  3. The Wolverine does look pretty cool but I’m reserving my excitment. I don’t get excited for Fox made comic book movies since X3. I enjoyed Wolverine Origins even though it was really bad and made me cry with that abomination deadpool rip off. First Class was a great pleasant surprise. Daredevil, Elektra, FF 1 and 2 were absolutely terrible. Sorry Fox. Hopefully in The Wolverine they will make Wolverine a good fighter. That was one of my many complaints of the X-Men films was Wolverine was just a punching back. In the comics he has the fighting skill to take on Captain America and Iron Fist. He’ll need to be skilled in this film to take on Silver Samurai and a army of ninjas. I’m pretty sure Wolverine went rage mode at least once in Origins. The scene were he friggin tackles Liev Schrieber through a window and stabs him in the chest. As far as the plot is concerned, I hate when superhero films take the heroes powers away. Spiderman 2 is an exception that was fantastic. Thor could have been done way better. But Wolverine is a character I think could benefit from losing his powers. Oh and Sunfire, introduce Sunfire.

As for GI Joe, I’m like Anthony that I don’t have much connection to the franchise. That being said I really love Snake Eyes and his dynamic to Storm Shadow. Ray Park as Snake Eyes saved Rise of Cobra for me despite that foam mouth. They should just make a Snake Eyes solo movie.

    • You might be in luck. When talking about a third film, Bonaventura said that he thought focusing even more on the ninjas in G.I. Joe might be the way to go!

I got to tell you i always didn’t care for Remakes, but after seeing Evil Dead ” Remake” i was loving it!, i think the reason i did is because the film was in the vein of the original. And as for the G.I.JOE reboot/sequel was good and entertaining for what it was, plus it leaps and bounds from the first one….

    ‘Forget It, Jake…………. It’s Chinatown’

    • I am not yet allowed to offer my thoughts on the ‘Evil Dead’ remake but we’ll be sure to touch on it when we podcast this week!

  5. Surprised nobody mentioned the small clip of the Silver Samurai from one of the trailers. I do think this Wolverine film will be better than Origins. It looks like it has a more focused plot, and the Japanese setting looks great.

I’m enjoying Bates Motel. I never seen Psycho so I’ll be seeing it soon. The only thing I don’t like about the show is the girl who’s dad was burnt alive. I feel as if the storyline with the girl who has AF is much better.

    • Didn’t we reference Silver Samurai at one point? I thought we pointed that out – but we might not have talked much about it beyond mentioning it.

    • We’re not entirely sure that’s the Silver Samurai but a version of the character is in the film :)

  6. The Wolverine trailer looks generic, oh wait, X-Men,X2,3 and W:Origins….hmmm….it’s Wolverine part 5, oh crap, saving my money.

    • I hope that we are pleasantly surprised but I am probably least interested in the Wolverine, compared to this summer’s other action movie offerings.

    • From the trailers anyway, I’d argue this movie may just be the first time we see the real Wolverine, as depicted in the books 😉

  9. I agree with everything you guys have said about G.I.Joe. It had a lot wrong with it and things I wish they had and hadn’t done. However, I still really enjoyed it.

Because I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece lesson in filmaking I wasn’t really disappointed by very much. I think this film needs to be looked at from a children’s point of view. If I was a kid, I’d probably love this film. No wonder it has done well. Kids + Easter bank holiday weekend + film with toy ninjas and soldiers = ££££££ ($$$$$$)

    • Exactly, that’s how I felt about it as well. Recommended that my dad see it today when he asked – because I know he just wants to see movie version of the toys I played with as a kid. For him, it’s nostalgia but he isn’t attached to the source material all that much either.

    • I didn’t enjoy it myself.

I was thinking back on it and how bad the action was/how poorly it was shot and I don’t even think the action scenes show the Joes actually shooting people. Like there’s no instance of them making smart tactical decisions or going above and beyond as the “best” at … well, anything :(

The more I think about it, the more I think it’s an worse than I originally though.

