‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’: The Real Reason for the Delay

GI Joe Retaliation delayed 570x310 ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation: The Real Reason for the Delay

Last week Paramount Pictures announced that it was delaying the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The action sequel was shifted from its June 29, 2012 launch to March 29, 2013 because the studio wanted to ‘spend extra time converting the film into 3D’. The reason given for the 3D conversion was that the lucrative ticket price could maximise foreign box office revenue and make the film more profitable.

It seemed odd that a studio would pull such a big film just five weeks before it was set to open, and then wait another nine months before it hit screens. Well, not surprisingly the 3D conversion isn’t the real reason for G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s delay. Not by a long shot. Scroll down for the real story.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR (THE OLD VERSION OF) G.I. JOE 2!

Deadline is reporting that G.I. Joe: Retaliation received scores in test screenings that ranged from “mediocre to bad”, and that the one shining light for the film was the relationship between Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson. There was just one tiny problem: Tatum’s character was killed off in the opening minutes of the film. The decision was made to delay the release, arrange a week of reshoots expanding Tatum’s role, and then convert the film into 3D.

Apparently, Paramount didn’t see Channing Tatum as a viable star for the sequel to their 2009 film – hence the reason that Retaliation is toplined by Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis. However, Tatum is now a box office draw following the one-two hit combo of The Vow and 21 Jump Street. That Tatum’s role in Retaliation will be expanded must be good news for his fans and his agent, who must have been able to negotiate a steep fee for the actor’s return.

This line of reasoning still equates the release delay to the cash-grab attempt so many fans saw it as. Hasbro (the toy company that owns G.I. Joe) already suffered the U.S. box office failure of Battleship, and G.I. Joe 2 would’ve been quickly overshadowed by The Amazing Spider-Man (which comes out a week after G.I. Joe 2‘s original release date). With this delay, the studio and toy company are clearly doing everything they can to secure some kind of profits from this venture.

Channing Tatum as Duke ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation: The Real Reason for the Delay

Deadline writes that G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s director Jon M. Chu was ‘shellshocked’ by the news of the release date move (and presumably the reshoots), so it looks like he wasn’t part of the decision making process to change the film at this late stage. Paramount states the added cost of the new work to Joe will be $5 million, and that the budget of the film ‘should stay under $130 million’. This is something of a naive figure, when you take into account how much it must have cost to regroup the production for a week’s filming – and that a decent 3D conversion costs around $10-15 million. On top of this you have the added expense of creating a new marketing campaign for the film, and figuring out what needs to be done with the merchandise for a film that was scheduled to hit screens in the coming weeks.

This trouble for G.I. Joe: Retaliation has a similar parallel to the rumors in 2009 that stated G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers was fired from post-production by Paramount after test screenings for that film resulted in the lowest scores in the studio’s history. Those rumors were shot down (but weren’t completely eradicated, given the film’s lukewarm reception); however, things look a lot worse for G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation will be released on March 29th, 2013. Hopefully.

  1. The reviews in general are pretty good so the re-shoots may have been positive.

One thing I took away from the initial trailers was that it was going to be a far darker film than it has turned out to be.

I thought the concept of only a few guys left was really cool.

    • It made no money at all. I saw a lot of people leave the theater after Duke died. It didn’t even clear 15 million this weekend. They need to realize that NO ONE wants to see a whole lot of the Rock. He just can not act, and when I see his fake smile and capped teeth I want to get my money back. When I see him frown and try to loo tough I feel bad for all of Hollywood. They need to get someone that looks better and acts better for the lead.

      • Might want to check your figures. It opened on Wednesday (sneak peek). It raked in $15.5 million on Friday and thus far has made $26 million (Wed.-Fri.). *It’s expected to gross around $50 million for the week-end, and will likely top $100 million worldwide in it opening frame. *(hitfix.com).

  2. Let’s just say that Paramount didn’t learn their lesson last year and continued in the great tradition of destroying my childhood. Just like the Transformers films, I was expecting a good story and that failed… I mean really really failed! It starts going all over the place and then becomes completely unbelievable. The fact that they still

killed off Duke sucks! The problem is you don’t actually see him dead, or at least event a guy that looks like hime. So you start thinking he’ll show up later in the movie… Which then takes away from the actual story. Aside from that nonsense; you have the drama with StormShadow, which for some reason is able to survive freezing water. I’ve Deadliest Catch… going in there with no shirt and looking like a sushi roll I give him about 10 secs. But no… We don’t need logic or an explanation. It’s just how we want it to be.

Sorry, but they screwed this up last year and they didn’t even try to fix it. 2 no name actors (at least to me) along with the fact that the characters they played had small roles in the actual cartoons managed to have more story than the main characters; and that even sucked more. They were boring! The girl was hot, but boring! Oh and watchout, SnakeEyes can shoot ninja stars coming at him out of the air, but misses every shoot at Cobra Commandor as he walks… WALKS!… like a mile to a stupid helicoper. Then they also decide to ignore Destro. He’s there, but all you get is stay asleep.

So as Paramount closes another Hasbro franchise, I can’t help but hear Queen’s “Another One Bits the Dust” playing in the background. What a waste.

