GI Joe 2 new characters and plot details G.I. Joe 2 Casting Calls Reveal New Characters & Plot Details

Production on director Jon Chu’s G.I. Joe 2 (tentatively titled G.I. Joe: Retaliation) is about to get underway, with big action stars like Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis having been recruited to give the sequel an edge over its moderately-received predecessor.

Casting calls sent out for the Hasbro flick reveal the names of a few brand new Joes that’ll make their debut in the G.I. Joe followup, along with some more information about the plot.

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner previously indicated that G.I. Joe: Retaliation would essentially amount to a semi-franchise reboot that wouldn’t require moviegoers to be familiar with the original film. However, according to io9, it looks like the sequel will still be “pretty strongly connected” to the first pic – even though Channing Tatum, Ray Park, and Byung-hun Lee are the only returning cast members.

New additions to the Joe team look to include Walker (the token wise-cracker), Robyn (a female weapons expert), and Brock (a tough guy from the hood). There’s also the fresh-faced Mouse (Joseph Mazzello), a character from the Sgt. Savage and Screaming Eagles series, and the lesser-known Blind Master (RZA) – a martial arts master expected to be shown  primarily via flashbacks involving a young Storm Shadow.

With regards to plot, it looks like the chamelon-like Zartan (Arnold Vosloo) will indeed be showing up again in the G.I. Joe sequel. The film also features a new villain in the form of Lecter, a high-tech gadgets expert who aids Zartan in his quest to (you guessed it) take over the world. Part of said scheme will involve some tricky geopolitical maneuvering, since there are numerous world leader and diplomat roles to be filled in the film as well.

Some longtime G.I. Joe fans will probably be disappointed to hear about these new (but still familiar) characters being added to the franchise, when there are still popular previously- established soldiers from the Joe universe that have yet to make the jump to the big screen. That’s just how it goes, sometimes…

GI Joe 2 lands official release date G.I. Joe 2 Casting Calls Reveal New Characters & Plot Details

All indications are that Chu and his G.I. Joe 2 scribers – Zombieland screenwriting duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick – are definitely taking a more grounded approach to the Joe lore. With a reduced budget, several noteworthy action movie stars as cast members, and a plan to shoot the sequel as more of a gritty and unpolished combat flick, Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation should definitely feel less over-the-top than Stephen Sommer’s Rise of Cobra. Whether or not it ends up being more (or less) entertaining as a result is the question for now.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation will arrive in U.S. theaters on June 29th, 2012.

  1. Well here is an established property and the Studio seems to not have any…any…any..long term direction for the property.
GI-Joe had such high expectations ….3yrs later a mess. Wow..what happened?!

  2. SO WHATS GONNA HAPPEND WITH COBRA IS HE EVER GONNA RISE, I ACTUALLY LIKED THE 1ST MOVIE. IT WASNT THAT BAD!

    • yeah agree with u it wasnt bad i enjoyed it dont know y so many ppl hated it

  3. I always thought George Lucas should have made the Joe film. The cartoon was always epic in proportion and futuristic, much like Star Wars.

  4. Sounds good, although if they really wanted to make it better they would just have to get rid of Channing Tatum, he was by far the worse actor in the first movie, even though he plays the best character.

  5. So still no Crimson Twins,Major Bludd,Dreadnocks,Bazooka,Leather Neck, or Junkyard?

    Nope,not interested.

  6. the problem with this franchise is all the characters minus snake-eyes
and storm shadow are all wearing batman’s black costume which everybody
has copied them (most notably xmen and avengers) so if they are going to continue to makeup characters and not give them their distinctive uniform looks so i can tell them apart, this franchise will still SUCK!

  7. Can’t believe they still won’t stay with the source material. What the hell!

Why can’ they take what was already there from the comics and the cartoon and build on it. Geeezz..You would think it is rocket science or something. The first movie wasn’t that bad. just wish they would have used the well known uniforms etc. Can’t understand hollywood and why they try to re-invent stuff, just stay with what is already there!!

    • because Hollywood thinks they are smarter than their audience and that people will pay for any movie they put out as long as it has an established name tacked onto it. Like Transformers, X-Men, Star Wars and Star Trek this series is dead to me. I am not going to keep giving movie studios money to make movies I don’t want to see in the hopes they will one day make one that is true to the source material, been waiting since 1980.

  8. Man some of you need to relax and see the results before getting you panties in a twist. Screen shots, Set photos, trailers. That kind of thing.

    • They did an assault on Cobra Headquarters in the arctic circle and left SnowJob behind. What more proof is needed to see that they have no clue what they are doing?

  9. If you want a real action movie, watch The Tournament. Extreme action, kills, and what not.

    #%@%^@ G.I. Joe.

  10. That link hooked onto the words “take over the world.”?

Would’ve been funnier if it showed 2 genetically-engineered mice at Acme Labs; one who’s a genius, while the other’s insane…are you pondering what I’m pondering, Sandy??

I think so, Brain, but why would anyone want to see Snow White and the Seven Samurai?

    • I hope I’m not the only one who knows where that joke originated from. . .

      • You’re not…Google “Pinkyisms” and get every WTF? response Pinky ever gave Brain.

  11. Channing Tatum was an incredibly lame Duke, Heavy Duty isn’t British, Baroness is RUSSIAN (and never had a thing for Duke)and above all, you are NEVER EVER EVER EVER supposed to see Storm Shadow unmasked. These are just a few of the things that ruined the first movie for me. I’d only watch the sequel for the sheer awesomness of Snake Eyes (always my favorite Joe).

    • What are you talking about? Storm Shadow had his mask off all the time in the Marvel G.I. Joe comic. Also the Baroness has been described as being of European descent they never specifically said she is Russian.

  12. the info from io9 is wrong and mostly rumors. read rhett reeses tweet.

  13. Lector? please tell me thats an alias for the commander.

  14. U should put scarlet and the baroness in this one to.the women who played they in the 1st gi Joe did one hell of a job.

  15. Whatever they do, please make sure Snakes Eye’s costume doesn’t have lips this time. Also make a better console game for this release. The last one almost made me ashamed to be a Joe fan.

  16. yeah like the mask storm shadow used.

  17. You know what I dont get… Why make all these new characters when there are about 500 g.i.joe and cobra characters. unless all these new joe’s die.

  18. gi joe 1 was better than saving ryans privates, hands down best war movie EVER!!!

  19. Honestly I really liked GI Joe 1, and the people I’ve talked to did too! This sudden change of venue is bad business, bad karma. Now that you are using major stars you really think that is going to make a difference? Perhaps your idea is good (only to you however) you have certainly gone about it the wrong way! Do you remember how much Avatar grossed? 1 billion, with only one major star.

  20. Is beachhead in the movie he is my 2nd favorite after snake eyes i know every thing since i watched the cartoon series

  21. I was hoping Tomax and Xamot would show up… guess not

  22. Great Movie To Watch
