Also I don’t think the “President” would have the authority to terminate an international peace-keeping team with some twenty-odd Nations as members. Just knit-picking. :)

    • Isn’t that suppose to be Zartan impersonating the president? if it is then I highly doubt he would care compromising the Joes status as an off the grid fighting force.