    • I second that! I agree with every single details you mentioned especially the part with SnakeEyes unsuccessful attempt to shoot the WALKING Cobra Commandor. I find it very hard to fathom.

      • I agree if u want to see a good movie go see Olympus has fallen great movie

  3. I was expecting big things in Retaliation, but its beginning to look like, as Odnam made reference, that the cartoon’s from my childhood are being twisted into something unrecognizable. How was Duke, of all people, killed in the first few minutes? It looked like he was going to be in the movie till the end given the amount of time the writer’s took to instill the relationship plot with “the rock”…and yes, much like others stated, I kept thinking Duke would reappear at some random moment of need during the movie and it took away from the story. A lot of the movie seems unrealistic – “but its a movie!!” is probably a response that statement will get. Example 1. Snake-eyes is climbing a mountain with another female and their ropes are already clipped at a higher point…who anchored it?!!! Example 2. how did the satellites that hold these advanced nuclear bombs get into orbit without being noticed? Example 3. How in the world is Storm shadow alive? Wasn’t he killed in the first movie by Snake-eyes? Those are just a couple of the head scratching moments throughout the movie. Keep your eyes opened cause they’re not hard to see. The only good part about this movie was london being destroyed. This was a definite disappointment, but I’m sure if they make a third – I’ll be there watching it hoping there’s a turning point that connects the dots better than the previous makings.

    • I think the reason we never see Duke’s body is because, shocker, he’s not actually dead! We can look forward to Duke having been the target of a capture attack, likely along with Scarlet and maybe another Joe or two, but definitely Duke. He was captured as part of a bigger plot by Cobra Commander and Duke will be brain washed for a portion of Joe 3. Remember: if there’s no body, the guy ain’t dead.

      • your wrong they do show dukes body. when they climb out of the well the roc goes up to dukes body and rips the dog tag off of him.

  4. Very disappointing! I kept waiting for Duke to appear in the mid-part…he didnt show up to the last….i wasn`t convinced that He was dead. I was telling my sister..well, this is how the story goes…on the next part of the movie ( if there will be..and hope they`ll come up with a better one) `Duke`will appear again, for now He is being treated and needs a longer time to rest…like that. Hayyyssss I really like Channing in this movie!!!!!

  5. just saw the movie today and he died still….can you explain that to me? Is this a false movie article? i’m starting to think it is.

  6. Lee – yes, he still died, but he got WAY more screen time than he had originally. That’s what the article meant.

  7. Just watched new Gi Joe Duke dies movie company needs to go bankrupt for stupid decision

  8. It didn’t matter if I liked or didn’t like the first film the fact that my son loved it and we watched it a million times was enough to make me anticipate a sequel. As s kid what made me love GI JOE was the fact that there were so many characters all my friends could play and no one fought over who was who. I looked forward to seeing the returning cast met with new favorites but it seems its been decided for us not to have that cast return and to kill off the star of the show. Thank god for snake eyes…!

  9. Killing duke ruined that movie for me

  10. Once duke died I was morally upset. It didn’t even feelike the same Damn movie.!!!-_-

  11. Spoiler Alert……………….

Look screen rant. Duke still died in the opening minutes!! I am not one to write a critique or review, but this is more of a complaint. I trust your website to be very credible, so when you say they expanded Dukes role, I took it to the bank. Needless to say, I understand you do not have final say itnwhat goes into a movie, but at least report the facts. G.I. JOE did not have to kill one of the main characters, such as Duke. They used Tatums status for more of a draw. If you have any redemptive qualities left, please get in touch with someone and tell them to bring Duke back. The public felt robbed .

  15. Funny story – when i watched the trailer last year before it officially released on youtube that duke died, i showed my friends older brother for him to make it official that duke died and when he did i shouted “No! But he’s too hot to die!” He responded with “I know!” – huh?
okay not funny story but it was funny back then.

  16. strangely enough i read in wikipedia that duke disappears and comes back later on – i know wikipedia lies but it’s hope!

  22. Ok everyone, there are two GI Joes. The first is the insanely awesome comic that was released at the sametime as the cartoon. What this film looks like is Hasbro merging of the two franchises. The comic was a lot more greusome than the over the top cartoon. Guys shot lasers on the cartoon and had machines that back in the eighties were conceptual at best. So when the movie does amazing things why do you yell for realism. That is as sophomoric as asking someone to rewrite shakespeare for todays english. You can but why?

GI Joe is for children. Just as it was when you were all children. I do not want my child watching platoon, hamburger hill, or any other greusome war movie. I like that a lot of it is over the top and unbelievable. Unless you saw the original you can not state matter of factly that screen rant is wrong. Which scenes with Duke in them are you sure were in it before the move to 3d?

G.I. Joe has always been about imagining you are this bad a$$ soldier out to kick some Cobra tail. No matter what Cobra is cooking up, the Joes will prevail. This movie and all Hasbro movies should be about reintroducing their old properties to a younger generation. I think the kids are eating this movie up. Look at the box office totals. And if they can get a toyline to tie in and sell like transformers then even better for them. I do not want more realism, I wanted my kid to walk out wishing he was a Joe. And I wanted to feel like I didn’t waste two hours of my life being miserable. The things kids enjoy and the things adults enjoy are completely different. Mission accomplished. Yo Joe.