  10. Great podcast.

Re: GI Joe: the first time I saw Cobra Commander walking I thought, “that gait is incredibly feminine: there’s a woman under that costume!” Something was just off in those scenes. And that line to Destro, “you’re out of the band,” was incredibly cheeky and out of place. Destro was loaded and had powerful connections, and CC just walks away? I know CC is crazy, but I expect him to behave somewhat rationally.

    • Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it!

Really good point about Destro and his connections. It’s not like they couldn’t have recast Christopher Eccleston and, at the very least, not killed him off. He could have been a great villain if they approached him as a gritty terrorist type.

  11. I have to disagree on how I met your mother I think the group dynamic is still there from early seasons. I know te dynamic of the group has changed in the way that tey have other thing going on like Barney is trying to Mske it work with robin and Marshall and Lilly have their baby but I think the that special chemistry is still there and will be a big part of who the mother actually is.

As far as casting the mother I’m gonna say why not cast lyndsy fonseca as the mother. It’s not like their ever gonna be in te room with the children. Hae the daughter be the mother. But I don’t know if her commitment to Nikita would make impossible. I just think that’d be cool. She could be that likable character.

    • Oh, Lyndsy Fonseca could be good for sure. She’s probably not well-known enough to be considered stunt casting either. Not a lot actors/actresses can do two series at a time but it’d depend on how much she was being used in both.

  12. ID Forever: I was obsessed with Independence Day back in the 90s and I still regularly watch that movie. Looking forward to the sequels, although I kinda feel I saw them already (Battle Los Angeles and Skyline).

How I Met Your Mother: I can’t believe that there are really people who discuss the story arcs and character development of comedy shows. And I can’t believe that those people are you! Guys, these 30 minutes shows aren’t character dramas. They are just supposed to make you laugh for a few minutes and any kind of story is nothing but a McGuffin to get the situational comedy and the gags going. That’s all. You don’t wonder about the character motivation when someone tells you a joke, do you? 😉

G.I.Joe: I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the first movie. The action was cartoony, sure, but I really liked it. Even Marlon Wayans was bearable in that one, which usually isn’t the case. What surprises me about your review of Retaliation is that you barely spoke to Bruce Willis’ involvement in the movie and the story, other than the Brenda name thing. Was he that much of a non-entity in the movie?

p.s.. anyone else sick of those generic subtitles that so many movies have. You know what I’m talking about: Evolution, The Beginning, Awakening, Legacy, Retaliation, Reckoning, Redemption, Revenge, Retribution, Resurrection, Revelations, Origins etc. That kind of thing.

    • I would argue that with HIMYM, they do go for larger emotional story arcs – more than most series. That show takes itself pretty seriously most of the time (amidst all the goofy jokes).

And yeah, I could definitely do without this subtitle craze. Definitely gimmicky.

    • I thought we were both pretty excited about the episode? I don’t recall that being a particularly negative discussion about the episode. Both Anthony and I enjoyed it.

  14. What’s with all of these ties? haha Always the bridesmaid but never the bride!! At least I got Ben the victory last week!

    1. Evil Dead
    2. GI Joe
    3. Jurrasic Park
    4. The Croods
    5. Olympus has Fallen
    10. Admissions

    • Yay! True.

    • Everyone’s choosing similar – even this week I think there are 4 of the same and one that’s one film different!

  15. Really? How long can you go on about How I Met Your Mother?!

    • In fairness, that was 10 minutes in a 55 minute news segment. Comparatively, it wasn’t THAT long 😉

    • apparently, 9 seasons

      • Just watched this. Sounds like Goldblum.

      • Jeff Goldblum is awesome.

  16. I can’t believe that nobody mentioned the scene in GI JOE where Brenda starts removing clothing and says “if my Dad could see me now.” If I was the guy in the room listening to her…I’d bolt. That’s some serious Daddy issues.

    • Haha! True. I hadn’t really made that awkward connection of her stripping down and talking about her dad at the same time. That whole scene was pretty bizarre – definitely a stretch if they were trying to touch on the Flint/Lady Jaye romance in the cartoons/comics.

  17. I don’t watch Bates Motel but the description of the interior of the house being in a different time era reminded me of the Brady Bunch movie. Is that the feel it has (minus the campy comedy)?
Also, the mayor from The Dark Knight has a name…and it is Batmanuel.