  23. I cannot believe what they did to GI Joe! I mean they ruined it! I mean Duke was the leader of the Joe’s in the cartoons, like, prime was the leader of the Autobots. So, to kill him is so wrong it’s disrespectful to anyone who ever watched GI Joe. So, I wish they had never made. The sad thing about the whole thing is that the movie was a good movie, and, I might have really liked it. Bruce Willis is my favorite actor, and, I like the Rock. Also, Snakeyes was great in it, and, I like the story with him and Storm Shadow. Also, Lady Jaye was hot. Especially, in that jogging outfit. So, the movie would have been great. However, killing off Duke was one of the worst decisions in the history of movies. If, anyone, knows anything about GI Joe, then, they would know not to mess with Duke. This would be like making Justice League and killing Superman. Batman (like Snake’s is the cool one} might be the cool one, but, Superman is the leader(Duke). So, killing Duke, literally, ruined the movie for me. On another note, the scenes between The Rock and Duke were great and I wanted to see more. I was a fan of GI Joe, and, this decision to kill off Duke is quite possibly the worst decision in a movie, ever. Right above, the killing off of Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, and, the remake of Evil Dead. However, the killing of Duke is the worst in the history of movies.

  24. Duke needs to return in the 3rd! Even if they recast him. I liked Tatum, but, they need to revive Duke, no matter what.

  25. this movie was AWFULLLLLLLLLLL!!!

    *spoilers*

Theres so much that was awfull about this movie. first off the story line was a awfull storyline to begin with. You dont see really any of the people from the first one because they kill everyone in a bombing. now why was every single joe in a teeny tiny sandspot in the desert who knows. duke was killed and some guy who looked like a low budget version of him survived. the roc over acts, he can only play the same non emotional role in every film the only thing he is good for is big muscles but his m and m peanut head throws that off and big teeth. he is a awfull actor. i think they had to pay him and bruce willis to much money. bruce willises house looked like it was just a studio house, every gun inside it you could tell was fake cabinets and drawers and he doesnt come out till the end. the one part i did like was when snake eyes fought storm shadow i thought this could save the movie if they constant fight like the first one but then they become friends and dont fight at all anymore LOL. i saw the movie yesterday and there was 2 people in the theatre, me and someone else. and i saw it in 3d which wasnt worth it. the cliff scenes in 3d was ok. jinx was pointless to have, having jinx was saying snake eyes was to weak to work alone which is a insult. the rza did horrible acting, he breathes through his mouth and not his nose so when he talks it sounds like he is under water. plus the way he looked made me crack up laughing. instead of looking like old wise warriors the healers looked like homeless wizards. the story line in general was not good. the locations were not good. the vehicles were pretty neat but limited to 1 vs 1 vehicle or just 1 vehicle. firefly looked like george clooney and when he got hit by a car and walked away like nothing happened i had to laugh hard again. my friend told me not to see the movie because it was bad, when i saw the commercial air really fast i knew that the studio knew it was a bad movie. i saw barely any promotion for it at all. i literally went to see it just to see how bad it could be. i dont know why they would green light this project. zartan is a old man the entire movie. destro stays frozen. so you have 2 bad guys which are firefly and cobra vs like 4 joes which werent interesting at all. i honestly dont even remember what happened to cobra commander because i fell asleep 5 times during the movie. i became tired and sleeping was more important to me for a few minutes then watching the rest of the movie. my opinion they should of just re did the cartoon movie if they were going to spend 150 million they should of did it right. even the first movie made no sense because marlon wayans character was a white guy lol. why would you have a black guy play as a white guy when there is other great black gi joes he could of been. that would be like making a documentary about elvis and having tupac shakur play the role. it makes no sense lol

  26. Loved the movie! I actually was a big fan of both the movies, great graphics, non-stop action, why would we need acting! I did like duke though, hopefully he comes back for the 3rd movie

  27. As soon as Duke died i lost interest but stayed cause i paid $18 per ticket. I’m hoping they bring him back in 3 there better be a 3!

  28. I just saw the movie.

I knew what was coming, Duke getting killed…sort of…then, as reports were starting to state, him not having to die. Then, When he was “killed” everything else in the movie was taking a backseat to my anticipation of Duke’s return somehow. I was waiting for that the entire movie. And it never happened. I feel lied too. lol.
Those dirty rotten –* I also just read an article that the studios were showing two different ending movies?!? WTF? Does that mean I just saw the crappy one? I sure hope that “other version” has Duke alive in it, because this movie was “…not good at all dude! Whatchoo doing stewy? you know you can’t sing!”
We did not go to the 3-d version thankfully, as I would have slapped myself silly for paying the extra.
Thumbs down mostly for killing Duke. Here that studio execs? Killing Duke = Crappy movie.

    Bye.

  29. Maybe venting to the powers-that-be is just what should be done. Do they know through the “buzz” that people aren’t happy with killing off Duke. Personally I don’t think they care. They got their desired reaction. shocker Duke is dead or is he?
